Her midgame isn't very strong, sure snake is decent but it's not strong.
And her shield isn't good without items either and split shot quite obviously isn't without items either, and her ulti doesn't do much for mid-game ganks either.
She scales really really well with items, thus the hard carry part.

Second position carries like for example CK have a lot of good things in the midgame:
A good stun.
Tons of mobility.
And a gap closer.

But, what if you get a bf on her!?!?!!

Playdota says nothing about that and it's been too long for me to remember.

Like what? If you are asking about SR, i think its life removal not self-damage.

It's weird how Siren is the better Naga of the two now.
Last time I was interessed in dota 1, Medusa was one of the best carry out there and Siren wasn't remade thus was terrible

Also she indeed could be a part of a trilane, preferably one that's designed to be up against the enemy's hardcarry trilane. Her lane control would be very beneficial in that situation.

How does putting her mid help with any of her issues?

Her laning isn't any better or worse than it needs to be, it's just her lack of midgame presence compared to the carries that are actually relevant. Her gank is almost nonexistent (no hard disables and no single target burst), her pushing is ok, but nothing to write home about (certainly in comparison to the 5 carries that are actually regularly played, her pushing is weaker than all of them), and her teamfight presence is fairly weak. The only thing her kit allows her to do early game is farm, and even with a kit that's solely capable of farming, she doesn't farm as fast as Anti-mage (the weakest midgame presence of the commonly played carries).

Honestly, she shares this problem with other hard carries for good reason: Icefrog probably (and rightfully) wants to reduce game lengths to reasonable lengths compared to the other games in the genre, and for games to reliably finish in under an hour (with 40 minutes probably as the target game length). Naturally, it's hard to make game lengths stay down if 1 hero in every game doesn't become a presence until 30 minutes. As various aspects of the game shift toward the earlier stages of the game, hard carries need to be relevant in that early stage as well, which is why, again, the most popular carries are those with powerful midgame teamfighting ability.

Hmm yeah I guess that really is a hurdle that's almost impossible to overcome... It really sucks that almost all of my favorite heroes are so terrible -.- So what do you think should change for those heroes to get some gameplay? Should they be made so that they come online slightly earlier but end up being slightly weaker later on? Or is it all right if they're only viable as very situational niche picks? Speaking of which, I really wonder when the next DotA patch is coming out. The gameplay seems really nice and varied overall right now but I don't think that the same thing can be said about picks... I wonder what they're going to change.

Magnataur might have potential as a silly "support" who allows your hardcarry to farm without having to committ to a farming item...

I'm pretty sure armlet is HP loss, seeing as it's not listed with a damage type.

Like what? There's no way to deal yourself "damage" with items in the game. Soul ring is hp removal, so that doesn't work, as it's not actually damage.

I'm gonna get WC3 running and test it.
I know soul ring doesn't work, which is why i was wondering if armlet hp loss could be negated or if it'd block self-damage from abilities like rot and dark pact. It's purely theoretically, but i was just wondering.

Nope doesn't work with armlet, but i still assume it'd work with pudge rot or slark dark pact.

Can someone explain to me these 'pro' Naga Siren builds? Especially the chinese who build like linkens and radiance as first two items. It honestly seems completely awful.

Why don't more people build her aggressive and take advantage of her unstoppable ult and midgame presence? Why can't she run mid, bottle, arcanes, diffusal first, heart/manta, heart/manta and constantly push towers when siren is off cooldown? My friend builds naga this way in pubs (hurp derp I know pubs are shit compared to pro level even in 'very high' bracket) but the theorhetical gameplay seems the same. He ganks or pushes towers every siren cd because it's basically no risk. The only thing you possibly lose out on is some farm in lane. If the gank is successful you get a big gank and push tower. If gank is failing you ult and escape. We win like 80%+ of our games when he mid nagas with this aggressive build.

I understand the radiance allows you to farm faster and can give more lane control mid/late but it always delays your real potential for so long. I don't get linkens either. I know she has mana issues but those are pretty much solved with mana boots. I just hate seeing this weak ass pseudo-carry naga that seems to be exactly how all chinese play her. It seems way less beneficial and we saw countless naga's lose with these linken first/second builds because they just didn't do anything.

tl;dr why isn't aggressive midgame naga ever played? Why would you go linkens over diffusal first, why would you go linkens after radiance instead of diffusal or manta?

I believe Icefrog said that the 6.75 is slated for some time after the International.

Honestly, there are probably a couple carries that are almost there as far as being able to have a presence midgame or farming fast enough to come online early enough. There are just a few problem cases that are probably a bit harder to deal with (relating to heroes with certain passives/steroids that are weak early but become incredibly powerful with items).

She was used for her teamfight capability together with tide and darkseer etc.

Morph was used for the dmg

As far as I'm aware, the only 2 Nagas I saw build Radiance at TI2 were Hao and XBOCT, neither of whom I'd consider good players to learn how to play Naga from.

Treads+Linken is actually a fairly fresh thing as far as the Chinese teams are concerned (supposedly taken from iceiceice according to 2009's commentary of the 2nd Zenith vs. LGD game in groupstage). The more common build from DotA 1 is Arcanes->Heart->Diffusal/Manta, potentially just keeping the Vit Booster and finishing Heart later, or building Vanguard, if the game demands it.

I know, I don't think she's even a real hard carry. Not ever game she was selected with a morphling. Yet still crappy linkens builds were used.

TheYango: I still don't understand the linkens but good points on the other fronts. I also watched some Naga games (yesterday?) where I believe it was korok or maybe pajkatt going linkens first. I just hate it. The dota 1 standard sounds pretty much how I "think" she should be played.

Linkens is a good item for the regen too, naga is mana intensive.
It also depends on the enemy and their heroes.

Not sure about that. Linkens is such a sketchy item and for the cost I don't see how it can be justified. It can help her get the ult off but I rarely, if ever have seen her struggle to get it off. That much sunk cost to not even truly have 100% safety in getting the ult off seems really cost inefficient.

linkens and radiance are farming items. its usually one or the other for naga. Linkens allows riptide spam while making you bigger overall (and lets you get boots like treads over tranquil or mana) while radiance will let you clear jungle and lanes at the same time with just one riptide use. Getting both seems a tad overkill as if you have radiance you're gonna want a heart right away to give your burn illusions staying power and if you have a linkens I see manta style as the more tempting item as you'll have the mana to sustain farm and its use.

Overall though I think naga just wants to have big fat illusions that can kill creep waves and jungle. She turtles like a beast with either item and hp on top. I used to be a huge fan of radiance tranquils on her but I also love the linkens treads. Radiance for canceling big dagger heroes is still a go to for sure but linkens is definitely more flexible for the next item choice.

Agreed with this post - but essentially it just comes down to the ability to split push. Linkens is simply a facet of being able to push a little more agressively with her actual self solo and avoid being ganked - usually you pick up power treads rather than arcane with this build. However, skipping linkens, grabbing arcanes and vanguard, then radiance is also fine. Again, this just comes down to the fact that you can split up your illusions while you stay in the jungle, and solo push your lane (safe lane) while you are able to farm somewhere safe (jungle), and put pressure on their towers. If you watch burning play naga - he does this a lot (and threatens t3 towers every time). It's a very strong build that punishes any mistake by the other team, though I'm not overly fond of the linkens build (again, to deal with 3-4 man smoke ganks).

Radiance in chinese understanding is a farming item. You clear creeps very quick but your team fight presence is not strong due to lacking survibility. Linken is more of a solid build from i have seen. Diffu and heart are almost the standard items on all illu heroes.
