No, re-read the chapter. The dragon was holding back against the whole guild. When Makarov stopped him Gildarts hadn't said anything about how much power it was using. This also makes sense as when Acno was fighting the guild, he didn't really do anything, mostly just stood there and shrugged off attacks. Against Makarov it was actually pushing him back and about to kill him.
Maybe it was still holding back its power, but it's important to remember that:
1) it may have been holding back its power when it fought Gildarts.
2) Makarov was seriously injured from his fight with Hades and the God Slayer.

Wow, that was a pretty cheesy chapter. I guess Mashima just wanted to move on to the part with Eclipse. Hopefully that will be more drawn out, as it seemed like by the end of Day 5 the fights were being rushed through.

Couldnt gray and juvia have just surrendered after beating leon and chelia? They were touched last by blue pegasus so the pts would go to blur pegasus and sting could get max 7 pts. Unless its a last man standing thing which means ft should have just turtled and hit a 5 player timing and wipe out all stragglers (assuming there will be 1-2 leaders left) for ez pts. Also, cant believe no one pull the ks'ing move other than that one chick from sabertooth.. Ez pts for a double kill.

It would be have been a point of pride. Gray would have never surrendered to Lyon like that, and we know that Gray would not have done the most rational thing either (remember Mavis wanted Laxus to fight Rufus since she felt that he had the best chance to win, but Gray wanted to fight Rufus regardless simply because he had a grudge).

It's the same reason that Erza fought 100 demons instead of 51. There's no meaning to being 1st if you can't take pride in it.

Nice. Yeah, they really rushed through the end of the Grand Magic Games. It's like Mashima got bored of the tournament and just wanted to show us some dragons.
