it is a once in a lifetime event. isn't there something intriguing about being in the thick of it? seeing the eye wall in person?

staying it out inside a totally waterproof bunker sounds kinda fun. worrying about whether the house you are inside is about to collapse on you sounds terrible.

given the scale of the hurricane and the amount of cloud cover you don't see that much anyways. it's just weather getting progressively worse over a few hours to a day.

only once in a lifetime if it kills you. and since that's the risk, i'll always pass.

From what I understand Irma has been pulling west a lot, Tampa was outside the danger zone a day ago and now its to late to get out anyway, no gas and the highways are a parking lot so you seriously risked being without shelter at all if you left when it became more dangerous.

It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

I'd wager it's much less romantic than it sounds. Especially in a bunker, ew.

And it doesn't sound very much fun to begin with ... More like sudden terror.

Even then, whatever thrill you get from being there when it happens is not worth the shit of being there when it's all over.

Piecing my life together is something I'd prefer to do from the safety and comfort of a friend or loved one's home, not knee-deep in water and mud.

Somehow the prospect of being surrounded by hurricane-strength winds and torrential rainfall does not sound like a particularly fascinating life event. It just sounds like a giant inconvenience. If you want a nice point of reference, just be in the middle of any old storm and think of it like that except with more structural damage.

i assume you are there / took first flight there to not miss this lifetime event?

If it only turns out to be an inconvenience, count yourself lucky.

Since the prediction is stronger storms due to hotter air and thus more energy for storms. Why would his original statement be wrong? It seems to me that there is a decent chance another one hits in the next 2-3 decades.

So I remembered something I thought worth mentioning. As often happens, I got a ballot for one of the many local elections that came around. Nothing special, just a few local city positions. But as I usually do, I looked up all the candidates. The Democrats actually seemed like pretty solid fellas, and they did get my vote. Mailed it in and then just watched.

What struck me was how universally bad the Democrats were at campaigning. Here they had some high quality progressive candidates for the picking but they put in no effort in getting them elected. The Republican candidates had a strong mailing campaign, calls and personal visits from the candidates in question, and very prominent, poignant ads. The Democrats had... flimsy template websites if any at all, a few awkwardly placed road signs, and pretty much nothing else.

The result was a clean sweep by Republicans. Sad thing is the Democrats didn't even do so badly, they just all individually lost. Given similar success rates across the country I suspect that there is a systemic campaigning ineptitude on the part of Democrats that makes this keep happening. Many winnable elections were lost to awful campaigning. Over and over again.

Democrats decided that they would rather lose to Republicans than back candidates that are "too progressive" Like the healthcare vote and others, they are celebrating losing under the illusion that it makes them look better.

Also they are hurting for money and so most of the money will only be funneled to candidates who are paying off the consultant class. The special elections earlier were a statement on that from the party.

Hey, I've been lurking this thread for a long time and never really wanted to get into the ideological arguments that are constantly going on here, but as a floridian that's been through 4 direct category 3+ eyewall hits and a smattering of other hurricanes, I figure I should weigh in.

From a personal perspective, as long as you take proper precautions hurricanes generally aren't really dangerous here. The building codes are very hurricane resistant, so there's little direct damage, and the entire state sits on a giant aquifer and a network of canals (that were built to literally drain the swamp), so we're pretty good at resisting the flooding effects. The news is pretty good at emphasizing the risks (which they should, if you downplay the storm people do more dumb stuff which causes a lot more death) and finding the worst areas to show off, which makes the whole thing look way worse than it is. As long as you're in a well-constructed building (people in old homes or trailer parks need to seek shelter), have your windows all shuttered off, and have your car in a safe place, you're generally pretty okay to ride out the storm. The most property damage I've been through is losing 3 shingles after a category 4.

HOWEVER, category 5 hurricanes are a different beast. These are pushing the limits of what our building codes were made to handle, and tend to be much more dangerous. If I still lived in a coastal area (up in orlando now) and I was taking a direct hit from Irma I would evacuate. It's still very unlikely that your building gets destroyed, but that risk is there.

"Inconvenience" is a bit of an undersell of the destructiveness of the storm though. Utilities and roads get rocked, so you need to be prepped to last quite a while without modern comforts. I've been out of power as long as two and a half weeks before, and without water for a week and a half. People that have medical emergencies during or shortly after the storm can't get care. Cell phone towers go down so you can't call all the people worried about you and tell them you're okay.

P.S. It IS rather neat standing in the eye of a hurricane, there's something surreal about standing in a zone of perfect calm tranquility after hours of torrential assault on your house. If you ever have the misfortune of taking a direct hit from a hurricane, make sure you go outside during the eye

Couldn't you also say this about Democrats that thought the candidates "weren't progressive enough"?

The overwhelming majority of progressives will hold there nose and vote establishment.
