Anyway I just thought it's kind of funny how CN/USA are these bad guys in Gate. I'd rather everyone be what they are, bad and good. If you want to write a story dealing with mature topics then write it maturely. That's really the main issue. I am aware that japan is killing themselves internationally every second with their backwards attitude/xenophobia and their continual flaw of depending on the LDP time and time again. they can do that as much as they want. It doesn't mean they will go all IJA on everyone else though. Yea I was exaggerating a bit when I said then, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't go down like IJA did or at least hope humanity isn't like that anymore. It's just the whole "every other nation is greedy evil scum while we just peace loving people coming to help out who we can and if we get bonus resources then sure why not". I even hear this is toned down from the original web novel so I can't even imagine how pro Japan that must have been. It's my main issue with the show/story as everything else so far has been pretty cool and interesting. My general rule of thumb is politics done well is interesting but politics down badly completely destroys any good in a story. I here there is more sexual violence and dominance later on. Based on how the politics are being handled I kind of have my doubts about that being handled maturely. I think I've only read 2(maybe 3?) Fantasy authors actually dealing with the aftermath of sexual violence. Sometimes that's obviously fine to not deal with it but a lot of the time I feel they merely use it as a tool for quick sympathy and move on with the characters which sits poorly. everyone does that though. In Hollywood stuff in 99% of the cases it's the US who save the world from aliens or who are fighting off the evil russians/germans (germans not so much anymore) and whatnot. Yes exceptions exist but they're rare. I wouldn't argue that THAT is something strange. No one ever wants to be considered history's villain. Thats why American movies don't general depict America as the bad guys, and why Japanese stuff doesn't show the Japanese as the bad guys. It just becomes a question of how honest that depiction is. Like in the context of this conversation, the idea that Japan wasn't villainous in WW2 is just contradicting history. While anime and tokusatsu in general are full of YAMATO DAMASHIII, I always find it more interesting when they go the opposite way, or at least get call out that shit in the work. For example, one of the more interesting Godzilla films didn't have Godzilla as a nuclear allegory, but rather the physical embodiment of the people who suffered at the hands of the Japanese in WW2, here to punish the unapologetic Japanese. Or how in MLA, the IJA's NIPPON BANZAI ways starts a shitfest, and eventually an American officer goes on a rant, calling them infantile, followed by the MC going "...Hes absolutely right!" well yeah, the ww2 stuff is just stupid and I wasn't trying to argue that. Was just about GATE unless you're of the opinion that their stance on GATE is ww2 related.

Oh, I didn't realize you were just referring to Gate. Honestly I don't even think the wankery in GATE thus far is all that bad, especially compared to other stuff thats out there. Maybe further down the line things will be different.

It gets pretty bad alright

I thought it might be later on
So far it's manageable though. Heck, while the levels of magic jesus were way overkill I didn't even mind it tbh. Was more funny than anything else that it's always the evil chinese that try to murder cute little innocent babies while all the japanese highschool kids just shit on the chinese "pros".
|
Only american special forces could have a black guy in it!
GATE is funny, sometimes. Though I guess it's equally offensive.

You guys should check out the portrayal of the USA and Obama in the manga Gamble Fish. Pretty hilarious (and there are some critics too)

Yea but the evil japanese invaded and wiped out part of china too. Ive read like most of the volumes and i dont see how japan is good in mahouka. They are about as bad as everyone else.

Maybe not even good... you know about maya and how they got their kids that strong... just superior which is even worse given the conversation we're having right now lol

Every country does this with their media. This shouldn't be a surprise at all lol.

Gangsta seems super good so far. Think it's kinda slow explaining the whole "Twilights" thing but I feel like it will be worth it in the end. Reminds me of Kekkai Sensen a lot and I love that, especially since it's on hiatus/break or w/e for awhile.

Not sure why you guys are even discussing this stuff. In general, a country's media will portray it in the best light so shows like Mahouka and Gate portraying Japan as a peace-loving nation etc... aren't exactly outliers. Either way, I don't personally mind watching it. So long as the story continues world exploring and stays entertaining, I'll keep watching

I'm forgetting a lot of films from the era. One of the things to keep in mind with talking about older anime, is the only old anime anyone ever actually watches now days are the classics. There was probably plenty of absolute garbage back then. But no one is gonna watch 30-year-old shitty anime from the 80s now days, much less sub it. So whats left are the gems of the era. Its like history is being our own personal quality checker. edit: man, Mysterious Cities of Gold was probably the first thing I remember watching on TV, ever. That used to be my main shit back when I was like 4 years old. hmm fair enough. Quite the list there. Also, yes! I loved Mysterious Cities of Gold as well!

Yea Japan in Mahouka isn't portrayed as good, at least not in the vols I read up to. Everyone not in the current generation is basically portrayed as scared greedy fucks who will manipulate the kids no matter what. I guess the incident with Maya may "sway" CN to being worse but then you have what JP did to themselves and what they did to that country so it's not like either side is good. It makes sense too that no one is good as it's all about Magical Jesus protecting his sister/wife against the evil World.

A lot of wank doesn't care about good light though, it's more about being part of "big 7", "big 8", then have their high schoolers shit on everyone.

The person you're talking about was defeated by 1) a closed combat specialist of near equal level who had the aid of his girlfriend who delayed his assassination of a target. note that the man wasn't a high schooler 2) Jesus 3) Mayumi, a long ranged specialist, who was given cover and time to prepare her attack and is far stronger than most adults in japan. He trashed all the other high schoolers.
The only reason they aren't adults is cause of meta reasons anyways *shrugs*

I think JWWW is settling in pretty nicely once you get used to the pretty drastic shift in art style. Lot of fun stuff coming and I hope they pull it off well.
Plus the OP has really grown on me. + Show Spoiler +

Magical Jesus doesn't actually lose to anyone. He just chooses not to win.

JWWW OP is a freaking earworm...
Gakkou Gurashi! ep 4 was a bit slow. I hope the show will pick up on its pace again. Kurumi best girl though, lol.

Gakkou Gurashi! + Show Spoiler + I agree this episode was a bit slow. I guess they want to introduce how all the characters got into the living school club at the beginning of the series. I wonder if they are going to continue on this episode showing more of Miki. It's pretty easy to infer what ends up happening, but it did feel like the episode didn't wrap up the arc well. The school living club is also crazy to let Yuki have so much control over them. I guess it's good that they already have experience outside the school grounds; with supplies eventually running out they will have to do recon at some point. I hope they get to some of the future stuff soon, too many flashbacks gets tiresome!
