OOC, that should be enough to keep you in line. IC, though... well, Amak'thos doesn't learn lessons that easily.

OOC - Wave is impatient, likes exploring things in depth, and has little regard for his own life. That just shines through in Amak'thos =P
Also, with several weeks between sessions, I think Wave forgets about negative consequences.

Especially when one of the casters is LT.

5e gives you the ability to tailor CR Experience levels to the specific party. What it doesn't account for is A) Magic is dope (LTLTLT) and B) half of the characters have +5 bonuses in various stats. I really don't think the system as a whole is prepared for that until WAY later in CRs.

I mean the only thing that feels like it might restrain the party a bit is that their finances seem to be a little bit below-par for a 5E party of their level. But that has way less impact on a caster-heavy party than it would on a normal party, so that's not even a big deal. The only real impact is that LT can't learn infinite spells yet and the casters in general have to steer clear of spells with expensive material components.

Attribute bonuses are actually harder to come by in 5E compared to earlier editions, so those +5s will always be a big deal for encounter balance. It's one of those things (just like how Asmo distributes encounters in relation to short rests) where Asmo's vast pre-5E DMing experience shows because 5E's philosophy towards these things is very different.

I don't really know exactly how DMing works in detail but is it not possible to kinda say 'screw the rules' every so often because you're the DM?

Yup, I do it frequently. Any and all DM rulings trump the base rules if he so desires.
Last night I overtuned an encounter a bit, so I hacked it a bit mid fight as I realized it was too much. Even then they struggled and had to get lucky to survive.
I also have started to employ the Rule of Cool more liberally - if they have something they want to do that will make the story badass and still flow, if they give me good reason it could/should work, then I'll allow it.
Also, my experience DMing probably has made me a more cautious player. I realize that not every encounter is not meant to be fought, nor is a dungeon necessarily filled with a balanced amount of enemies - depending on how it's set up. Your lack of experience in this regard is likely a contributing factor to your cavalier attitude.

I'm assuming you mean 'not every encounter is meant to be fought' in which case I can give you like 3 separate examples of how I have followed that philosophy when it is called for. We haven't exactly had a ton of encounters that toe the line between 'fight' and 'get the hell out' to be fair. It's been pretty obvious when we fight and when we don't as well.

I mean, the CR guidelines are bad and should be ditched at the earliest possible opportunity in every edition--they're just useful in general for the DM to get a bearing on how difficult things are in a system they haven't played before (and Iris was Asmo's first 5E game).
At this point though, Asmo shouldn't be afraid of making "too hard" encounters though, so its w/e.

Let's go with yes.
My internet may be spotty, but it's decent enough now to try.
In other news, I'm thinking it might be time for a new router.

Potentially running a little late
Like, a handful of minutes. Maybe. Setting up my aunt's computer

Tons of fun tonight after an actually DIFFICULT encounter! Hopefully more of that to come (right Magnus?).
Sorry about the shitty quality tonight. Clearly I'm going to have to see what I can do with my ISP. I put what I could salvage up, but if anyone DOES watch the VoDs, me aculpa on that quality.
Also, I finally updated the Worldbuilding library to include all my recent blog posts in one easy location for all the Iris goodies. Enjoy!

Time for me to reclaim my crown as the reigning shitlord. I will be here this coming week but the following Tuesday is surgery again. In theory I could be on for the following week.
Let's make next week super fucking awesome, k?

Sounds good to me.
Hope things go easily and well, but we'll have a good session next week either way.
