SAT2s are different from SAT1s
2s are the subject tests and 1s are the standardized regular tests (math reading writing)
acritter and i have the same overall scores high five

tbh tho sats dont mean shit lmao

Just like the BAR doesn't mean shit about practicing law, law school doesn't mean shit to passing the bar and the LSATs don't mean shit to passing law school. They are all just gate keepers to limit the pool of people going into a field to those that are truly interested.

i studied for 0 tests in 11th grade that shit was trivial

tests were my jam actually, those happened in class so i didn't have to do shit outside of class for them. assignments were much worse.

Same here, but teaching made me learn that many, many, many children are not like me. Also I wished I had studied, because that is a skill I could have not learned in college and done a lot better.

this, exactly. im sure that most of us were pretty much the same way bc we are all smart so we could get away without studying since we naturally had the aptitude. I got a 5 on my AP calc exam without studying bc I was smart. but I totally wish I struggled with it and learned how to study bc college was a rude awakening.

so, when you're teaching, especially when you first start, you see the polar opposite of the student you were.

while both of you didn't study even my regular classes you see the difference in intelligence despite many students studying the same way..by just breezing through their notes without actually practicing (for the record, I am a math teacher..PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!!!).. and when you teach the lower level classes you are in for suuuuuch a shocker. I have kids earning 20s. and that's out of 100.

but that's also due to the common core which is a whole different thread

And this is basically why students should be funneled off into different aptitude levels from a MUCH earlier age

and I don't mean like "smart kids here dumb kids here" but like honors math and superhonors math and honors whateverthefuck else and superhonors whateverthefuck else

just make sure everyone's getting challenged but not overwhelmed at every stage of their education

that'd be cool right

dealing with individual needs is a lot harder than just assuming everybody is the same though

that'd probably take more education spending and some education reform, which is apparently not very high on most politicians' priority lists

The thing is we are getting more and more capable of DOING this kind of thing, especially in big cities where it's reasonable to (say) send kids to entirely different buildings on different days

at a certain point it's got to be unconscionable to do anything else

yep, plus you want heterogeneous classrooms. you want a couple smart kids to help the less smart kids, that sort of thing.

but obv if you're super smart, you belong in an honors class or you'll get bored.

TBH I don't think smart kids should be taught alongside the rest

they should have tutoring hours (which isn't just whoring out the smart kids; learning to teach can really help you understand a subject)

best of both worlds

problem is there's no middle ground between between being extremely smart 160 iq mensa prodigy and just a bright child in honors class
the genius kid is going to skip a bunch of grades, enter a uni at 14, and probably end up doing research with a professor for the rest of their adolescence
whereas your smart but not smart enough to be a genius kid is just languishing in classes that only semi-challenge them

All solutions have problems. As a teacher you want to help every student, not just the smart ones. Also its a lot harder to find the smart kids that you think. The ability to pass classes without effort is only one type of smart.

That's exactly why I think we need to start the whole branching out thing earlier

and have specialized classes that take kids from multiple schools

that way we can address even more learning levels

Then you end up with a splintered education system, possible discrimination and possible missing of core socialization and the issue that some parents are going to be super grumpy where their kids end up.

Plus all of this needs to be judged by people, so kids will end up in the wrong school/classes.

You can use that as an argument against any kind of class separation at all, do you really think that we shouldn't have any honor classes?

If not then the only question is how much specialization we want. I say more, and think we should start adding on a few bits and pieces and see how things go.

you can just ignore high school and play video games in class instead
When in doubt, just believe in yourself and press buttons
