Theres a big list of links to media about this @ the bottom./ BBC, the AP, etc. Edited in, for fun: Since this thread is pure depressing, I thought I'd share a little gem that was on the WoW thread. Fresh Prince, Real ID style. This is only meant to lighten up a depressing move by Blizz. Not to troll anybody. + Show Spoiler + Yo, this is the story all about how My Real ID made some *@*@ go down I'd like to take a moment Just listen to me And I'll tell you all about how Blizzard took my privacy In West Elwynn Forest, born and raised Adventuring is how I spent most of my days Questing, grouping, crafting my gear Grinding Ashen Verdict up to Revered When a guy named Bobby Kotick Who was up to no good Did something that not a single person understood He showed up on the forums, told us we'd use our real names And said "Now everyone who googles you will know you play our game." I whistled for a blue and when he came near He said they'd been planning Real ID for over a year I said I didn't think getting tracked down would be funny But he said "NAW FORGET IT, YO HOLMES IT'S MORE MONEY" I went to account management and canceled my pay And I yelled to Bobby Kotick, "Yo holmes, smell ya later," I looked back at Azeroth, devoid of security And thought 'Goodbye, WoW I think I'll keep my obscurity.'

Someone at the start of the thread said something about manning up, standing for your beliefs, being proud of being a gamer and that if you are ashamed of your forum/gaming activity then maybe you should not do it at all in the first place. That sounds good and for YEARS i was trying to be like that as well. I was never hiding what i was doing in my free time from my friends, i boasted about how i play on-line, spending all those hours in front of my PC. Whenever someone asked what im going to do tonight i never lied, i just said im gonna play. And i always laughed at those faces friends gave me, total lack of understanding, thinking im so childish. But then i went to my first work, big fancy corporation, and one time, during a lunch they just asked me how i like to spend my time. So as usual, i told them. One guy picked that up and started to make fun out of me "What the hell you are running killing dragons, haha" (was a raiding player in WoW at a time). There were all those people around that i worked with, and i just had to try to explain how it works and everything, that theres millions of people playing it world widely etc. But imagine explaining to completely clueless people how raiding Molten Core works, even in the simplest worlds, using the simplest analogies they could understand. To them, i just sounded like a retard because for them the quality time was geting drunk friday evening and hitting the disco. But i had to work with them and they never treated me seriously ever since, and i had to work with them, every single day. I always felt the impact of that conversation and it came back many, many times. That experience really made me change my ways about sharing my gaming habits with the outside world. I have close friends im talking about gaming all the time, my girlfriend knows i will always have that nerd in me as well. But there is no way im ever sharing the gamer-in-me again to strangers. People just don't understand. About a year ago i started practicing Muay Thai. I'd rather share that with the clueless masses, at least punching people in the face is something they can understand. So no, I don't want for the people to know that im an avid gamer. I am not going to use blizz forums. Never did anyways.

We've given a great deal of consideration to the design of Real ID as a company, as gamers, and as enthusiastic users of the various online-gaming, communication, and social-networking services that have become available in recent years. As these services have become more and more popular, gamers have become part of an increasingly connected and intimate global community -- friendships are much more easily forged across long distances, and at conventions like PAX or our own BlizzCon, we've seen first-hand how gamers who may have never actually met in person have formed meaningful real-life relationships across borders and oceans. As the way gamers interact with one another continues to evolve, our goal is to ensure Battle.net is equipped to handle the ever-changing social-gaming experience for years to come. Which if of course why they removed cross-region play...? ![]()

They've shown again and again that they do not care about their customers. Maybe they at least care about their employees. ;; With every announcement they make, they make it easier and easier for me not to buy the game.

I don't think blizzard/activision has ever considered something like you described, because they develop those games, and it's totally normal for them. It's only their job. They don't seem to realize the effect it might have on people with different styles of jobs.
