The other kinda funny to read one was the person in 2005 arguing wireless mesh networks were the next big thing in consumer electronics, but they were making a prediction in a pretty sane way (they saw it peaking and thought it was the beginning of a trend). | ||

I’ve read so many think pieces about the “internet of things” that reported that would be our future, but with no understanding of the overhead that would be created by maintaining that network. We can barely keep the current internet from harming people in real life, but they want to hook it up to my heating system in my house. The most successful people in the tech industry seemed to be struck with this almost criminal naiveté, not understanding or caring the how hard bad actors will work to undermine the protections they put in place. Or the threat that as these systems grow in complexity, more and more of the general population will not understand them. Which was fine when it was the home computer, but less so when it is the locks to my house or my water boiler. I recently told about a show called “Hidden Killers of Victorian Homes”, which featured all the stupid shit people did in the early era of electricity and plumbing. How they were doing wildly unsafe stuff, but anyone who raised that concern was getting in the way of PROGRESS. And then houses burned down and people died using basic plumbing. It was very amusing, but also made me think of the internet. 100 years from now people are going to laugh “And then the companies sold everyone tracking devices and they bought them because they streamed cat videos, hahahahahahaha" | ||

On a side note: I finished the Spider-man DLC and that is some of the best written action video game stuff out there right now. It and the main game take a real step forward in making believable characters with nuance and history. It takes 30 seconds of Blackcat being on screen for them to establish that her and Peter were a romantic, intimate couple, that they are on equal footing and imply Peter ended the relationship. The whole time being funny and not at all heavy handed. Its real good stuff. | ||

Great view from the Berwick Law which we've oftentimes seen in the distance from our local hill in Edinburgh. The sea was silent at first but with the tide coming back it roared and made a fantastic salty spray. Walked about 8 miles or so I'd say and weather's been fine throughout. Varying degrees of sunshine and highly variable light conditions gave many an opportunity for the smartphones to be drawn and a picture to be snapped. 5/5 would recommend spending a nice day in the outdoors there. Restauration was pleasing as well with decent coffee and a nice dark chocolate - Guinness cake. Scotland is so, so beautiful. | ||
