I have heard so much good about these books and I have waited so long for someone to make a fantasy series that actually takes the genre seriously. If this series is anything like BSG in a fantasy setting I would be extremely happy. I actually expect it to be even better though since it's supposedly based on a better story. Read it up to (including) The Clash of Kings. After that it gets drawn out and really boring (The Storm of Swords was a big letdown for me and I ceased reading it afterwards).

If you have the time you should definitely read it before.

Certain chapter arcs (the Dorne ones specifically) are quite good, but others are just pointless without knowing what happens in Dance.

Different Author huh? I didn't get that. I actually enjoyed it, but it's hard to compare to the other books because it doesn't have the Daenerys or Jon storylines which are what I look forward to the most. It deals with the more "trivial" sub-plot of the Lannisters and all that, but I still enjoyed the Tyrion chapters and even the Jaime ones.

The Wheel of time series, can at times be alittle drawn out. After Robert Jordans death, Brandon Sanderson have taken over the series and written the 12th a 13th book in the series, the13th "Towers of Midnight" have just come out. A few people have been told me, that the last two books is absolutely spectacular and definately the best in the series.

I started reading the series last weekend and am now most of the way through Clash of Kings. I like the books, but holy crap does it take forever for there to be any kind meaningful resolution to anything. In fact, I still don't really know who the main protagonist is + Show Spoiler + My guess is Jon Snow What exactly is the point of Bran? Why is Catelyn a central character as opposed to Robb?
