People in Dota have expectations and when they aren't met this happens. It gets further amplified by community sites like reddit where it's become a meme to complain to Valve. I guess people still do it because it actually works.
I like how Valve released a patch with hats in the middle of it all though. What a troll move.

Releasing the 73 MB hats patch was hilarious, but to be honest, Valve's communication with the community really isn't that great.

If it wasnt called Diablo in no way it would have received a terrible grade. It maybe even would be well received. People are just absurdly bitter about it because it didnt meet insanely high expectatives.
Diablo 3 for the Xbox receive a 6.8. Much better game, definatelly.

Games are judged in relation to their predecessors. So are movies. So are phones. So are everything in this world.
The expectations for D3 weren't absurdly high. D3 was legitimately bad. The story was written by a 12 year old. It's a loot game completely compromised with an in-game monetization system. It wasn't tested at all at higher levels of play. A lot of promised features weren't in the game at the time. It's an action RPG with no sense of ownership of a character because you can reroll at will.
Etc... It was a high fidelity bad game.

Might want to lay off the assumptions there mate. This is sad though, the post have now dropped to the level of B.net forums. It helps to realize that it is not either X or Y but a multitude of potential reasons. The moment one begins saying, it is X and if you say otherwise, you are dishonest, all reason has gone out the window.
People played diretide for the sake of diretide. People played diretide for the sake of items. People played diretide for the event and items.

Yes, products are often evaluated in the way you describe. But rating games in such a way on a site like metacritic ruins the concept, since games are supposed evaluated on a "general" basis so they can be compared. Call it a mediocre game, 3.8 still seems too low, almost based on it's fidelity alone.
