Maybe the strategical depth and talent required to win against other good players on a consistant basis? x_x Competitiveness?

Playing BW is about being better than your fellow man.
Since the skill levels differentiate so much in bw, there is so much to work on. People like it because:
a) Its very very competitive
b) It takes brains and creativity to be the best. People like to prove they are smarter/more creative.
c) It's a fun, fun game.
