For all those of you who are in the upper half of DotA players, how did your improvement process go? Did you just play for a while and get good with time or was there some kind of practice you were doing? Reading guides/strats or just figuring shit out on your own? Focus on a couple of heroes or try everything?

I'm curious because I'm relatively new and I'm not sure about the improvement process. Would be interesting to hear what good players have to say.

Well, most of my know-how comes from DotA1, and that is too far back for me to remember.
I just played a lot.
From the Ghastly Eyrie I can see to the ends of the world, and from this vantage point I declare with utter certainty that this one is in the bag!

I've changed my key bindings several times, but the game keeps changing them back. Anyone know why?

Everyone giving different answers.

When I first started playing, I played a few heroes often and rarely left my comfort zone (did this for about 3 years).

Then I started randoming basically every game (for about a year). You get a lot of shit for randoming but you learn the game a lot deeper.

For the last year, where I've been high in DotA1 ladders and Very High skill in DOTA 2, I play within a role (4th or 5th position) with a group of players I know. I started playing designated support during my time as a nooby pub because I quickly realized there were never enough supports, and so picking support was the best way to win the game.

While I'm on the subject, supporting is manning up. Saying it right here and now. Supports could ALWAYS use another bracer or even better item, but they suck it up and buy wards/smoke/dust (if they're any good) with the majority of their pre-tower income. They man up and walk into a fight knowing full well how squishy they are, and if they're any good, they get their skills off and LIVE to tell the tale.

If anyone tells you only baddies play support, I have a 65% winrate with carries (I do especially well with afk ricers). I just don't enjoy it.

In summary: Crystal Maiden is the manliest hero.
Eagerly awaiting Techies.

Ha i know exactly how you feel bro. I was also the most flexible person in my clan back then and the clanlord loved me so much because i can play almost anything so he could draft whatever he wants. Cooking this 'how to support' guide atm and i really think that good support is rare as fck nowadays, even more rare is the people who appreciate good support, rampage seems like the only thing people looking for since forever.

I especially know the moments you said about 'they get their skills off and LIVE to tell the tale.', i played alot of ES back then blink in and do my stuffs and I fcking survived and then the clanlord will always acknowledge my 'achievement'. Oh i missed my cw days :'( (none of the people play dota anymore sadly).

I prefer to play support atm is mainly due to no mate can support well. When i play carry i want really really good support service otherwise i'd rage really hard at them and typically the whole team fell apart before i can come online -_- And just like you said playing support is the best way to win game because frankly most of the players in pub only know how to play carry but absolutely terrible at supporting. I'd rather let people mid/carry or whatever all day and do what i could to help them.

and yes, CM is my favourite support hero! Too much hate from opponent to my bitchy CM <3

ye because maxing cog/battery is bad on hardlane and that's the only lane where you play clock.

Clock mid is good in pubs. Doesn't beat a lot of competitive mids, but has good matchups vs lots of pub mids.

He really only loses to anti-melee competitive mids like QoP who will just shadow strike the living snot out of you for days. Outside of those heroes, he actually does ok vs a vast majority of competitive mids. He can handle Invoker for example fairly well as long as he doesn't play dumb and get way out of position, and can burn alot of his mana with Cogs + Bottle Crowing all while harassing with Rocket.

Mine was a combination of playing a lot, actively reading forums and so on where I pick up a lot of random tips here and there, watching streams and asking people better than me for tips on my play.

I don't know if I'd fall into the upper half, but the majority of my games fall in high MMR now.

I played a lot of WC3 DotA and I was absolutely terrible at it (relative to now) because the majority of my friends were worse than me and if we ever played pubs in LAN cafes we'd usually get stomped and called noob and I didn't really get why or how.

Now it's much easier to see. So my advice would be to find friends/people to play with who know what they're doing and listen to what they tell you because while simply playing might improve your mechanical skill, it won't improve your map awareness or teamwork. One of the best ways to learn laning IMO is to look at those games where you got absolutely stomped and figure out why/what you did wrong. I think it's much easier to improve now with so many streams and forums available. One of the guides I came across a while ago and didn't fully grasp and would have improved my game a lot more is this one: http://www.playdota.com/guides/genosis-guide-to-lane-control (Note that it is quite old, and while I think it's still pretty good some specifics may be out of date)
