Why it was asked was because there are many people like my self who just started reading the book#1 after they started watching Game of Thrones. We can't go to any other thread with out getting the whole book series spoiled for us. Now the spoilers in this thread were getting crazy, and I agree with the mods stances about just flat out saying NO to everything. It was the easiest foolproof why to go. Now after the airing of tonight's show, Book#1-Game of Thrones (watching or reading it) becomes the bare minimum-non spoiler topic. And as this seems like it may go on for a few seasons, I think this would be that best format. No book or other types of possible spoils till the end, then book#2 because the new "line in the sand" as we could call it.

Started reading the book but have stayed behind the TV shows and it is well worth it. Ordered the next 3 as well so I don't have to wait for season 2 ^^ I wonder how much "The Black" means to all the people that went there because they had no other choice. I think after the season is done maybe allow discussion of book 1 in this thread as well? Personally, I recommend going back in time and reading the books when they came out, instead of jumping on a giant bandwagon ;-p As far as taking the black, It really depends. Given that the majority of recruits are low-born criminals without many prospects. I think most tend to learn to like it, to some degree. Excluding the inability to see their families and take wives (though they all tend to visit a brothel near the wall...) their lot in life tends to stay the same, or improve. The nobles are a different story and they tend to vary greatly.

Not being able to discuss aspects of the book which the TV show has already shown is silly. And, lets be honest. Game of Thrones was published in 1996. I realize, sadly, not everyone has read the books before the TV show came out, so it's reasonable not to make blatant spoilers. However, not being able to discuss a 15 year old book, that has been adapted for television, after the television show has already shown that part of the storyline seems... silly. Isn't there a statue of limitations on spoilers? P.S. Frodo destroys the ring.
