Sweet, they can only manage to bring out a single hero when they have every single concept ready in the time LoL brings out 3 new ones.

Going like this the game's going to be fully released by christmas of 2018 or so. I'm sure I'll still be playing video games then ...

I don't know why it bothers people that Valve went into total development standstill leading up to and during the International.

We got the International for it after all.

The last patch prior to the International was August 15 (and intentionally did not contain a new hero because of potentially affecting balance at the International). If we assume that development basically stopped then and picked up the Monday after TI2 ended, it means we got a new hero after only a week and a half, which is really not that bad.

Honestly I doubt very few people at Valve did much work on Dota that week given how burned out they must have been after the tournament, making it more impressive.

Really, they give their development team the time of the international off? That's news to me... Maybe it's understandable then.

How the hell did you even read that out of it?

Valve don't have a "development team" or a "production team". They just employ people whose skills are wanted and let them find where they are most valuable. As such, many of them would be working on the international, which meant afterwards they were burnt out. And over the course of the international, they weren't working on developing the game, they were developing the tourney.

Did you not notice in the various event videos where the entire event was basically run by Valve staff?

They didn't materialize a bunch of extra staff to run the event out of thin air.

Right, so a skilled programmer is probably most valuable as a programmer.

As such it'd make much more sense to me to, for instance, hire specific tournament organizer-people or even use volunteers for it while the programmers program but I guess I'm wrong.

I can say that it's not completely uncommon for software development companies to use their staff to run high profile events like this rather than contracting outside organizations/volunteers to do this.

Using staff to run the event gives you more direct control over making sure that nothing goes wrong while at the same time making sure that the event is being staffed by people who know their way around the game.

Losing some development time due to using your programmers to run the event is worth avoiding the risk of creating a PR fiasco if some volunteer who you have no real control over screws something up for your tournament.

From the interviews of people who were involved ( 2gd,luminous,purge,players,etc) it was very clear that Valve people were actually very deeply involved in the whole tournament. Each teams were assigned one Valve staff etc. Valve actually hired professional TV crew and event organizers to help but Valve ended up still being very hands-on and have their input on everything especially on things that they think need perfecting. I think that is the reason why TI2 was so good. It was run by people who were knowledgeable about Dota 2 and are actually passionate about the scene.

You won't get the same dedication and knowledge from volunteers.

A programmer isn't necessarily just a programmer. He can be like Icefrog or Zoid and be very knowledgeable and helpful And I think it's a good thing that they are fans of their own game and the scene who participate in every way.

Also, don't judge progress by just heroes released and patch notes. There are a lot of hidden contents in each patch that are not readily apparent. In this patch, there are some particles of centaur and magnataur and also what looks like to be a progress in the tutorial system.

I don't know how many people Valve has working on Dota 2 but I find it to be going at an oke pace because each release is pretty much done very well, I'd say they can take their time

I talked to a friend who plays LoL today who was shocked at the fact that heroes sometimes don't go into -CM until 1.5-2 years after their release (Thrall/Wisp were added in 6.68, which came out in like ~August 2010, and were added to -CM in 6.74 at the beginning of this year).

Also, wtf @ the modified Rosh pit/Scourge ancients location in this supposedly leaked 6.75 beta.

I thought this one was different, seeing as it doesn't have some of the changes that were in the other "fake" one. Could still be a fake though, which is why I prefaced what I said with "supposedly".

Actually, looking at the old one that got linked before, these are probably too similar for this one to be real. Guess I should just wait instead of rumormongering.

Its ok. We should get 6.75 in a few weeks. It might be a LONG time for dota 2 though, especially if the map changes. The version might be fake but I feel like we are still open to discuss the position of roshan currently and the position it was on the "leaked image." Personally, I feel like he was positioned a bit further from the closest scourge tower but it still doesnt really fix the problem. Heroes that are good at engaging in that position would probably get even better with the narrow choke points. Also, The opening to his cave is extremely awkward and it really looks like he would need to add another ramp going down from the common ward spot near the medium camp of the radiant jungle to make something like that work.

Its possible we might be getting it in time - Valve may have been working on it during TI2. Wouldn't depend on it though - 'cause you know, Valve...
