I am assuming colossus slayer at level 3. Since you can't get the feat until level 4 it makes sense to use it. Now that I am not on my phone You might also have hunters mark (1d6/attack against single creature so long as you focus it) but only 2 fights/day roughly and it would eat your entire spellcasting selection and you would also risk breaking concentration So at level 5 when you get two attacks you have a few situations to look at Marked: Vs enemy at full HP or already used colossus slayer 1d8+4 + 1d6 (12 avg) 22/12 = 1.83 = more damage on this attack if your roll required to-hit is less than or equal to 11, precisely equal at 10 vs less than full HP 2d8+4 + 1d6 (16.5 avg) 26.5/16.5 = 1.606 = more damage on this attack if your roll required to-hit is less than or equal to 7 non Marked: vs full HP or already used colossus slayer 1d8+4(8.5 avg) 18.5/8.5 = 2.1 = more damage on this attack if your roll required to-hit is less than or equal to 11 vs less than full HP 2d8+4(13 avg) 23/13 = 1.796 = more damage on this attack if your roll required to hit-is less than or equal to 9 The is some wiggle room if you're attacking a target which has full HP with your first attack since hitting the attack will give you the chance to hit for another 1d8 on the next attack. But its pretty small, a 1 to-hit difference. If you have advantage it gets a bit more complicated but you will almost always make the cut, ditto disadvantage. Lets examine what the AC of a common EL 2-5 monster might be using orcs as an example. Orcs range from EL 1/2 to 4. And in AC from 13 to 18 (13,16,18,16 by EL 1/2,2,2,4) At level 5 a ranger with ranged fighting stance and 18 dex will have +9 to attack. Which means he needs a to-hit of 4 to hit the 13 AC and a 9 to hit the AC 18. Which means that in almost all situations you do more DPA by power attacking against orcs. At level 2 you will have an attack of +8 which means that you need a to-hit of 5 to hit the 13 AC and a 10 to hit the 18 AC (which is higher than almost all other comparable creatures) which again means power attacking against orcs is almost always the right call if you don't have your bonus damage ready/up. A quick survey of monsters reveals that there are about 7 monsters with AC 20 (of varying types), and 12 with AC 19.(not including adult/ancient dragons). No monster with an EL 20 or under has an AC above 20. I feel like these are so far off/not going to be used that its not worth caring about releasing meta information(if you do Asmo, sorry) The complete list of monsters with AC>20 is AC 25: (EL) Tarrasque(30) AC 22: (EL) Empyrean(23) Some Ancient Dragons(El 21-24) 21: Solar(21) Some Ancient Dragons(EL 21-24) Some Ancient Dragons have AC of 20. While there are some low EL monsters with high AC (up to 20) they should be pretty obvious and so easy to discern when you should/shouldn't attack. And with increasing proficiency bonuses to attack (and the totally OP +2 attack for archery style) you will not have any problem power attacking your way through the game, even applying the bonus damage from colossus slayer and the hunters mark spell (and once you start using volley/swift quiver this entirely goes away). Also if you select Horde Breaker then the bonus damage gets a lot better faster (Horde breaker is super good with Volley and/or clumped enemies) edit: No more 's

I know its easily that way for the fighter if they pick one of the more expensive martial weapons.

I feel spoiled knowing the AC of monsters tho so no more of that pls ugh i have so much more reading to do to figure out what my character wants to be. For the most part you can determine a monsters AC based on how they look. IE reasonable in game meta information. Things made of stone/iron have higher AC, things with shields have higher still, things with plate have higher. Combine them all for really high AC's. All you really need to know is that if they're wearing plate they have 18 AC, if they're wearing plate and have a shield they have 20. Just like you would if you were in plate with a shield. If they aren't they might have natural armor. But again, never all that much. That wizard in the back line? Well. i got an extra 14.56 more GP from rolling on the lower side of average and ditching the starting options i didnt want/need. but then i bought a pan flute lol. I couldn't get the scalemail option if i wanted it tho. Did you drop both the class and background options? Because i think you're supposed to do that.
