How often do you not start with branches? Most situations I can think of where I wouldn't start with branches involve pooled gold. Honestly about 50% of my support games and 20% of my offlane games I don't get branches.

Imagine how awesome if we had 6.69 patch was reverted... omg
AoE for gaining charges reduced from 1600 to 1200 No longer give you charges if a spell was cast from the fog of war

In pub game i(support) often just save 150-200 gold in case i need sentry/TP/smoke early. I often decided after scouting out the initial enemy line up and how they lane. But 1-2 branches for some heroes really matters a lot: Veng for example, she could stun twice instead of once at level 1 which is a first blood matter.

a lot of pros on stream sell bottle before wand/stick to free up slots. Is three stats/instant heal better than keeping bottle?
|
As support, I never start with branches (barring some random gold situations). Standard build is Obs/Courier (or Sent/Smoke) and then Tango Salve Clarity. That chews up all your money. Though after that I'll often get tangos.
I just sell the starting branches I get on core heroes. The gold is better spent going towards, say, Drum. Getting it 300g faster is a big deal. Same with something like Phase or Midas or hell even Radiance. The list just goes on. By the time you've gotten all your time-critical items, your stick is already not long for this world. Wand is best as a panic buy item to use up unreliable gold, in my opinion.
And, @ above, yes. Instant>duration that can be canceled. In fights anywhere past that early stage, you're not going to have much of a chance to bottle between getting hit. Bottle may technically be more healing, but realistically, you're not going to get anywhere near its full potential. Plus, 15 charge wand is going to give you more mana than a full bottle, so there's that.

i buy a wand on enigma, and that is about it stick is good for most people

I used to get wand all the time but I don't think its worth it on cores because you hit 6 slots like 15-20 minutes into the game. It also slows down your core items by an unnecessary 1 minute
Supports have the slots but you generally start with like 1 branch as support and slowing your blink/arcane/force whatever isn't worth it at all

i buy wand if i'm gonna fight in the mid game, skip it if going for late

Nothing is worse than seeing a support start with branches and rush a magic wand. That shit seriously makes me tilt.

the best way to play dota right now is just to go full retard

If you have to go out of your way to buy all 3 Branches for the Wand, it's not really worth it. If you still have the Branches lying around in lane, 150 gold to roll +3 all Stats into a slot that you're already carrying anyway is much more worth it, since otherwise you're wasting the Branches you already paid for. How often do you not start with branches? Most situations I can think of where I wouldn't start with branches involve pooled gold. I should have defined as i seldom buy 3 or more gg branch starts unless im mid bottle rushing doing the 3branch+tango build. I usually run like 1 or 2 branches, meaning i need to buy more branches to finish up the wand most of the time.
Even when im mid doing the 3branch+tango bottle rush, there's no reason for me to finish up a wand as it comes down to what i've said, what are the chances that 1, you store over the limit of 10charges, or 2, that 5extra charge will save you. It's extremely unlikely in all scenario. Like i've said, if you managed to store more than 10charges, you probably aren't using that wand correctly in the first place anyway.
As for when do i not start with branches, pretty much all support games. Unless that hero has a mana requirement where the branch will tip it over for another spell but those heroes are few. I would have spent all my starting money on courier/ward/tango/salve/clarity. I rather grab 1 clarity than 1 branch most of the time.
On my offlane games, i will bulk up on stout shield + regen + 1 or 2 branches depending, as melee(gold limit). Which means i wont spend that 53/106+recipe gold to finish up the wand. Offlane im poor anyway. As offlane range hero, I will still stock up on regen without the stout shield. Max of 2 branches too as I will attempt a quick boots rush or save the money to buy more regen as necessary as I know I wont be guaranteed farm.Saving the money gives flexibility of choice as to what do i want to do later.
On safelane carries, there's no reason whatsoever to grab a wand in the first place. Even if i start off with 3branches or more, i will still focus on getting that first big item asap over grabbing a wand.
All in all, it comes down to the fact that I think that extra 5charges and +3 stats isn't worth the money. That recipe + whatever branches i need to topup inorder to buy the wand, i would rather get something else that is of similar value, say a obs/smoke/tele scroll/regen.

Watching the lo3 vod.
Did slasher seriously ask Hao the same question 3 times in a row?

There are plenty of support heroes who benefit from starting with a specific amount of branches (WK 3, VS 2 ect) so they can get off two spells at L1.

Since calendar events are already linked to LR's there should be an icon or something that says if you're subscribed to an LR so you can see what events you actually care about.

From my experience unless you are playing 'serious' game in tournament (or whatever cm games), it doesn't matter much about the starting items on support, because you will often pool mid 2tangos or buy ward+cour anyway and then you are to 'free' to get whatever you want, it is a goddamn pub.
I mean on some heroes like VS yes 2 branches make quite some differences on her mana pool but if you dont get it then it is no big deal, because just like most supportive heroes during the first 5-10mins of the game, you prepare to go back base after an early risky kill (/attempt) or just suicide to neutral when you are low mana/hp (after you spent your gold obviously). That way you let whoever on the lane get more exp and then you go gank other lane or go straight to check/guard the rune to help mid etc.
I have only done Magic wand rush on rubbick...and maybe orge magi (for orge i got boots first ofc rofl)

Pretty much yes. I was watching it live and he got a ton of well, hate for his questions. I had a lot of issues with his questions since he kept using anecdotes and long-winded questions which is very bad when you have a translator. Slasher usually gets flack just because he is well, Slasher. But this is one of the times I would say he deserved it which is why even DjWheat talked about it afterwards.
When using a translator, gotta use simple, concise questions.

i once pooled all tangos to mid rofl
