Well, since you've played 150 games, I'm almost certain that you are where you should be, mmr-wise. On occasion if you wait particularly long in queue (like 4-5+ minutes), you might end up in a game below (or above!) your level. You can always cancel/re-queue if you've waited for a few minutes and don't want to gamble. Aside from that, I find the matchmaking in dota to be quite good.

Posting this from the tournament thread for G-1 League:

Hey guys, as part of our ongoing efforts to improve the stream quality/experience for Beyond the Summit, GoDz and I are recruiting a legion of volunteers to help us clean up the chat.

For now, we're mostly looking to eradicate the most terrible aspects of the chat -- link spam, racism, sexism, flaming, or anything else that's blatantly offensive, rude, or distracting. For some reason stream chat seems to bring out the worst in people, but we're hoping to foster an environment where people can enjoy the games/casts and talk about them freely without having to churn through all the nonsense that's polluted the stream in the past.

We'll be using a Skype group to coordinate and organize everything, so if you are interested in helping out, you'll need to have a Skype account and make sure to check it regularly. We'll normally be streaming sometime between the hours of 3 PM SGT and 12 AM SGT for the G-1 League, but the exact hours will vary from day to day and will most likely differ for future events.

If you're interested in helping out, please write a short blurb about yourself and and PM it to me. Be sure to include your twitch.tv and Skype usernames so I can add you. If you're a TL staffer/contributor, a regular viewer of the BTS stream, or someone else who's actively involved in the TL/Dota 2 community (pro player, caster, personality, etc), let me know what your twitch username is and I'll mod you.

I have seen a lot of anti-Vanguard sentiment, now with tranquil boots. But is it still useful on some heroes?

I still get it on Nightstalker for example, but I'm wondering if skipping it for a quick Aghanim's is more useful.

NS usually gets regen from bottle+urn and HP boosts from BKB / Aghanims and their respective parts. No big reason to get Vanguard on him since regen/HP buffer are the main reasons why you could argue for getting it.

Am I the only one who believes the game will receive major balance changes in the nearby future (as in a year or so)? As versions passed the rate at which gold can be farmed has constantly increased and passive items, or damage items (*) scale almost too well with one another and provide really massive benefits compared to the stats on levelup. Every type of auto attack enhancer can be bought AND comes with a huge damage boost in addition to the effect (crit, bash, mana burn, evasion, etc), so that greatly devalues similar native abilities.

Most active items also share similar properties if you accept the idea that health and mana are somewhat binary values (as in you either survive the fight or you don't, you either have mana to cast a spell or you don't; the ideea is that the effect of your abilities is the same regardless of your leftover hp/mana). Why should you pick a heal heavy lineup when you can replace 1-2 of those heroes and get mek + pipe instead (yes, those items cost gold, but more on that in a second) and get some heavy disablers or pushers to give you more control over the game.

That brings me to another point, three things items are limited in are pushing power, disables and mobility.

First, pushing power. There are no items that offer comparable building pushing to spells like mass wards, plague wards, edict or creep control (chen/ench). The only ones that come close are necronomicon and manta. You could argue vladimir's and even mek + pipe are pushing items, but they fall in a different category. Those items just beef up the little, mindless and easy to manipulate creeps (**). Necro has more or less fixed values (slightly improved by auras or lycan's passive) and manta, while scaling, is still limited. In short, nothing items provide can compare to pushing skills.

Second, disables. Disables provided by items are petty compared to hero skills. Just compare Scythe's hex with a similar hero ability: more than twice the cooldown, slightly longer duration and lower mana cost (with the item itself providing considerable mana pool and regen). But mana cost is easily handled by stuff like arcane boots, soul ring, or just having a bigger mana pool to begin with. Similar comparisons can be made with Orchid and Eul's (storm brewling, similar to bane's nightmare, etc).

Third, mobility. Twelve items provide it: force staff, blink dagger, drums, eul's, yasha, manta and 6 types of boots (if you include basic boots of speed as one, substract 1). Aside Eul's (which provides a highly situational disable and really low +ms) you see them every game (well, yasha mostly on agility heroes and manta is a great natural extension of it). Drums is an aura so you see 1-2 per team; every support builds either a force staff or a bkb (only if they have channeled spells) as luxury; blink is a great choice on 90% of the hero pool because of the snap mobility it provides. In a game where being even slightly out of position means you can get shut down and killed before you can pop anything, mobility is king.

In my opinion this is why we always see similar heroes in comp games. It is natural for them to only pick the most optimal heroes, they want to win, they get paid to win, not for putting up a show, because we enjoy watching competitions where people give 110%, not constantly trolling and messing around. They always pick pushers, disablers, mobility heroes and heroes that scale very very well with farm. Notice the repetition of the word "very". Why pick a right click hero like drow or sniper when a void or AM are just as good with similar farm, but they can get it faster and safer due to base skillset. When you can easily get auto attack improvements, survivability and mana, why bother picking heroes with poor disables, poor pushing or poor mobility? Those are the hardest areas to improve upon with gold, whereas xp has a soft cap.

When you reach lvl 16 all your skills have their maximum potential. To make it even worse, the skills you max last are the weakest (duh) and some ultimates are gamebreaking even at level 1, so the "soft cap" of xp is easily reachable. Gold on the other hand has another issue: items, compared to hero stat growth and abilities, are OP and scale well with eachother (it seems to be much harder to try to explain this than I thought since English is not my main language, I hope you understand my point). Compare 5-6k worth of items with 6.5-8k worth of xp (hope I'm doing this right, XP seems to be gained at 1.3x the rate of gold as far as creeps/jungle is concerned): best case scenario you get 2 levels (so maybe 3-4 points of each stat + 2 skill points) compared to one expensive item like hex/heart/etc; at the time you would be considering such an item chances are those 2 skill points would only mean two attribute bonuses, otherwise compare things like upg. boots/mek/force staff with an equivalent amount of a skill (damn, it's a messy comparison). In short, the fact that xp is less crucial after hitting important levels (usually 11-14) and because hero kills are worth more xp/gold ratio compared to the standard creep xp/gold ratio the whole balance of power is further skewed in the favor of gold.

Some years ago people realized the advantages gold brought and started doing multi-carry strats which led to boring farmfests. Icefrog took notice and increased the gold granted on hero kills to allow ganking heroes and strats to keep up with multi-ricers strats in the mid game as they should. I can't remember the version or the year, but I'm pretty sure it was around when the dota-allstars site got into some trouble and had to split so that is around 2008-2009 if my memory is correct (might not be though).

The 6.75 version closely resembles Icefrog's decision at that time in order to encourage more hero interaction. People started realizing the huge advantage power creeping brought, and combined with quick towers to grant a head start the rcing would begin.

This is why I've lately been wondering about the direction DotA 2 is heading to. History seems to repeat itself and this seems more like another band-aid sort of fix until the same problem occurs again, but this time slightly different. Simply put, there is more and more gold in a standard game. Is it time to start tackling the difficult root of the problem, the power of gold compared to experience?

(*) by passive meaning items with no active, so for example mek or blink dagger is a active item, whereas stuff like butterfly, hart, daedalus, even manta are passive
(**) there is a huge difference between the creeps and player controlled minions, that's why i use these terms instead.
(***) note that I'm speaking of normal length games (30-50 mins), not of 2-hour long farm fests.
