On average the RTX 2080 is only 1% faster than a 1080Ti ... benchmark on 35 titles

I think you underestimate Nvidias marketing team. They'll just keep sending developers to game studios to make sure every AAA release has their new technology. Just like they did with Physx in the past.
you buy an early adopter black box. I currently don't have a graphics card and will probably not pick up a 1080TI but rather the equally powerful 2080 at some point in spring next year. Unless i get a deal for a basically factory new 1080TI below or around 500€.
I really want to play AC:Odyssey with RTX raytracing though.
and tbh these current benchmarks are mostly bullshit because they compare a whopping 1080TI FE with the 2080TI/non-TI FE. Apples and Pears.

Picking up a RTX 2080 at this time is a gamble, paying 200 euro (or even more if you go with a used 1080Ti) premium on features that might or might not work, isn't a very good idea.
RT is a cool technology, no one is denying that, but I think it will take a lot more tensor cores to run games at good FPS. DLSS on the other hand might be the real game changer, it has great potential, so Im more excited for that rather than for RT, at least in the near future. RT will probably be more attractive in 3-4 years.

Yet PhysiX is still kinda crap to this day and not a technology that drives sales of Nvidia GPU's. Same as HairWorks and other proprietary Nvidia technologies, they are largely irrelevant.
Besides, the upcoming PS5 will have AMD Navi GPUs in it, Xbox has an AMD GPU in it and the console market is roughly 50% of the gaming market, so I seriously doubt studios will develop games with RTX if 50% of their market (or 100% in the case of console exclusives) cant use it. Sure we might get some PC exclusives, but to think that this technology will catch on and become the norm, at least in the next 5 years is rather silly.
DLSS might be a game changer, but it depends on a lot of things to be widely used.
No publication I read had a custom gtx 1080 TI overclocked to compare to the overclocked 2080ti. That's why the benchmarks are iffy.
I don't want a thoroughly used graphics card at the moment. That's why the premium of 200 or so bucks for a newer card would be OK for me. If I find a cheap used 1080ti though... Or a bargain new one... That's another story. But comparing factory new I'd be willing to spend 750 ish on a good rtx 2080. Though the little of what I've heard about custom 2080s is not overwhelming yet.
The difference between different 1080Ti's is very small. The premium you're paying with custom cards is usually in the design, noise and thermals. Check out any video of 1080Ti comparisons and you will see +/- 5% difference at best. That's nothing, so the current benchmarks, especially the one from Hardware Unboxed is valid because they did a complete benchmark of stock speed and OC speeds. There's nothing iffy about current benchmarks.

You say that but they priced the 2080 at more dollars-per-performance than the 1080ti and down, so there's literally no reason for them to reduce prices on 1080ti and below.
