Think Kingsroad from GoT, but way longer. Continent longer. It has plenty of offshoots to get to various other places in the world (which is part of what it was designed for), but it also serves as a massive thoroughfare between those massive cities. @PX - In some places, yes, but where they were last night it's much more packed dirt. Not all of the Everroad is in good repair. On January 01 2015 01:41 WaveofShadow wrote: lol not only do we not have a tank, but we have two CN in our party. A Fighter is LIKE a tank.

Well there aren't any real tanks in 5e because they nixed the mark mechanic(which was super dumb) so any smart creature will just nuke the squishes and only diliberately denying enemies world knowledge (like that people in armor are hard to hit and people in cloth easy*, or that wizards should have low dex or con saves) will reasonably save you. But I should do a decent enough job. My AC is 16, which is high enough to be decently hard to hit but not so high (I could get to 19 if I had wanted) that enemies would avoid me all together. Additionally fighters get 1d10+level healing every short rest. Which averages about half my HP. But still the name of the game in 5e is "don't get hit" *ironically this makes shields potentially worse for tanking unless you take the active defense options since enemies will smartly just ignore you if they are not so dumb to realize that shields = higher AC.

Keep in mind that a loooooooot of enemies have shit for brains. Big bad Hydra? Not even 4 intelligence.

thats kind of silly. someone who has a commander is likely to use tactics, but certainly no animal or man acting on their own will ignore someone swinging a sword at them for any reason. if a panther pounces on a halfling in the back row and a half orc comes and knocks it off of the little guy, the panther is either going to run away or try to fight back vs the half orc its not going to be like, yeah that didnt mean anything im going for the halfling still, as its being stabbed by a sword over and over. things like illthids are likely to go for the "tanks" first anyway because they are easy targets to become thralls. and they are far more intelligent than any person playing the game. dragons are likely to not care until the fight becomes threatening to them, as dragons can't immediately see the power of a person barring a few, and as a whole dragons view themselves as incredibly far above mortal races. pretty much there is no circumstance outside of magic or enemies with a commander or tactician that would deliberately ignore a threat in order to fight a back row

Are you going to ignore the guy with the sword to take out the guy with the machine gun? Well shit yea of course you are. So why do you suggest that creatures that otherwise live in that world, informed by the fact that magic is relatively common and that wizards exist and will shoot fire at them are somehow going to forget that conveniently so that your mates don't have to take as much damage

You're telling me that bandits or other intelligent creatures who more or less kill for a living don't know this?

don't forget. in 5th edition, a guy in robes in the back could be a wizard, could be a monk, or could even be a barbarian, or just a nobleman or commoner, which would be stupid to go after first in combat since they are absolutely not a threat. there is also you know, the lack of knowlege of game mechanics of ANY character in the game. common sense tells me if i slash this guy with a dagger he'll bleed and probably die pretty soon it doesnt matter what armor he has on, if he gets cut deep he'll probably die. a lvl 5 fighter probably won't but higher level PC classes are pretty rare and people dont think oh, this guy must be high level 'in character.' they think, okay this guy is a warrior like me, i am evenly matched. until you see the guy fight and you get overwhelmed by his skill. there is a reason throughout history that soldiers don't run past the men at arms and knights to go try to get at the archers on the hill. and its not because archers aren't a threat.
