So I have switched over from LoL, read the welcome post, but still have a few questions that I haven't seen answered yet.

I generally queue up for all pick/single draft, I still don't know the heroes very well (I watch the tournaments so I know a lot of their abilities, but the last hitting/turn speed are still very tricky), but I'm learning. The problem is that I try to pick to help the team, but it doesn't matter in all the games I've played (about 15 so far). I don't really mind people picking what they want, but I am annoyed that I have to buy courier/wards in 90% of games and that most of my teammates start without consumables (Wraith Band/Boots/Basilius starts are apparently really popular).

Adding on to this, there are a few things I have to unlearn from LoL. I cancel my TP a lot in DOTA 2 because in LoL you will port in the last moment even if you issue a command. Turn speeds are something I have a hard time getting used to, as well as carrying a TP around. Mid is very different too.

I'm enjoying the heroes and item variety a lot, so many fun abilities and items to play with! The only problem I currently have is not having people to play with, my IRL buddies all play World of Tanks.

what you want to do for lower level games is to pick heroes that can be successful with fairly minimum interaction with your team. i assume ur mainly solo queing, so heroes like qop, storm spirit, shadow fiend, weaver, natures prophet, can all really do well with minimal help from your team. seeing as how u say u do mainly solo que, learn good mid heroes that control the tempo of the game as well as some good junglers that can come out and own with farm

as for the mechanics thing that just comes with time

You don't have to start with wards/chick. Maybe chick if you're hard randoming (which you should be doing) but wards definitely aren't something that needs to be bought ASAP since most of the people ganking in trench games have invis anyhow (because why else would you even stop pushing out lane by afk autoattacking). Maybe buy some wards on your first or second back if you need. Chances are no one in your pub games would use the vision correctly so there's not a huge point in buying wards.

You can shift-queue commands while you're teleporting. So just get in the habit of shift-queueing what you're trying to do and you can keep that habit somewhat (which is actually a good habit, as little downtime as possible is best).

Hopefully you'll start to meet people in your games and can make some friends that way but in the meantime there are a fair amount of people on TL or Reddit who should be fine to friend you and play a few games as long as you're not a complete idiot (which you don't seem like you are). Just a note for in-game behavior and for talking to most Dota players: don't say minions, don't say champions, don't talk about LoL. People get annoyed by that a fair amount.

Hi, and welcome

You don't have to pick a support every game to win. Just pick a hero you enjoy playing and play him a lot. Buy the courier if needed but that's about it, and pick some regen unlike your teammates. You're probably matched at the low skill level since you're new, so it doesnt matter if your team composition is bad.

When I switched I started playing Tidehunter if you want a suggestion of a hero to start with. His animation is average so you will get used to last hitting and the turning rate at a decent rate, he can get solo kills in the early game, he's pretty tanky which makes up for your mistakes and his ultimate is somewhat easy to use but very powerful. And it's a fun hero to play because you destroy teams with Ravage.

In the words of GD's resident dota guru:

I think one of the hurdles to get over coming from a game like BW or SC2 is that in pub games, you should not try too hard to emulate pro play. Obviously there are certain aspects of the game that can be learned from watching pro play, but being successful in pubs requires a certain different mindset to be successful. Thinking about the game too hard from the team perspective (which is the way competitive games are approached) will lead to a lot of frustration in pub games because your teammates will always let you down if you think like that. You have to think a lot harder about your own development and developing your own role in the game (which, in many cases, will mean play more selfishly).

I'd say past the point where you have the basics and are accessing a lot of resources like pro games/streams/etc. this difference in mindset can increase your success and your ability to win games a lot. It also makes pub games less frustrating because it's a lot less aggravating to play pubs if you stop worrying so much about what your teammates are doing wrong.

Liquidparty steamgroup.

We don't use it much for teaching new guys nowadays but I'm pretty sure none of the people in there will mind talk like that.

Just read this. This is what I've been seeing in Twitchtv too. The only time Dota2 bested SC2 is morning in America where we have tournaments game going on. Most of the time Dota2 has been losing to SC2 pretty handily. What leads to such a decline in viewers?

Nothing? Viewership fluctuates. WCS just started, that was a good boost for SC2, a lot of Dota 2 tournaments already finished, etc. I don't think tournament stream numbers or even personal stream numbers actually dropped for any of those games.

It's done by minutes watched as well, the fact that there are constant WCS streams on 3 diferent timezones probally lead to a big boost to SC2 numbers. I didn't see where it said Dota numbers dropped, as you assume with "a decliene in viewers".

There is no decline in viewers.

WCS is running like 18 hours per day. When Dota actually has tournaments running it is above SC2.

You also need to consider investment of money => viewer numbers. What you're seeing is a bunch of small tournament organizers versus Blizzard paying 4 major organizations to run tournaments. If the first month running they weren't ahead of Dota, that would be quite sad.

Didn't HotS just come out mid-March? That might be why SC2 is getting more viewers again right now (or got more viewers in April, that is)

Not the compendium though. It's still up afaik.

And it's worth pointing out that for my side of the globe, which includes little places like china and SEA, we woke up to server maintenance.
