This was code that was passed to me. It is a solar lint thing, was mostly curious to see how bad it was. Recommendation is 15, but most of the ones in it are like 40-50 with this one massive outlier. Tried to refactor it a bit and am rapidly understanding why it got so ridiculous (it is querying something on a webserver then writing certain facts about it to an excel file every time something meets a certain criteria. Since it is the same excel file, it has to be kept open and accessed from the same method as far as I know how to do).

Looks like plenty of the methods she wrote for other files are 100+, checking them now. Right now they work, and I'm a bit afraid to change them...

why are unpaid internships a thing? why are they not against the law?

(saying this because i'm looking for a new job and one of the companies called me and "offered me" an unpaid intership for 3 fucking months, i said "NO")

They are against the law in some places. Even if it isn’t I would never accept anything unpaid.

even if i'm not working, i would say no to them, they are just shitty and even makes the market worse, companies rely on free work

Tell me about it. I was job hunting a while ago and someone offered me an unpaid internship to get “experience in the legal field”. I told them I already had a paying job and they still tried to pitch it to me like it was a good career move. I had to tell the silly woman on the phone that she should find a recent college graduate to take advantage of.

In how many/few places is an unpaid internship actually worth it for "experience?" Almost none of them if I had to guess? I haven't been job-hunting because I have no clue how long my Master's will take.

The problem with unpaid internships from my perspective isn't that they are inherently unfair (since a company usually doesn't really get a ton of net gains from the first few months of employment considering they have to train and set up employees, obviously significantly varying on a case by case basis, and employees can benefit significantly from those months of learning) but rather that companies willing to use them are the same companies that you can be sure will abuse them. Imagine a 3 month unpaid internship in construction work lol. "Here build 3 houses then we'll think about paying you" ???

It is just a way for them to get free, short term labor for low grade tasks without any risk. I can see an unpaid internship for like a week, just to experience being in an office and maybe going to court(for a law firm). But that is it. Or for government work where you are learning about the ins and outs of government.

But every firm that offers unpaid internships for law students also, to nobody’s surprise, have terrible attorney to support staff relationships as well. Like endless hostile work environment claims.
