Great night tonight! It was fun to have some viewers, but more fun to put ya'll's skills to the test. Your rest is well-deserved, if not potentially undisturbed. :D

![]() Really pumped for this next dungeon (especially after some of the weird shit in the well) - curious to see if Roger learns anything more about the connection between my necklace and what's going on, and interested in where the necklace takes me next.

Here's the start to a class I'm designing for 5e. Let me know what you think of the Witch.

Let me know what you think of the Witch. Skimming: So it's a Sorcerer with better spell-list, and warlock invocation-spell things? Devastating: When a spell calls for you to roll die for damage, you may add additional die of the same type (d4, d6, etc.) up to your Intelligence modifier to the roll. Assuming this means.... 1 die total? or can you have 20 INT at level 1 and roll 6d4+1 vs each target for magic missile because it doesn't specify to a single target for multi target spells? Might be a wording issue because die = 1 thing, dice = multiple things. As written. it's by far the best spellcaster in the game, even before going into the lvl 3 specializations. no other class has as many bonuses AND spells before the specialization, even if it's once/rest it's still like i can cast a magic missile spell once per day that auto kills any enemy or any group of enemies i want. Seems real strong for a level 1 ability. that's the kind of stuff a level 7 or 9 character gets from a specialization. And usually non-spellcasting classes. The spells tend to be the big draw for spellcasters. the class itself tends not to do very much. Sorcerers get the most, but have the worst spell list, and they get: a couple AC, resistance to a damage type (kinda) and slight bonus damage to one element, and then metamagic, which is all okay-ish. and thats through 14 levels. Each of the curses/enhanced rituals/spirit things are so strong i thought they were the specializations. but you get all 3 and then stuff on top. O_O

The intent is for this to be a lot of minor control with some HIGH BURST moments, especially if you prepare well. So yeah seems like I already need to focus on those moments more (as opposed to all the time).

In fact, despite the fact the ostensible flavor connection between witches and rituals, the class has starkly little connection to ritual casting in general, but rather has a comparatively large emphasis on on-the-spot abilities. The gameplay doesn't match the flavor. In my mind the Witch ability list would have much greater emphasis on rituals and out-of-combat spells and would be a relatively poor direct combatant compared to the Wizard or the Sorcerer. Might be a wording issue because die = 1 thing, dice = multiple things. Warmage in 3rd Ed. has a similar ability that was errata-ed to "only affects 1 target for multi-target spells" because spells like MM become silly. EDIT: Also, I'm just going to say that having a permanent, free Sonorous Hum at level 2 is just outright too powerful for 5th Edition. Split Focus just has to go entirely. Concentration-duration is a balance tool for spells that sees a lot more use in 5E, and being able to maintain a second Concentration spell was already powerful in 3rd Edition as a one-spell-per-cast 3rd level spell. There's just no way that you can balance making that essentially an at-will ability at level 2. The spirit effects in general are equivalent in power to 3rd Edition metamagic feats, which required increasing the effective level of the spell they applied to be balanced. Getting access to all of them immediately with no drawback is insane. Additionally, as a rule anything that duplicates spells needs to specify how it handles material components, both thematically and within the rules.

Your point about Concentration is taken Yango. That should go. It just seemed so cool. :D

As an X-times-per-rest (short or long) ability available at higher level, it could be fair. It basically exists as a powerful-but-not-broken 3rd level spell in 3.5E, which should give you a benchmark for where to tune it as a class ability in 5E. In general all the Spirit abilities need to have a cost associated with them because they're too powerful to be "free".

It is only possible 2x per LR as it is now (increasing at higher levels) if that wasn't clear from the document, but even so it's still probably too low of a level. Edit: It's becoming clear that I did not correctly communicate those spirit abilities because my intent was that you got 2/LR for the first 5 levels, then 3, 4, etc. as shown on the class chart (well... at higher levels a class chart would show that).
