A hacker who decided enough was enough, when LulzSec DDoS'ed the CIA website, of all things, recently. His first tweet to them was a challenge:
@lulzsec - re: your last hit. Gloves off. Expect me. My silence is not an indication of weakness, as your mouth is an indication of yours.
What happened since then?
This hacker, we shall refer to him as "The Jester", first started a campaign against a fake twitter account impersonating as him, @real_j35t3r. After a series of elaborate email scams to fool him, by acting as a reporter interested in interviewing "The Jester", his operation came to a remarkable conclusion:
actually totally INVOICED our trusty ‘Aneka’ via PAYPAL – his own paypal account! Not once, not twice but 3 times!
Awesome skillz Sonny.
This is just the first, there were 2 more, another for $10,000 and another for $3500 – that’s $23,500 our faker was hoping to make from pretending to be me – wow, and here is me making absolutely nothing day in day out.
Out of respect, for @real_j35t3r‘s clear mental disposition I have not included this loser’s full name or email address – he has clear and present issues. And I wish him all the best in getting that sorted out.
However, Casey, you just got PWNED and in the worst possible way, I didn’t even have to get all geek on you, you fell for a LOW-FI social engineering hit, and you claim to be all that too. You are a failure.
And just so you know I got you:
Here are 4 things I know about you (just 4 outta 5000).
1). You are moving to Florida in August, lets hope your new employer doesn’t realise what a cock you are?
2). You are 22 years old, way out of your depth, a self-proclaimed member of Anonymous (although that’s not why this has happened) and you graduated from Berkeley – Cognitive/Computer Science with a minor in Political Science.
3). You get your hair fixed at STUD CUTS, and ‘K’ is your favorite girl there.
4). YOU JUST GOT PWNED, BOY.
So here’s the conclusion:
I know your twitter names, I know the names you use on IRC, I know your real Identity and I know your MO – and if you ever darken my door again, I wont be so accommodating towards you. Go away. Everyone thinks you are a prick, except for the unfortunate people that think you are me. But now that’s over too.
Ps: Format your PC. Start Again. Or don’t, all the better for me.
And if you are still unsure?
‘ANEKA’ has one last thing to say. Right here.
Peace out.
J.
PS: Just exercising my right to ‘Freedom of speech’ blah blah blah
UPDATE 04/10/2011:
As you can see this dude was pretty much pwned , and I stress, in the worst possible way, a way that played to ego, and his willingness to make $23K under false pretences.
Since this post was originally posted, there have been a couple of developments, and for your perusal, I will keep you in the loop on those developments starting here:
1). The @real_jester twitter account has never tried to delve into personal relationships with others, as it was setup purely to troll the shit out of me. However, only hours after this blog post was published, the account suddenly decided to engage two random NYC residents – in an attempt to convince the folks of twitter that he lives in NYC – however he lives in Carlsbad, CA.
I was gonna do another screen grab – but he obviously deleted those tweets, as I dont see them now, my bad. However the upshot is he attempted to speak to to NYC randoms asking if they were gonna ‘crash his crib’ lol – hoping but failing – to divert attention.
2). And this is the important one. (and I have a grab this time.)
@real_jester decided to have a conversation with himself, in order to make it appear as if I had the wrong person fingered.
How so?
Its fairly pathetic, and totally transparent. But please note in my above post - I never posted his full name or email, and blurred his photo, out of respect for his apparent mental health issues.
BUT NEVERTHELESS THE DUMB ASS FOOL MANAGED TO SEAL IT – AND PWN HIMSELF!
here is the grab:
So how did he PWN himself?
Again I stress – I NEVER GAVE UP HIS TOTALLY IDENTIFYING INFO
HE PANICKED AND RAGE-PWND HIS OWN ASS
In a rage-fit – this troll, knowing he was rumbled, decided to try and call bluff, except it wasn’t a bluff, he was owned already, only he knew it tho, but he believed everyone knew it. And so posted his entire details in an attempt to bluff.
What’s the chances of a complete n00b like this getting the ID right unless it was actually him? Also please note the facebook page attached to @gardinerca twitter profile.
Furthermore:
Regular readers of my blog will be aware, I always start a blog post with a quote, right at the top (scroll up) – I opened this post with Casey’s favorite quote, from one of his many profiles online, only he would have recognized this, and made the link, he then freaked. I was trying to be gracious, let him know I have him, without releasing his dox. But in the end he released his own.
I never mentioned any phone numbers, and email addresses, any full names, and of Casey’s twitter accounts. But he did. Way to go noob troll. You pwned yourself.
And in closing. To ‘Anonymous’, this guy is representing you, it’s not the standard of people you need.
Also just FYI – He is AKA – NAKOMIS and NOAH etc etc on your ANONOPS IRC. He’s been great fun tho. He seems to require attention, but can’t distinguish between good attention and being ridiculed.
Peace.
J."
TLDR?
The Jester managed to make the fake impersonator give up his RL details, and reveal his connections to LulzSec itself.
He soon received a Pastebin link from an anonymous person, revealing even more details behind the "@real_j35t3r" account. What became known is this:
To verify the source, The Jester went on to unmask a YouTube video connecting Barrett Brown, Topiary and Sabu as part of LulzSec:
Since then, the @LulzSec twitter went quiet for 15 hours (and ongoing), as well as the @anonakomis twitter (the person who maintained the fake @real_j35t3r account).
So far, Topiary, Nakomis, Barrett, JoePie, and Kayla had been exposed. We may see more members revealed in time to come. If this gets to the FBI's attention, shit may hit the fan.
My opinion?
Personally, I feel LulzSec has gone too far with their hacking antics. They may have exposed company security flaws, but personal information was leaked and bank accounts compromised (etc. Paypal details). Too many people got trapped in the crossfire.
No matter what their crusade for lulz was, there is a fine boundary between wanting to wreck havoc on the online community and acting as crusaders for the 'common good' or whatever they claim it to be.
Thanks to them, we can expect more stringent Internet regulations in the years to come, but until then, let's just hope LulzSec continues to stay quiet and do nothing else, now that members' details have come to light. =3
I saw a meme they made in the paper when they hacked PBS. It said: "All your base are belong to Lulzsec." I was lol'ing at that at work and none of my coworkers got it.
Yet they're still Tweeting. I'll start believing they're exposed when they disappear off the grid, be it in jail or simply become unheard of, they certainly have done enough to get jail time and I have no doubts that they're aware.
The damage is done anyway, more and more groups are starting to abuse security weaknesses ever since Sony got hacked. Guess it proved no one is safe. Problem with them is that they don't boast about their 'achievement', nor do they release the info they steal publicly. Just got an e-mail from Sega and they've had customer data stolen, I don't use a universal pass so I don't really mind but you can see the issue here.
I couldn't give less of a fuck about someone getting their info out and having their Facebook plastered with dicks, the "lulz" is generally not that harmful (exceptions apply). The thought of other groups keeping silent having information from X and Y worries me more.
This is great. LulzSec did way too many things I don't agree with. Fighting for net neutrality and freedom of information, etc etc, is great but what they did is not.

you must realize the jester is a total boss. No one stops him since he always takes down the "bad guys". Supposably he has like some super base in sweden if I remember correctly. No one can take him down not even lulzsec. He's currently probably the best hacker around. He took down all the al-qaeda recruiting websites and stuff.
So wait, i read this thing 2 times through and there is something i dont get.
Aneka is interviewing Jester guy for a paper somewhere or a magazine. Then the Jester pays the interviewer money? Is it normal for interviewee's to pay interviewers? Shouldnt it be the other way around?
I dunno about all that crusader stuff but if you have the ability and power to do what they did what are you gonna do with it? Whats the point of having skills if you cant test them.
if these guys knew that this jester guy is one of the best, why would they try to fake him w/o pissing him off? did they think they couldn't get caught even by him?
I was just trying to go on theberrics.com website (skateboarding) and it wont let me navigate anywhere but the main page, and it keeps popping up with random things, including one picture of a "failboat" sailing and it says something about lulzsec on it. I wanted to watch Battle at the Berrics 4 today :/

So you agree with them releasing passwords and usernames of innocent people?
Also if you have the skills to do something like this, you can join companies that do just that. Other companies pay them to test their security and then the hackers say what can be improved and such.

Theres actually irc logs on the blogsite of them discussing about posting misinformation to lead attention away from themselves. All in all this twitter response doesn't need to mean that much.
Either way I hope they are all caught and receive the full extend of the law. It was sort of funny at first and they were showing leaks, exposing big companies being very sloppy with their customers data. But once they started releasing said data I lost all sympathie for them. Especially the hack of pron dot com and the posting of personal information of their customers was way over the line.
Vigilantism sometimes gets out of hand, in fact it's pretty common for it to get out of hand. Usually starts with just intentions (like forming a police force of your own for your community because the police don't do shit) and then it spirals out of control due to power struggles (gangs of chicago that were once those police forces now dealing drugs and destroying the community they had been formed to protect).
On June 19 2011 02:59 aztecx wrote: I hope they're not caught. If this is their real information I think that's sort of fucked. There should be some sort of honor I think.
lulzsec did not give any thought towards "honor" to lots of helpless victims. Why should they get any slack?
Tbh i don't quite believe lulzsec has been revealed by th3j35t3r (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th3j35t3r) as the two have been at each other for sometime now and lulzsec saying they were going to release the script that he uses may have caused th3j35t3r to do this. .
In my opinion th3j35t3r is trying to make it look like these people are lulzsec.
Anyway I hope lulzsec don't get caught, its very entertaining.
LulzSec just recently DDOSed Heroes of Newerth and a couple of other games, as a gamer, i am pleased they got pwned (even though S2 sux hard, there was no need to make matters worse)
what i dont understand about all those irc logs being revealed is that if those guys were so close to each other and concerned about their security, why can they be published that often? some whistle-blower from their own crew?

Yeah man it is entertaining not to be able to play your online games and worry about them potentially releasing your information. Wait, no it isn't. How could anyone be entertained by the fact that some 62,000 email and password combos have been released?

You should be able to tell from his quote, that he is one of the people who doesn't seem to realize what a great job S2 have been doing.
On topic however, I really don't know a lot about the jester and his intentions, nor lulzsec's I suppose. Lulzsec's actions could do good, but the way they have gone about doing it is just stupid and I don't see how people can justify that.
luzsec is/claimed responsibility for taking down HoN and LoL. They will find very little sympathy online even among the anarchist. They have declared war on 4chan/anon and with summer vacation that was a mistake.
For those who don't care about Lulzsec please note that ignoring the fact they've broken into bethesda's files, they've shut down LoL,Eve,Hon,Minecraft with ddos attacks they have no problems taking down anything they want to or at least trying to take it down.
Would you care if they did it to the battle.net servers? How about TL? How about if they hit Dreamhack mid tournament or the next MLG. Would you start caring? Because none of that stuff is out of the possibility if you look at what they've done already.
These guys are not hactivists they are not no better then street thugs who throw bricks into a shop window. Screw those guys. I hope they get jailed.

well let's not derail the topic too much, but they got ddos-ed by some indians i believe, and it took them about 4-5 days to get the system working again. That wouldnt be a problem, if the following 2 weeks wouldnt have been a fail-fest, there wasnt a single day when there wasnt a downtime, and they never ever gave an ETA for when it s coming up, only that they are working on it, be patient. Meanwhile they released 2 patches with more buyable content, and strangely balanced heroes, while the servers kept failing, the stat-data base too. Adn then ddos-ed again by LulzSec and having further smaller issues with the servers. So if they are one of the best, i wouldnt like to see a bad company running a game
I read this a million times and still don't understand, please clarify who is who at all points. So there's TheJester and therealjester, two differnet characters? Which one tried to talk to himself? And which one is actually real? And how is the fake one trying to profit? I'm lost.

I think it would be funny if they attacked B.net to be honest. Blizzard is pretty ruthless when it comes to security and lawsuits.
But for Teamliquid, we have R1CH, but if R1CH can't stop them, then God help us all.

Hope they get jailed?!?! Have you ever been to jail man, ? Probably not..They will have to spend at least a few years for what they have done(or unless the CIA or some other gov agency deciedes to make a deal with them.) Personally I believe jail is never the answer to comiting crimes such as these. Just because you did something "bad" in this society you have to go live in a 5x5 cell for years to come, constantly worrying about getting anal raped or killed/hurt.
I would mind if they didd hack the stated above, It would just be fucking lame. But do I wish them to go to jail (where there is a highly likely chance of getting hurt or killed.) which in end wishing death upon them? No thanks.
Hmm. Surely it's not wise to attack the CIA's website?

Summary:
Character A: TheJester Character B: lulzsec, aka fakeJester.
Lulzsec member, aka FakeJester, has an account on twitter I guess, where he's trying to pass himself off as the real Jester (but he's not).
The real TheJester, annoyed at this, messages fakejester and pretends to be a reporter asking for interviews/details. FakeJester believes it and starts invoicing (demand payment) via paypal with his own paypal account.
TheJester uses these paypal invoices to figure out who FakeJester is and allegedly connects FakeJester to lulzsec by hacking fakejester.

I think I am getting too old to keep up with internet/technology.
So someone not posting on twitter for 15 hours becomes very big news apparently. Also if you are good at digging up personal information you are real gangster. You get to post the name of the guy's college in true death-threat fashion. And the more info you get about him, the more street cred you got I assume?
I love the cries of "shouldn't there be some honour system!". There is no honour among thieves, and if this is in fact real, it is certainly armchair and popcorn worthy, as the justice is poetic.

they should have considered that before they decided to BREAK THE LAW. that's how things work, you break the law, you get prosecuted, you pay/go to jail. Although, maybe the CIA will just 'rendition' them instead.

The Jester isn't really someone you'd want to get on bad terms with. Unfortunately for lulzsec they attempted to include a fool in their operation and now he's a liability to the whole thing. Which is for the better in my opinion. If they target someone like the jester who's not even malicious then I don't see how they can have an ultimately good gameplan for future operations.

erm no one would realy make a deal with them, why? because they are skilless little pricks, all they can do is get people to call them on skype and redirect call to random poor companies so they get mass calls, or ddos random websites(you dont need to be black hat to do that) they are no Kevin Mitnicks or anything, no one would make deals with kids like that

lulz just pointed out how fucked up everyone is if they face no consequence for their actions
however lulz seems to be still twittering so im not really sure the hacker war is over yet it reminds me of that one movie where the good hackers try to hack the 1 evil hacker
He's no doubt good at what he does. I just wish he wouldn't say PWNED every 3 lines. I couldn't get the "Boom headshot" pure pwnage movies out of my head when reading it and it sort of takes away from the supposed gravity of the situation.

If you break the law, do illegal things, hack stuff - you are relying on being anonymous to not get caught. Someone posting your info basically is revealing you, not being anonymous is a bad thing for such people.
Not only that, but the info can also be used to even further screw the person over.

Just because you break the law you go to jail.?? Something in which doesnt help one another all that much to become a better person.. There should be something else other than locking one in a cage for a long period of time. Some type of theorpy or something.. I am not sure how to answer my own question, but I dont believe in locking people in cells for years is the right way.
And the for one to determine how much time you spend in prision is totally relative. Imagine if you spent 2-3 years for J-walking, Cross the Railroad tracks, Being drunk in public, disrupting the peace, etc etc

Thats too bad, because every civilized and uncivilized country believes it is.

No thanks.
They should have considered that before starting to act like pricks then, eh?

And the for one to determine how much time you spend in prision is totally relative. Imagine if you spent 2-3 years for J-walking, Cross the Railroad tracks, Being drunk in public, disrupting the peace, etc etc
Ya lets not have a deterrent or anything so people can do what they want and we'll just be like awww if u do something bad we can give u some therapy ;D

So that makes it right?!?!, Just because the majority of people think the same way its the right thing .. Most people arent even thinking for themselves they are just brained washed into thinking some bullshit. They are sheep and the shepards are controlling them.

Personally I am trying to help myself as best as I can, in the way that I FEEL are right, in so bettering the people around me... People make mistakes for plenty of different reasons, should they be condemmed to possible death for them.. ? Imo no, because one can always change if they have desire to do so, or are shown the "light". ^.^
These kids probably dont even know the full extent of what they are doin, how much they are actucally hurting others.

Pretty sure they do. Taking down the CIA website for shits and giggles? They know, they just don't care and should face the full extent of the law. Could you please take your anti-jail feelings elsewhere? It's derailing this thread from the importance of what we're really discussing.
TheJester sounds like an awesome guy, a hacker for good. I'm glad he was about to do what he has, hopefully he can continue to expose lulzsec and score a win for the good guys here.
