They had a game that tons of people were already willing to buy/had already bought, and they made the switch to F2P/microtransactions. and it worked out pretty well Because their test worked, it gave them the confidence that the same model will work in dota2. Just look at LoL. no matter what you think about it's gameplay, it has a gigantic playerbase, largely because of the way the F2P/microtransaction system attracts new players.
