I also fully expected you guys to talk about the wooden staff for at least a couple minutes and I was only slightly disappointed.

I'm pretty sure we would have if we knew there was going to be a session afterwards, but it had all the signs of wrapping up and with a delayed start it... yeah.

On another forum I post at I started a thread to get some people interested in a 5e Eberron game (with a few adjustments) but only have 2-3 submissions. Since I want to get that going and since I am finding that the prep is a bit too high to both DM and play. I will be dropping out of the running for iris and will pick up a few of you who aren't in(if you're willing to play). I will still be there for the end of the one shot, no worries there, but def won't be playing. If people are interested I will post the details of what I need for sheets/what I expect of players, and what rule changes I will be making. I know I probably come off a bit harsh in this thread and will when you see my edits and read. But all-in all they're pretty simple and easy to deal with and really keep things moving. I find this very important as I usually end up doing about 2 hours of prep* for every 1 hour of session and like to get my times worth essentialy. If people aren't interested then i will stick around here and give asmo advise on how to tpk you in the guise of "making things interesting" *between encounter design and setting up roll20 stuff it's a decent assumption. More for certain travel sections; less for dungeons proper (first session is overland travel for thematic introduction purposes and so I've got roughly 16 encounters prepped for seeing an expected 4 to 6 of them)

*escalation die is a mechanic where the players gain "round-1" to attack and damage(and save dcs iirc) until round 7. The idea is that it provides almost nothing in the early parts of a fight when fights are the most dangerous but speeds up the end of the combat round so you aren't bored with "hero Orc 12" that Jesus christ you just can't hit doesn't become an annoyance. Edit: I don't think that, if you played in one of my games you would have that feeling but I understand it on the outside looking in. After asmo picks I will post my thematic info.

*this might just be a side effect of playing a lot of third Ed. The encounter rules and monsters in third Ed made single monster fights about the only thing you could do because lower leveled monsters would just be sacks of HP with not enough attack or def to be a threat but multiple even level monsters could easily wipe a party. This forced DMs to either heavily edit monsters or use only a handful at a time at most. 4th ed fixed this with minions (which I will probably eventually use) and 5th attempts to fix this by removing scaling stats which works OK but generally low level enemies still don't do enough damage and using lots of monsters becomes a record keeping nightmare so it's better to just use minion mechanics. **for instance a hydra might be three individual heads all acting as a different monster with a semi-shared HP pool with the body. This way the players have to balance init and think about flanking even if it's "just one monster". Makes the combat feel different compared to fighting a single troll or something. but what if all but one member of each side died? More or less; i am ok with players winning a fight that would otherwise come down to die rolls, rather than being wiped My goal as a DM is not to kill players, its to provide an interesting an engaging narrative that players want to take part in and then to provide encounters which further that narrative and keep players involved. At the end of the day I am more worried about encounters feeling dangerous than encounters being dangerous. Balance changes are there mainly to ensure that everyone can feel useful in whatever role they want to play, while increasing the variety of encounters that I can throw at players without wiping them not because the system has some necessary balance where players are competing with each other (or in combat against each other) but because keeping the encounters varied and players involved means that people have more fun.

Idk, Gurubashi Berserker was cake =P I think it's just that low level 5e encounters are swingy and tough to balance. Either your team of 4 TPKs to 3 goblins (has happened to me), or you just stomp through things, making it feel a bit lame at times.
