There isn't really a point other than to guarantee GRRM can write fluff for 3 more novels and still not run out of shit to write a bout. If the story was crafted more cogently then it could have been done by now. Instead we go down every single rabbit trail the SoI&F world could contain, and so here we are waiting over half a decade for the next novel to come out. And I don't blame GRRM, If I wrote myself into a tangled holocaust of plot lines like he did, I'd avoid the keyboard like the plague too.

Try reading Steven Eriksons "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series, it's a 10book series and he's released a book a year for just about 10yrs. I've read Asoiaf as well, epic read and what of my favorites, but it barely holds a candle to a spotlight when comparing them.
On topic: Sean Bean is the perfect Eddard Stark, I can't believe they made this a series.. I hope they do it justice.

I was afraid that this might be where the series was going.

I don't see why there has to be one protagonist, and I think Martin did that purposefully. I think there are characters who are certainly more important than others, though.
The series is more a study in character than a typical epic fantasy story. I think following the story of less important characters makes the world feel more real than if Martin just took the tunnel vision approach which I guess some people prefer.

After that it gets drawn out and really boring (The Storm of Swords was a big letdown for me and I ceased reading it afterwards). What? Outrageous. Storm of Swords is widely regarded as the best in the series while Feast for Crows is the absolute worst. The book where the plot moved the most in interesting and unexpected directions and there were plot twists in almost every chapter was a big letdown for you?

What exactly is this "fluff" you speak of? I think the story is crafted rather well and having the perspective of multiple characters (even during the same events) allows you to really see every major plot event from multiple angles.
As for Bran, + Show Spoiler +It seems pretty clear he's set on meeting two characters that will reveal much of the important backstory we haven't gotten yet, + Show Spoiler + and + Show Spoiler +Howland Reed + Show Spoiler + who should reveal what happened at the Tower of Joy .

Awesome. I seriously cannot wait for this to start up. The wait is as brutal as waiting for A Dance with Dragons.

Yeh this is one of the first things i thought also, but maybe with some camera trickery, they'll seem alot more imposing.

The side characters are awesome for world building. And I'm pretty sure it's gonna get awesome when Bran realizes his full potential.

GENTLEMEN, I hate to piss people off again by bumping this thread but big news!
"it looks like HBO will be airing a 15-min Inside Game of Thrones special on Dec. 5th at 8:45 PM Eastern. HBO describes the program as “A special sneak preview of the highly anticipated HBO series Game of Thrones.” "
Straight from http://winter-is-coming.net/
Maybe this wasn't worth bumping the thread, who knows. But it is to me :D
Edit -> Didn't see it was bumped yesterday by someone else! so I am not the bad guy here.

oh god peter dinklage tyrion
I'm dying
this show is going to be pure greatness even if it's bad
The actress for Sansa looks a little old btw. Isn't she like, 12? The actress for Daenerys looks a lot closer to her age. And in the top left second photo down, is that Arya standing next to Eddard?

yeah its arya in that photo. they aged all the characters up, which makes sense because nobody wants to see these horrible things done to a 12yo or whatever, it makes sense since this show is going to be relatively mainstream and the US is quite squeamish about underage stuff
i'd say sansa looks about 16ish in that pic, which is fine because i didn't really picture her as a 13yo or whatever when reading the books, as 12-13 in martin's universe (medieval times sort of) is essentially 17-18 now.

Okay, in the bottom 4 photos, in the second one from the left, that's Tyrion at the left, and from the moon-and-falcon shields I'm guessing this is the scene where Catelyn brings Tyrion to Lysa.
So, is that Catelyn next to Tyrion and Bronn behind them?

I really can't wait to see this. I'd say all the casting choices (especially Eddard) looks really solid.
At the same time it just reminds me that the next book still hasn't come out...
