Yes that is what we see now. It just feels like that is an all in strat. You need something to transition roof into after the push, which is where I see the problem right now.
It might just be selective bias on my part. Is there any place with stats for win rate against game time? I recall seeing it two months or so ago...

Is it though? The few times I have seen him was as solo mid or hard support I think.
Tree doesn't have to transition, at least not dps wise. That's what your mid and trilane carry are for. Tree just makes sure that they have as good a game as possible (making them win their lanes and being able to survive ganks and dive towers with Living Armor, and building teamoriented items such as Drum, Vlads etc. later on).

edit: The hero is really bad. His living armor is good for the first 10 minutes, after that he becomes a creep with a lot of hp. Stop bringing up the Treant Protector discussion every week, it's getting annoying.

Nah, not really. Living Armor is really strong early and still good later on (obviously in late game it's not too relevant anymore, but it's definitely not useless after 10 min, far from it). Seed is a 300 aoe heal on a 10 sec cd. His ult is decent to set up aoe spells.
The hero lacks damage, but that can be compensated if your other 4 heroes deal huge amounts of it (heroes like QoP, Gyro, Lesh etc.).

I have a dream where the draft consist of Puck, CM, Treant, Warlock & Spectre in that exact order. And fucking ban the Bat, Nyx, Rubick, Invoker & VS also in that order.
Treant go offlane-lane and max living armor. Puck solo mid. Warlock, CM skill aura & Spectre in the safe lane where spec just cannot die from the warlock heal and living armor spam, no matter how strong the offensive trilane lane from opponent is ( if they go for defensive tri, just leave the long lane, spec got free farm anyway. But this is highly unlikely since everyone wanna punish the spec pick when laning)
Then from mid game it's just wombo combo, start with Dream coil + silent into the bkb penetration with Inferno Overgrowth Haunt pwnage. Add in Fatal Bond & Freezing Field and even Hand of god cant save them, since the combo if done correctly offer so much damage and stop movement power ( Upheaval + Overgrowth + CM )
If someone ever pull this off it would be the most beautiful day in my life.
This will die vs a face rush pushing strat though. Have to engage fully every time if want to defend, as little AOE power of CM & Puck has no answer to the slow siege of LD & Chen. So you go big and win outright, or you go home

He can never be played as a carry.

He is over 50% winrate in Dota-Academy. 9-17. His last game is a win, but he did have a nasty losing streak recently.

You get a WD set with your first purchase, so if you never bought anything else you should get one with the compedium.

But CM is needed, she's the unsung core hero in that draft ( no pun intended hehe). CM babysit + mana regen for living armor spam ensure spec never die while laning.

Ring of basi does the same thing and only costs ~500g and frees up a hero slot.

The 0.65 regen means ~35s between per living armor though. Compare to 12s on cd in the case the CM aura. Yeah probably need to find some other hero with more defending power, but I cant think of any which provide both in laning power, reliable cc & long range aoe at the same time ... Besides, I just wanna see freezing field, overgrowth and fatal bond combo  .
Leshrac or Jakiro can be more ideal, but I like CM, personal preference haha.
Really love the idea of global skill power of CM & Treant though, can ensure you dont lose any lane too hard, which is quite important in case of spectre pick.
