IRC chatter should remain in IRC - http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=tl.dota2

Posts that relate to topics with their own thread, such as in News, Tournaments or Strategy should go in those threads.

Remember when Yango told us about that bug with ods aura that let it trigger off of basi toggle?
That was pretty fun/broken while it lasted.

iirc the dev.dota thread he made was closed because devs didnt want people to know about it lol

Soon after treads had their cooldown on switching attributes removed in dota1 it turned out tread switching triggered od aura. Now that was broken

Just curious, are there heroes that you guys would say are good for if you want to win games regardless of how bad of teammates you might have? I have the most fun playing 1st position, but in pubs that seems basically like gambling because you're relying on teammates to not throw the game early or screw over your lane. Jungling heroes seem like a way to avoid getting screwed by a shitty lane, but at the same time you can easily screw your team over by jungling because of stupid picks, and get screwed over in jungle because of weak lanes. Would you have to go for a mid capable hero thats capable of carrying, like tiny?

iv heard that playing a thousand games of lone druid in pubs not only gives you good winrate but also makes you super famous.

I would say either him or prophet if you just want to not have to give a shit about your teammates.

Yeah that's usually your best bet, but junglers can work as well. I've played enough Dota 2 for the game to properly match me with players of similar capability, but whenever i play the original DotA, everyone's usually a lot worse than me. In those game it's pretty easy to snowball with a hero like Shadow Fiend. Treads/Bottle/Shadow Blade, roam around the map killing people. Other heroes that can go solomid and pubs don't know how to deal with would be Ursa, Drow Ranger, Templar Assassin, basically heroes that do retarded amounts of damage. Just get Shadow Blade, invisibility = invincibility. For heroes that can jungle, Lifestealer, Doom or Skeleton King work wonders. Skeleton King's just hilarious because if you snowball hard enough you'll pretty much be impossible to kill.

And if i really want a guaranteed win i just pick Furion (Nature's Prophet). That hero allows you to win the game singlehandedly, because he punishes three kinds of typical low-skill pub behaviour very hard: 5 man mid face-off (TP to a sidelane and take a tower), farming alone in a lane (TP on top of them and kill them with your superior items), and not defending pushed in lanes (TP in to push them even further and take a rax, they're probably not even carrying TP scrolls).

The problem with jungling in pubs is that while you don't have a lane to lose, you pretty much have to expect that you need to win the other lanes for your teammates. So if you're going into the jungle with the mindset of "I'll farm for 20 minutes then win the game", it's the wrong one. There will be games where your teammates manage to not feed and you come out and carry, but more often than not, leaving your pub teammates alone is a recipe for disaster.

It's sort of the same with mid, but if you win mid, you're also keeping down the opposing mid hero from developing, whereas you don't have that suppressive ability from the jungle. If you leave your teammates alone, they will very often lose, and if you gank, you have to hope the advantage you give them isn't for nothing.

Really bad patch for solo carrying. I don't think mid role has been this unimportant for YEARS. The strong mid heroes just aren't nearly as strong as they used to be. I used TA to snatch 50 wins in 65 games or so before she was nerfed (although after the bugfixes IIRC) and I played a shit ton of invoker before he was nerfed. Those were heroes you could fucking control the map with regardless of what the hell the opponent threw at you mid. These days the strongest picks aren't capable of anything by themselves, perhaps bar lone druid who can handle many lanes and stay dominant if he does well.

There are plenty of good mid heroes for pubs. You just have to recognize that there's very little overlap between "good pub mid hero" and "good competitive mid hero", especially since many of the good competitive mid heroes are gankers with very suspect lategame development. But you're not required to play those kinds of heroes in pubs. Indeed, there are many mid heroes that are suited to the selfish, mistake-filled environment of pub games.

TA is still a very powerful mid hero if you are strong with her.

God I miss invoker so much. I play him from time to time but unless my opponent is really bad it's really hard to get creeps with him, at least the very few minutes. And going QW without blades of attack? You're asking to get no creeps ever.
I don't even go QW anymore, and it's a lot more fun.

The ease of access of watching competitive games has basically gotten many people into this mindset of trying to pick and play pub games the way they see competitive games being played. This is especially true of players coming off of Starcraft backgrounds, because "copying progamers" is far more successful there. But in DotA, regardless of what level you're at, pub DotA is still pub DotA. It's a game dictated by completely different rules because of how you're playing with no communication with 4 players you've never met before.

Recognizing that pub DotA is a completely different game and that you should go in with a different mindset will save you a lot of frustration (since you stop worrying so much about your teammates), and win you a lot more games.

On a different notion, I feel like the quality of pub games has gone up over time as I have continued playing dota.

Whether this is due to higher skill brackets that Im in, more availability of VoDs, or maybe people just getting better, i'm not sure.

It's just MMR slowly working, thou the amount of high level people has definitely increased due to the tournament exposure being like thousand times higher than in dota1

also, from our earlier conversation, the keyword there is "communication reports"
If you are currently communication banned, any communication reports you receive in that time period do not contribute towards, nor result in additional bans.

So ability abuse reports still factor in if your banned I gather.
