Most people new to the Dota 2 scene are interested in playing but complain that they cannot get a key. What they don't know is that they can get a beta key for this game for about £1.59 from someone that already has the game. Of course there are other ways of getting keys but this is quite quick and simple, and £1.59 isn't that much anyway.
Dota2 has a system where players receive random drops at the end of each game that customise the look of their heroes. Sometimes players receive chests as well, which contain rare items such as custom couriers or unusual items. These chests require a key to unlock them, and while the chest is free, the key is not, and has to be purchased from the in-game store.

The important thing here is that people generally trade a single Dota 2 invite for 1 of these keys. Each of these keys costs £1.59.
The basic steps are the following:
- You need to have a Steam account, which you can sign up for here.
- Go to the Dota 2 shop and purchase 1 of these keys. They may look different from the key in the picture above, but they will be called and look something similar.
- Go to a popular trading site such as Reddit's trade section and post the following: [H] 1 chest keys [W] Dota 2 invite
- Once someone posts their Steam username, add them as a friend and request a trade with them
- Trade your key for an invite, use the invite for yourself
- Download the game client and play!

note: Trades used to be 3 keys for 1 invite and thus this used to cost £4.77. However with the new invite explosion they are now worth a lot less and are much cheaper.

Should probably add that there are lots of people who offer "non-tradable beta invites" which is basically reliant on you trading them the keys and them giving you the beta code (?) out there, especially on reddit. You can do trades like that via messaging a moderator who interacts as middleman, would be really careful with any other method.
PS: For the rest of the EU £4.77 equal 5.97€. Maybe add that and the $ price for 3 keys to the OP.

On the reddit page there's also links to useful tools to check steam ID's if they have ever been reported for scamming.
I've gotten som key's for friends via r/dota2trade tho. Really nice way to get a key

Yep, just did this, pretty quick and easy once I figured out I bought Steam credit to buy keys instead of just buying the keys (derp? why'd I do that?)

worth noting if you don't already have steam you wont be able to trade for 30 days. found out after i initiated a trade and kinda screwed the other guy over.
edit- or if you havent bought anything on steam in more than a year.

If it's a tradable key it's an item similar to those free HL2 copies or random DotA / TF items. Click the rectangle next to a person -> invite to trade. Both parties drag their items into it and confirm once they're okay with the deal.

Keep in mind that if too many people start wanting to do this kind of trade, the price might go up a bit. Especially after the international.

I bought 4 treasure keys to trade but once i bought them they say non-tradeable, even though it says they can be traded.
Then i go to the steam trade FAQ and it says that I have to wait 30 days?! What is up with this. I just bought CS:GO a little while ago and Shogun Total War before that...why do I have to wait? Anyone know what's going on or what I have to do?

No, people only get Dota 2 invites as random items at the end of games etc, which they then trade away for X amount of keys (usually 3 or 4 now)

Thats why I got them for people who didnt. Its just a suggestion for people who'd like to get their friends keys if they have items lying around. Although to be fair most people already probably know that.

This is probably one of the safest and fastest ways of getting a key if you are looking for a cheaper alternative thanks for the post.

Indeed, when you could have gained a grand fortune of like 5$ =p As has already been mentioned seems like there was a pretty big wave of keys being sent out a day or two ago so expect prices for beta invites to drop a decent amount, at least for a while.

Invites have been at 4 keys the last 2-3 weeks before the latest invite wave, it's basic supply and demand. Now they're at 1.5-2, the market adjusts itself.

there is no separation. you can freely choose the server you wanna play on.
its just one client and the steam network is global.
blizzard should take a closer look at this system^^

They have to receive an additional dota invite in their steam inventory. This was quite random, but a few days ago we had an invite wave where everyone with an account was given an additional key to give out.

Currently, Dota 2 is still technically in a "closed beta." That means to get invites, you would normally need to sign up (http://blog.dota2.com/) for a beta invite. If you do get the invite, then obviously it's free to play, but it'll probably take a while. If you want in fast, there are also dota 2 beta keys floating around (whether it be as a gift from valve for keys gotten at events, etc), and often times people are willing to trade these beta keys for treasure chest keys that open chests in-game. These chest keys can be bought for $2 or something and most people will ask for 2-3 chest keys in return for trading over the invite. That's what this thread is for.
Straight up buying into the game costs $40.

Yes, 40$ gets you one from Valve and 2 extras right away.
I believe the point synapse is making is that if you invest like 5 more minutes you can save yourself ~35$. By purchasing Treasure Keys ($2.50 each) from the dota2 store and trading them to other people. I bolded the part you seemed to be missing.

I think it's supposed to give you 1 extra. Either way it is much cheaper to find a trader.

Just a bump to mention that with the recent invite waves that are going on, invites are generally going for as low as 1 or 2 keys, making them even cheaper.

The standard one sells for £9.99 on the Dota 2 store. I don't know about how many keys it is worth.
The golden one varies, last I heard someone sold one for $1000.

While I understand the reason you've written this, but for someone who has been for over 2 years on TL you have contributed - pardon the term - jackshit. The point of the 100 post requirement is not just about time being around - it's about contributing to the community and actually being part of it.
So if you've been visiting TL for so long, why not post? Just be a part of the community instead of a watcher

Does anyone here still have an extra invite? I'm mostly a RTS player and lover of sc2, but after seeing more dota2 on the main page made me want to try it out. I would gladly trade a chest key or that other chest key, maybe I can even throw in a Starbucks gift card to get your caffeine fix.  Thanks!

I think that right now it's a lot easier to get hold of Dota invites than a HotS invite. I don't think 4 for 1 is enough.
Considering that this is not even a standard trade (HotS is Blizzard, Dota is Valve) and I'm not really sure which direction to point you in to try and make this trade happen.
PS the edit button exists for a reason!
