TP is of course the easiest/safest way. Just make sure a wild kunkka doesn't appear to "X" you back to his buddy.
Or a wild Disruptor to Glimpse you back. Probably more common than Kunkka these days.

I'm just going to fill my first egg with whatever essences I get and see what comes out. With it all expiring on the 12th, I just don't have the time to sit and collect essences and then trade for a specific setup. I'll just jam whatever I find in to my egg, and what I get is what I get. Who knows, maybe I stumble on to something awesome.

It's the eggs that confuse me. The essences seem to be incredibly rare, and with Diretide being as short as it appears to be, did Valve expect anyone but the most hardcore of players to ever collect enough essences to do something with their egg? They must have, because they want to sell you more eggs...wouldn't you think the essences would be easier to come by?
I really like the idea of it, and I'm glad their doing it in beta to practice the execution of this stuff...but if you want people to buy eggs, you might want to make the essence drop rate such that someone with a job and a life outside of Dota can ever get enough essences to complete their first egg.
e: I guess what I'm saying is, why would I ever buy another egg when it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to cram enough Diretide in to fill up my first one.
The egg will hatch into a courier with a single essence so don't worry.

I don't think it would be that hard to figure out what it is. Pretty much the only skill that ever really gets talked about when he is picked is Ice Path..

If you want the highest tier of courier, yes, else I think that just 1 of each is enough

The essences expire on the 12th, but given other events like the summer chests, the event itself probably ends before then.

If you have already filled it out to the extent that it is Seraphic (which needs 3 of each essence), then you will need to purchase a new egg from the store. Can't remember exactly how much it is, about £2.50 I believe.

Or trade with people who played 1 game of diretide, decided it wasn't for them, and went back to regular matchmaking. Thats how I'm getting all my spare eggs (silly friends XD).

If anyone has a single red essence that they would be willing to trade I would really appreciate it, im willing to trade a small number of commons for it.
