After watching Dreamhack Valencia and checking Liquipedia afterwards, what I've feared did come true - "The Dong" is an widely accepted Nickname of Jaedong. What I couldnt find is which caster gave him the nickname or who is responsible for its grown use.
I searched the forum without a answer to this and - shame on me - I refused to google "origion of The Dong" etc. ... please forgive me dear mods but I think you understand.
Many progamers have interesting IDs, yet Jaedong stands out by choosing his own name as ID (even though he uses his initial). Force a nickname upon someone/ belittle their name is in many cultiures considered as disrespectfull, unless you related to that person by family bounds/friendship or something around those lines. In sports or competitive scenes in general this isnt the case. Players/athletes get nicknames that often highlight a certain skill/move/attribute or achievement of the player/athlete and are taken as some sort of compliment in general.
Now back to "the Dong". I dont see how the stated uses of nicknames in competitive scenes applys to "the Dong" - Jaedong is no pornstar even some of you wish so. This reminds me of a case regarding aglicisms I discussed with my students where the "Jugendamt der Diözese Speyer" (yound wellfare office of the diocese of Speyer) translated the "ökumenische Christfest 2000" to "The Great Ding Dong" and got mocked for it.
To get to my point: "The Dong" might be the single worst nickname for a SC2-player that exists (ang gets used by casters) and I want to know who came up with it. I am also interested how this name sounds to you native english people.
Note: Origin of the name is the thing I am most interested. - who came up with it
EDIT: Gunther - Ding Dong Song. Just search it on youtube if you dont know about this "masterpiece"... credits go to onPHYRE for bringing up this piece of long repressed memory.
It's a stupid nickname that belittles jaedong when used with anything less than 110% irony. It should not be used in major event casts. It's entirely tasteless, and even he would hesitate to say it.

It has nothing to do with you, it's silly to be afraid of that.
In case you didn't know, sometimes names are shortened and turned into nicknames. It's neither offensive or degrading, and it's certainly nothing to fear.
Edit: And considering it's his name, and that fact that you sound like a fan (although deeply misguided), I wouldn't suggest telling him that his name sounds awful.
One of the many things that makes SC2 casters unprofessional is their penchant for blurting out stuff from forums. "The Dong" is a very old nickname for Jaedong that people use on this forum. It's a dumb penis joke made up by kids. That's really all there is to it. You must not have been around when DRG was big and people were arguing over who the "one true dong" was.

Is this thread serious? His name is Lee Jae Dong, his ID is Jaedong, Dong is a funny euphemism for dick. It's just a joke, really shouldn't require an explanation..

I am around since a long time just not registered/lurking the forums that much. So it is a community thing and not the horrible work of a caster? Good to know.

I am sorry that I might confused you. This thread is serious. The origin of the word is clear, I wanted to know who is responsible for coming up with this name.

Whoever came up with it, it probably predates the casting careers of any of the casters who worked at Valencia.
"the dong" originated from his own name, jae-'dong.' it was an ongoing nick name in broodwar, mostly started from fans that didn't like their top player getting beaten out of nowhere, the legend-killer, jaedong. It was initially used as a mockery because this was the beginning of jaedong's popularitiy, but soon became a name that meant to be 'manly' or 'ballsy.' It was also a name that most casters avoided saying in korea because it wasn't the most respectable name. I don't think I ever heard tastetosis say that. The name really just remained in the teamliquid community but I think when jaedong started to go to foreign events, "the dong" really started to catch on in casting. I believe apollo used 'the dong' the most and from there, casters have been using that term. I only remember apollo using it I think.

tbh the fact that you are in such agony over this makes it really funny.
Just to make it clear: I am not highly upset about it, in the end I dont care that much. I just find the name odd/inappropriate and was curious who came up with it and how it is received upon the community.
I think of the sound of a bell when I hear about dong, and then about chinese last names. Even google search "origin of dong" for me reveals the first link being "The sound of a bell" followed by "Chinese Surname".

Ok from now JYP is "the Pee". That's really funny, right? People can say things like "Flash is gonna be choking on Pee tonight" or "Woongjin got Pee'd on".

Still better for flash then replacing "pee" with "dong" ;-)

Doesn't make as much sense because nearly anybody can be "P" while there can only be one Dong. Part of it is the uniqueness of the syllable. The only alternative is DRG, but the Dong nickname never stuck with him

Sure is jumping through mental hoops furiously around here.

Probably not Artosis though. It probably predated most of the production crew or eSports personalities though.

And "The Dong" sure sounds better than JD? For a korean maybe, but DH valencia wasnt a korean event.
Of course, a German would say that. But, this is an international forum so we shouldn't have conform to your definitions of what the world should be like, much as you wish that were the case.
...
Ridiculous statement right? Right. There's so much wrong with it, but it echoes your sentiments. Your post there is slightly ethnocentric even though it strives not to be.
The difference between "The Dong" and the case you cited with "The Great Ding Dong" is that this just happens to be short form for the guy's name, there's no translation mistake or simplification of one's language.
Anyways, to answer your question, while the community started it I believe Apollo was the first mainstream English caster to use it.
To my first point though, don't act like yours is the only valid opinion on this. I get what you're getting at, you're entitled to your opinion and we are to ours. Now, if JAEDONG himself was offended by the nickname, that'd be a COMPLETELY different story.
That's not the case though, because if it were people wouldn't call him that.
It's completely OK to call him Dong in Korea and in China, if you are his close friend or family members.
His name is not Lee Jaedong. His name is Lee Jae Dong
Lee Jae Dong 이 제 동 李 帝 東
Korean and Chinese given name are two completely separated characters. The two characters are not connected in any way. Only in latinization, Korean and Chinese connect the two characters of their given name together to make it easier to understand for Westerns.
But well I guess this is a different topic from what Westerns call him the DONG, which is only a joke to me, chill
There are many Dongs in the world. Some of them are less Dongs, some pale in comparison, and some appear larger than life. It is a testament to Jaedong's massive prowess that he has been recognized as The Dong, one who is greater than all other Dongs.

Except JYP's last name isn't actually "P," it's Park. They don't call Jaedong "The Dee." It wouldn't be Woongjin got Pee'd on, it'd be Woongjin got parked, which I guess implies rape.

It's fine shortening his ID into a nickname, but casters making euphemism-based jokes about "Dong" during a cast just makes me cringe.
That kind of thing lowers the level of professionalism SC2 is trying to present.
Edit: I'd say there's definitely a place for humor in a cast, but the line between (what can be interpreted as) crude and lighthearted sometimes becomes blurred. I'd rather casters try to avoid the crude region, to allow for greater appeal to new viewers and sponsors alike.
I remember how Apollo made this infamous in his cast of JD's games. "Here comes big daddy dong". "The dong has arrived". "The dong has penetrated the third..." LOL

Apollo called him Big Daddy Dong in a major event cast.

"Do you guys want the D!"
"WE WANT THE D!"
I want this to happen at a major event.
That takes the entire point of the joke away though. The joke is simple, and it got bigger once blizz had him change his ID to JD because it wouldn't allow "dong" due to the name issue. At least we don't have all the "raise your dongers" stuff going on with his name lol. Honeslty this thread is making a bigger deal of this than it is, there are tons of jokes like this in other sports too, e-sports doesn't have to be incredibly stiff like a formal high-tea.
On July 21 2013 09:33 waffelz wrote: Many progamers have interesting IDs, yet Jaedong stands out by choosing his own name as ID (even though he uses his initial).
JaeDong doesn't intentionally use JD as his ID. Maybe somebody already said it but JaeDong is an "illegal" name, as Dong has been deemed to be offensive and thus banned the name from being used.
It's absolutely ridiculous telling one of the most famous people in the world that they can't use their own name because their name means penis.
Can you believe someone telling you that? "Sorry dawg, even though its your real name, we use it as slang for penis, so you're going to have to find a new name"
I think(?) it was the first SPL cast with TotalBiscuit where he was talking about how JD couldn't make his ID "JaeDong" because "Dong" was a banned word, so he tried to say/emphasize the "Dong" part of his name during the cast.
"Dong" is very close to the korean word for shit, I found myself lol'ing pretty hard when I kept hearing apollo say "THE DONG", "BIG DADDY DONG" very enthusiastically obviously not knowing the similarities between the words.
The only difference is the D sound is slightly stronger and can be written as "ddong" in english or in korean "똥" instead of "동".

Except the "o" vowel sound is completely different ._. Jaedong is dong like "dog" 똥 is "dohng" like "oh.."
Somehow I never really thought of "The Dong" as a penis reference. I feel like when people used to say his name they'd emphasize that part of it, mostly just because it sounded cool or authoritative.
