There is way way way too much information that needs to memorized for anything specific to be really helpful.
Its not like SC, in dota you have to memorize over a hundred heroes each with a variety of spells (average of 4 but some more and some less). not to mention items, stats, and totally baffling and contrary spell interactions.

The best way to learn is probably to read basic guides like purges "welcome to dota you suck" and then just jump in to playing. experience is really the only good teacher in dota imo. (at least until you have the basics down, which will take you like 6 months to a year.)

I've heard terms like Carry, Farm, etcetera. What do those mean, then?

Farming is acquiring gold for your items.

A carry is a typically a hero which the team gives the highest priority for farming, so they will avoid taking creep kills if the carry is around so that he can get the gold. The reason they do this is because the carry is a hero who scales better than the other heroes with items, so gold is more valuable on him. These heroes are typically agility based heroes that lane in the "safelane" (Bottom for radiant and top for dire).

carries are also often incredibly useless without farm meanwhile non-carries can always deal good chunk of damage with their spells

best way to learn dota is to play it

Basically, in a nutshell, support heroes need neither a level advantage or gold advantage to have an impact. Semi carry heroes need a level advantage, but have a higher impact. Carry heroes have the highest impact but need both levels and money. So a draft with five support heroes is a bit like a six pool and a draft with five carries is like three nexus before gate.

Thanks guys! I just watched Free To Play, kinda inspirational, but I'm not convinced about Dota yet. Will watch the 2 Purge vids and read that blog in the train later today and spend next week wasting my time on my computer !!

What would you point out as three to five major skills an average 3k solo player is lacking and needs to get a hang of/master in order to have an easier time winning in the long run?

Map awareness, Positioning, Decision making in regards to being where on the map and when.

Being average in these will get you to 4k.

Nr 1 priority would be learning how to kill heroes. So many unpunished mistakes at 3k rating cause the players don't see the opportunity in getting kills. Other than that:

Then mana efficiency and map movement

Also, when you are new, be fearless when you are trying out new heroes. There are only 2-3 heroes that are crazy hard to pick up when you are new. Use the guide the folks at TL put together(see massive thread called standard guides). No hero is impossible to get the basics from and playing them will only help you.

Also, don't ignore your right clock, even as a support. Maybe people get super focused on the abilitie, but your auto attack is your bread and butter. Never forget that.
