By the way, a non-shopped screencap would greatly increase your credibility... and I need a screencap if you claim to have higher than around 90 wpm
I'm still in the process of switching to the dvorak keyboard layout, I think my highscore would be a bit higher using qwerty, but I'll soon surpass my qwerty speed :D
*Position is assigned in real-time, so over time your position could be worse than shown especially due to the massive position inflation caused by TL
This list is in order of points scored. If a tie should occur, then the list will proceed by best position.
Edit: I need to know how many points you scored for me to put you on the list. Also, if you update your score, it might be better for you to make a new post so I don't miss it.
I'll try to update scores as often as I can. Any reasonable scores will be added to the list asap. Any extremely high scores (~somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 wpm) will have to be verified with a screencap or other proof.
I know I made some errors typing this score list up. If you see any, let me know.
try #1: You type 626 characters per minute You have 116 correct words and you have 1 wrong words
try #2: 512 points, so you achieved position 2449 of 1251501 on the ranking list
You type 659 characters per minute You have 123 correct words and you have 0 wrong words
this test is full of shit why does it have to wait until you type the last word of the 2-3 lines before it shows you the next 2-3 lines? my process was like
type-type-type-type*pause...wait for the next 2 lines to show up..*type-type-type-*pause..wait* what a joke test
plus it's much faster to type things that actually make sense (i.e. sentences) as opposed to random words
overall, this test sucks
OH and the thing that highlights the words you type lags. it was like a word behind so at times i got confused and type the same word twice because i thought i hadn't type it yet, forcing me to delete t-t
On November 25 2008 07:59 ydg wrote: Kind of a bs test because the words are random and some have more letters than others, and also the huge delay between parts
Try doing it multiple times to increase your score. Also, this test uses common world in the English language to help increase your overall speed, so I think it's a good tool to improve your speed.
i will try harder when i get home tonight... i know i'm faster than that, i've done typing tests before and got faster + more accurate results than that.
Meh getting 95-100 These types of tests are useless since we're not used to typing random words, we're used to typing phrases, which is more realistic and I can do much better ;;

yeah i get so many words wrong because i type the next most common words after the world like if it had "what would" i would type "what would you like to do?" or some shit like that
and the fact that its only 2 lines of text is stupid, i waste like 1 second waiting for the next set of words to pop up, they think we're all dyslexic or something.
but 109 wpm, "typespeed" on cygwin is the bestest :D
no, how fast you read, how fast you move your fingers, how accurate you are are all very important factors i'm doing this on a shitty laptop keyboard which sadly is more responsive than my desktop keyboard haha
On November 25 2008 09:56 gg_hertzz wrote: anything 120 + is fucking amazing. My highest was 95 and I tried really hard. Is it the keyboard that makes a difference?
I find those words easy to type because of hours upon hours of chatting through msn messenger. I only type at like half that speed if I'm typing formal stuff. I don't think the keyboard makes much of a difference cause I can get the same speed on a laptop keyboard too.

Probably. I feel that im being hindered by my 10 year old piece of shit

I see your point and I'll update the lists by score. The list order should be the same, because I think the ranks are only dependent on the score you receive... but you do have a good point.

Also, something annoying about the test is after you finish a set of words, you have to hit enter and wait for the next set to appear.
I didn't include it because you had a great score without proof. The image link isn't working... Post your scrncap when you can so I can add your score to the list!
Edit: nevermind, it works now
Edit2: Alright, I updated the list. Nice job getting in the top 10!
i think whatever set up you got makes a big difference. i switched from firefox to explorer and i could tell explorer was a little faster to type. my keyboard is also not conducive to fast typing either.
using IE helped with the lag and positioning the window so i couldn't see the timer helped psychologically though i'm still pretty damn slow compared to what my high school tests said a couple years back
Pretty sure I could type faster if it weren't just random words... I type extremely fast, but only because I already know what I'm going to type before I type it... This test makes me have to read words in an order that makes no sense, which makes me pause a lot... There's really no point in developing the skill of typing random nonsensical sentences...

Yeah, it's easier for me to update your scores if you repost them.
By the way, why is that Empyrean has more points, yet you have a higher rank?
Edit: I noticed from everyone's scores that points are not calculated based purely on cpm as I had originally thought. Now I'm not so sure how points are calculated.
Edit2: I made a mistake with Empyrean's points, I put him down with 563 but he actually had 546. Please let me know if I make any errors so I can fix them!

yea i agree I type much faster.... although not crazy fast, when i'm typing out as I think in my head. I also think it would be easier typing out actual sentences and paragraphs rather than random words.
the position is going to change over time as more and more people take the test if i were the 10th person to take the test i'd probably be number 1 wiht my 125 if i'm the millionth person to take the test then my ranking will be significantly lower so even if people keep getting 125's and the same number of pts, because i took the test earlier, my rank looks higher even though it just means that in reality my rank has gone down
Normally I'm eaither staring at the keyboard writing what I'm thinking. If I'm copying something, it's generally sentences with words in a sensible order that I can remember as I type it out before glancing at the next one. Having to go back and forth from screen to KB for each random word really slows me down. I am getting better at hammering words out without looking at it the keyboard (and doing this test repeatedly could help/provide motivation) but for now I get a middling score :-/
313 points, 77 wpm, 407 cpm, 99169 position, 0 wrong screeny (as if I'd fudge that score)
So I just tried typeracer (which someone mentioned earlier) and typing actual sentences let me concentrate on the keyboard (haha) and I got 91 WPM. Not as much better as I would have liked, but better indeed. screeny
477 points, so you achieved position 3556 of 1259963 on the ranking list You type 602 characters per minute You have 117 correct words and you have 0 wrong words
This test completely fails at finding your actual typing speed. =( For one it's not in sentence form, for two it's a selection of very common words, and for three the more you take it the higher your speed will become. I got 120 wpm on my second go, and I know as a fact I only type about 80-90 in a 'real' test. Any test that is taken more than once is inaccurate as well when it comes to finding 'actual' typing speed.
Not to mention the fastest typer in the world isn't much faster than what some of us are posting, haha.

You do realise that she gets slower the longer the test goes on for a reason right? Compare dronebabo's 140 to her 212, and that's a relatively accurate comparison, and a massive difference.
I've gotten more than that on a good day on my regular computer - but it was on Facebook and I don't know if it is different. It was not much better though, like 128 or something, but yeah w/e.

izzy, there's no way you could have typed 253 words per minute. you got 30 wrong, but the time you took to type up those words still takes away from your time limit.
basically you were typing 4.2 words per second, plus spaces, plus the fact that you had to delete the characters of the wrong words and re type them, and changing to the next screen.

No hard feelings though. Feel free to post a score without intentionally lagging on your end, and I'll post it on the leaderboard.

Haha yeah i was thinking why you put mine up there wonder how pachi did it cuz after x amount of words it does just say undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined

Already mentioned that I gg.net'd this test to get that score. Which obviously involves copy and pasting the given line and hitting space. I could then of course like in the above pic, spend the rest of the time spamming characters to show a more legit cpm.
The undefineds come at 300+ and you can't type or enter new words.
Yeah eventhough I'm very comfortable with English it's so much instincts to recognize the words quickly enough that I feel that I am at a small disadvantage by not being a native.
I've problems getting in 'the zone'. I had 80 but I think with practice and a few attempts I can get at least 90. Still low so yeah.

I have to agree with you. A lot of words such as "the" and "and" become second-nature to English speakers when they are typed, and they become committed to your finger's muscle memory. But, that's just how the program was coded--to give you common English words. I think the idea is if you get really fast at typing them, then you'll improve your English typing speed since they are so common.
Anyway, have you tried the speedtest with your language? And, if so, did you type faster?

Yeah, I remember that someone else found that too. It's interesting, but no one is ever going to hit 300 wpm anyway
Hahaha, I personally think reflexes have a say in this too because the biggest pauses I have are when I've typed all the words and then the screen changes...usually it takes me a full second or more to react and start typing... yeah I have slow reflexes lol.

Not really. I'm sure that your speed is higher than the average person. It's only when you compare your speed to others on this list that you might seem slow. I imagine that out of everyone who took this test, only 5%~10% bothered to post their times, and out of that percentage, the majority of the people who did post their score are probably the fastest typers on TL. So what happens is this list is kinda skewed and it makes me look like I can't type worth a shit, hahaha :D
The rankings are crazy. I found a way to get extra time, and got 171 wpm. That's only rank like 2000. Either other people are doing the same thing I was or O.O
I got around 100.. but not much point when most of TL.net get 100+... but hey, since Albanians are such a rare breed of people, and since Albanian conveniently lacks weird letters or accents--anyone care to take the typing test in Albanian? I put up another whole list for you. didn't feel like English and Albanian scores can be compared directly. you guys have long words
oh jeez i just tried the albanian test i got owned (relatively) guess i owe a lot more to muscle memory on typing certain words than actual hand-eye coordination. ah the magic of repetition.
fwiw i got 48 fjales with 367 cpm on my first try and why is there so many j's in that language =( and that kyqem word isn't very friendly to type either
If I fixed my posture I might be able to get up to 120s... and with a bit of practice maybe 130s but I doubt I could go above that without a lot of effort.
lol I did so terrible on my first attempt. wpm52 cpm329 2 wrong not too much better on my 2nd ): 59 346 1 wrong 3rd, 56 339 3 wrong I don't use home row, I use gamer typing which is like all left hand fingers and not all of my right hand fingers with my pointer and index doing the most work (especially on my right).
blah I give up. I did much better on a real test for verizon and I've beaten the Typing Of The Dead game and all the bonus levels which said I was much better.
Test seems kinda imba unless you take it like 5 times then average. Some words are harder than others or longer/shorter. The random word format is confusing to me sometimes too cause I have to look at the keyboard sometimes when I miss a letter. If you hit space or enter more than once it'll skip a word and give you a miss. If I get a typo it totally fucks my rhythm.

You shouldn't have to hit enter at all. Hitting the space bar is much faster. But yeah, I agree that missing a word because you hit spacebar twice is bad, but at least you hardly lose any time doing that.
I don't like typing tests where you don't type coherent sentences, I feel like half the time your brain wastes between words is just trying to figure out how to type in a pattern you've never used before and will never use again.
I started typing slightly slower for some reason (maybe it's because I've been awake for 30 hours straight atm). Anyway I got 66 WPM in English and 61 in Danish, kinda pathetic that I type faster in english though - lol... I think I normally type with around 70 WPM when I'm awake, not sure though. Gonna try again when I wake up after some sleep.
oh this again xD 563 points 137 wpm 736cpm, 1 error on my 2nd try. not quite as good as my score in OP... i think i'll never break 600 points. fuark. if i were hot_bid, i'd be mad, 599 lol
When I was younger my parents made me take a typing class. You had to complete a lesson (in Mario teaches typing! Awesome), get up to a certain proficiency with that day's character set, and pause the game with a certain wpm to show that you mastered it. Problem was, after you finished, you got to play Oregon Trail. I loved Oregon Trail. So when I realized that the letters always came out in the same order when you restarted I would just memorize the order, mash it in as fast as I could before the letters came up, and pause the game before my crappy typing lowered my score again. To this day I can go out and kill thousands of pounds worth of buffalo meat. But I can't type worth a damn.
BEST GAME EVER wasnt it for dream cast and you had your own keyboard an shit?
Yeh, was available for Dreamcast, PC and in the arcade as well LOL. They had cabinets with keyboards mounted on the front. I've only seen pictures, I imagine it was only actually available in Japanese arcades.
Characters running around with a keyboard (and a Dreamcast on their back in the DC version) was hilarious.
LOL I didn't realise there were Day9 comments on the youtube video. He must have mentioned it in a daily.
I have to agree that typeracer.com is a lot more fun, and more accurate. It actually has you type sentences out that make sense, and you can race other people and feel better about yourself.... haha

How do you achieve separation between your middle and ring finger on your left hand? That one thing is slowing my down by at least 15-20 wpm, since any rapid combination of asadasad or wesewesewesewese or something similar totally throws me off.

not sure what you mean by separation? i just kind of wing my typing, i don't have set keys that have to be hit by certain fingers. whatever feels comfortable, i do that. for your example, for example.. "a sad day" i'd just have my ring on 'a', middle on 's' and index on 'd' they don't have to move to type that at all (right index on y in this case) for "see a weasel" it'd be.. ring on s, middle on e, pinky on a, with the ring finger hitting w when needed dunno if those phrases are the type you had in mind
This is really annoying because I read the words as one sentence and I keep correcting the grammar and replacing words with words that make more sense.
Man, some of you guys type fast I wanna hit higher than 110 but I feel like my keyboard is limiting me by roughly 10 apm... and I'm not actually that bothered, I don't think the extra 50APM will amount to anything over any period of time. Impressive, none-the-less.
I absolutely hate these..... They always seem to be in US English, and we all know that the US can't spell at all.....
I'll read a word I'm supposed to type, and automatically try to type it in real English..... And then get screwed when I've gotta go back and fix it.....
I'm apparently about 72 WPM It's funny, the program caps at 299 WPM, after which it bugs out and says undefined over and over, but you can't finish a word anymore.
It would be interesting to see if the higher apm pros were higher on WPM as well.
btw, the ranking has changed considerably (e.g. Locked is no longer position "1607" he's closer to 1800, since the way this site works all info stays on and new info is just put in between)
I hit 104 with 0 incorrect my first go but I'm at work and I don't really want to keep trying to improve and get busted lol.. I'll try more when I get home, thanks for link!
I keep getting in the mid to high 130's... I don't understand how anyone could type 150 or higher without maybe getting lucky with the words or something. : (
I got 100, although I keep pausing when the line jumps because it throws me off. I if I give it a couple more tries I could probably hit 120ish. I think the max I ever hit was like 160ish which required extreme focus.
I don't have much trouble posting ~115, but I've never been able to go faster no matter how hard I practice. Some faster typists have suggested moving away from home row for certain keystrokes. I might try this.
Whoa, I got 93 wpm and thought it would suck compared to everyone else, but apparently it's passable lol...lately I don't get it but I just can't type "right" (i.e. stopping to correct random words or picking up my fingers and having to just pause because I'm about to butcher a word or something O_O)
No one ever tries to type over a 120 wpm pace unless for a typing test, so even if you can type considerably faster, it takes more effort to regain your "typing test" form than it's worth. Plus the line jump on this test, for w/e reason, bothers me way more than similar tests.
I practiced that shit for two days nonstop and I cannot seem to break 120 ish. Also after just 30 minutes of typing my right pinky finger gets real tired from typing out "people" shit words like that.
I can get 100 at least every time. Average 110's.
Best two results I got was 119 correct, 2 wrong. And 118 correct, 4 wrong.
You reached 488 points, so you achieved position 715 of 532864 on the ranking list
I wish this was an entire page of words that scrolled down as you went. This system where when you reach the last word it starts it again at the top really messes me up. I either type the same word again without realizing it or get lost where I am.
High of 111. Pretty disappointed. It appears I have gone down over the last few years.
107 WPM was the best I could do. Random words flow really oddly and it's easy to get stuck up on a path like 'from for home form' like the one I got a run or two ago. I think I could do 110-120 copying rational text, but the randomness is pretty big for something like this.
511 points, 123 correct 0 wrong, third try - i seem to get 120 words per minute all the time but I made up my own way to touch type where I only use two or three fingers on each hand 90% of the time which is clearly inefficient .
Weird. Looks like the database was wiped or something. There were over a million entries in the ranking list, now there's only 700k?
Edit: I can't fucking take this test, it's ridiculous. Some times I get a dozen ten-letter words in a row, some times a dozen three-letter ones, but worst is whenever the random letters almost make a legitimate sentence, but one of the words is wrong, and I misspell the word they WANT me to input, or I stop and stagger because my brain is rebelling against me typing incorrectly.
This shit is hard since the words are so random it takes me longer to read and type what it actually says (and forcing myself to stop almost typing what normally follows certain words)
Ended up with 69wpm but could prob go a lot faster once i get over the random thing.
I also managed to get 129 WPM and pass the if you can type over 125 WPM test on that type racer link some one posted. That site is fun thanks for posting it.
I got 80 WPM, but the words are so random. It's easier to type when you're actually making the sentence as you go along, like writing this post for example. Just writing something random slows me down alot.
Also English isnt my first language, so i guess that slows me down abit :D
I'm surprised that some people are getting 130+ WPM. I think the average is about 30-40 and the fastest (over a period of time) is 150 wpm.
Professional people that type every single day only reach 100. It's very rare to see people with more than 110.
So why do teamliquid people have so high scores? Are we just that good? I could understand if we're above average, but almost everyone posting is 3-4 times the average speed O.o
well, its only lowercase letters and there are no punctuation or numbers, so that probably makes all the scores a little higher than they would normally be
are you guys backspacing when you make errors? also, i find it really tough sometimes that the words seem to be sentences of broken english, which makes the typing super weird.. i end up mixing the order of words sometimes too.

keep in mind these tests are only a minute long, the record you're referring to (150wpm) was that speed maintained for something like an hour or so. for shorter periods, she could certainly hit 200+, since she peaked at like 212 or so, and these are common words, no punctuation, no numbers, etc so it's really like comparing apples to oranges.
for the 30-40wpm average, i'm 99% certain that includes people that don't use computer that often, and use hunt-and-peck to type their monthly email or whatever. pretty much everyone who uses the computer on a daily basis types at least 50wpm i find, and if i had to guess, a daily-computer-user-average would be around 60-70wpm. someone should do a study on that. of course the reason the TL average is higher is because this site isn't representative of old folks who use their computer once a month to send an email that takes them an hour to type up.
After around 15 mins of playing I got 90 wpm with 1 wrong.
I wonder.. is there anybody else here who ONLY type with their index fingers? I never bothered to learn how to type "properly" and I don't seem to be suffering from it. Let your voices be heard fellow indexbros!

It's weird, first try on these sorts of test I get 115-125ish WPM and then the next one, only 100ish and it stays similar after that >< Guess my fingers get tired fast. I bet it would help if I learned how to type properly. My left hand regular sits on WASD even while typing haha
Pretty funny though, english is apparently by far the easiest to speedtest. Tried the same with dutch and i had trouble breaking 70 on it, Words are way longer on average it seems in the dutch version of the test.
See that people are getting some sick scores though above me, 100+ WPM how do you even do that.
Got about 70 WPM... I feel like I'd be able to do a lot better if it was actual sentences instead of just random words. Something about the way that it's just a chain of random words makes me have to think about it more (which results in me being slower)... I've also noticed that I'm inclined to hit the enter key after each word instead of space.
wow, i looked at the thread title and was already feeling annoyed at not being able to type that fast anymore. but there i am, sitting way up on that last. feels almost exactly like finding 2 quarters on the ground, and there being a vending machine nearby. booya
damn i make so damn many mistakes.. might be because i use laptop type of keyboard but 61 wpm with 6 wrongs and 61 correct and it was danish test. in the english i only got 48.. many longer words ^^
Took me three days to finally beat 120. From all the practice I can get 110+ every single try.
I got soooooo many 119's and 118's it's not even fuckin funny. It really pissed me off that sometimes I'd get 640 chars two times in a row, but the # of words were not even close to the same; something like 119 vs 111.
My best char count was 651. But only gave me 112 words. :'( WTF!
I was having fun on typeracer today and was dominating almost everyone until I ran into someone called "M" 4 times in a row. I got demolished every single time.
Only tried the 10-fast-fingers one once, results in spoiler too. Didn't really like it much because the words really don't flow at all. Normally I'm reading several words ahead since my brain can make out the logical sentences a lot faster than having to look at each individual word, particularly the small ones...
Not an amazing typist by any stretch. And, to be honest, I still type with two fingers + thumbs for the space bar, all hunt-and-peck style. It’s not my fault, though. When I was in middle school, our keyboarding lab had Lunatic Fringe installed on all the computers. Yet another instance where video games cruelly sabotaged my education.
I type a lot faster when it comes to writing out full sentences. I got like 78 on this one but I tend to get 100+ on typeracer, just because I'm able to semi-accurately predict the flow of words.
These random words being thrown at me don't make any sense and so it makes me fumble.
I only get about 85 wpm on this test, mainly because it only gives you about 10 words at a time and and they're not actually sentences, which means you have to focus on each word as you type it, which makes it almost impossible to be both fast and accurate. On other tests where you get a quote, or a logical sentence, and you can read the whole thing as you go, I can get to about 140-150wpm, since I like to be a sentence ahead of what I'm currently typing.
Swedish version is messed up lol, it pretty much had nothing but long words such as "Socialdemokraterna" social democrats in english, but the english version had very few long words like that so i bombed the swedish one with 55 correct 11 wrong, while im stuck on 90 correct 10 - 15 wrong on the english one. I notice the key i most often miss is Y and I.

Yeah, this is exactly right. The context of the words makes a huge difference. Like I hit the word "through" and without a sentence to contextualize it I had to stop and try to think if it was tough, through, though, thought or trough.
I have so much time not making mistakes on this, I can do fine for a while then my dyslexia kicks in slightly and I notice that I'm like 5 words ahead or mixing 3-4 words together. So far my best is 98 WPM.
In each of the three times that I took the test, I got exactly 100 wpm. Of course, the number of mistakes I made varied each time and the points changed as well (only minutely though), it was still fascinating getting the same result three times in a row haha.
I average about 70 words per minute and on this one I remembered to screenshot I speammed on a couple words I messed up lol but there were some longer words than usually typed. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8241673/speedtestphotoproof.PNG
81 words per minute for me. 2 incorrect words. 431 characters per minute.
I must say though, when I try other typing tests in the web, the inclusion of shift characters/capitalization and punctuation really slows me down to mid 50s wpm, with more errors .
Well kinda sucks to do this in english if you got a german keyboard I guess... words with ' reeeeeally slow you down a lot since you can't just hit it with your most right finger (whatever it is called in english^^) but have to hit shift + #, so you got to move your whole right hand to the right. But I'm amazed I'm that "slow" compared to everyone else here. Plus theres sometimes situations you just don't know how a word is written yourself and have to check it. Hate it when "answer" is in there, always mispelling that one, even checking right now if I got it right
In german it's something about 100-110 with at least 2 mistakes less but I don't know which language got more short words in it
Last week when I tried I notice that every time my fastest was around 100-110. Then I made the record of 119.
After a week of rest, and 5 hours of practice, I now can do 115 every single time. It's crazy my understanding went up in typing speed. I can get 640-650 chars/min every time.
Has anyone ever tried switching to Dvorak after learning Qwerty? If so how hard is it for you to switch back and forth between the two? and also how long did it take you to learn the new layout?
91 with retarded finger placement (learned that through too much to in-game typing and coding) on german qwertz layout (mainly just z and y are switched compared to US layout).
meh its frustrating not being able to beat the top score. i slow down a lot when the words wrap too. highest so far was 127 with no errors.. cant seem to get much higher. its definitely my ability to follow the words slowing me down rather than the rate i can type :o
So I'm playing around on typeracer, and see someone with the username Flash (zergrush) typing away. Just wondering who this is. You're quite a fast typist! I'm username Jaedong by the way :D
Felt slow for me. My typing has been getting worse as I get older - though I don't have to type as much as I used to before. Voice chat in every game lowers wpm!
Hey, I have a question for the fastest typists (120+?) out there: do you actually use true, pedantic "touch-typing"? By that I mean using exact fingers for exact keys - like q, a, z - are pressed (only) by the 5th finger of the left hand, w, s, x - (only) ring finger of the right hand, y h n u j m - (only) index finger of the right hand etc.
I'm somewhere around 85-90 WPM. I can type without looking well enough, but I'm not placing the fingers the exact way they should go with touch typing. Wondering if learning proper placements would help.
@grandbrand: no, i mainly just move around my middle three fingers for both hands, going around the place, when i tried learning dvorak before it felt a lot smoother because i was using proper fingers though
You reached 368 points, so you achieved position 36745 of 1530099 on the ranking list
You type 499 characters per minute You have 92 correct words and you have 3 wrong words
Meh not bad.
I always find that these tests seem to judge your ability to read and type at the same time rather than how fast you can actually type something out. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but when I'm typing something out like this post and I already know what I want to say and how the words are going to flow into eachother I can type much faster than when I am trying to read something and type something at the same time. Most of my slow points were in between words as I try to figure out exactly how I need to move my fingers to hit the next keys quickly. Then again it's all relative I suppose, and I'm sure everyone's speed would change if the test was different.
First one was casual at around 84wpm. On second try i realized it's easier if you lower the resolution to make the text size normal. On third try I realized it's faster if you blink as little as possible. On fourth, and final, try I realized that your eyes sting if you don't blink So I stopped .
