very nice thread scott.
I love WCG time All the countries have such great competitions (that have em of course) and I love following em

So uzbekistan have a Starcraft WCG qualifier, but sweden don't
Makes sense.........

StarCraft 1 is not dieing, its community is strong as hell, and will only grow MASSIVELY when Stacraft 2 comes out. So the correct phrase would be, no sponsors in Sweden were intelligent enough to jump on a booming community.

Nice job Dknight, always interesting to follow.
It is unfortunate though that most of the countries sending Starcraft players are only sending one player.
|
oh gosh, only like ~25 starcraft players there for the whole world.... sad :/

Austria is done already, Gamtja won 2-1 over ETBrood afaik. It might have been some qualifier but I'm quite convinced it was the main event yet.
|
I think it was just a qualifier infernal.
Here are some others I know Argentina: ??? China PR: July 25-27th Ecuador: September 6-7th Korea: ??? Russia: September 12-114th Singapore: August 7-8th Ukraine: August 16-17th
The dates are taken from the WCG main site and might be off. All of these countries are sending at least 1 but it's likely that China, Korea and Russia will send more than one.
Israel might also be sending a player, I'm not quite sure

Not only that, but sc2 wont be done for this wcg, so why would it be beneficial for them to send someone to wcg this year, the only small gain for the sponsor is that they make a name for themselves in the sc community. And tl.net is not the typical sc community, ttl.net community is very tight and strong, but in a sc is a ten year old game, and there isnt as much interest in it anymore.

go rE.Perro1 for Columbia, good luck in columbia finals.

I thought this was the resolution to the map problem. Whats the status of that now?
|
What map problem?
Solution? The maps are pretty good compared to the past. You want them to change the maps again?

Malaysia = Kuala Lumpur aug 15-17

only one american? ouch GL

Pretty sure it wasn't. They have 3 qualifiers I believe but it'd be nice to have Gamtja or ETBrood confirm/deny this.

The games for Sweden WCG hasn't been announced yet, and well There are companies who are willing to sponsor BW players, but the WCG guys haven't given any thumbs up for any games yet...

Wow, would be sick if Sweden actually had SC in WCG this year.

Scott, you're so cute.
I always enjoyed following WCG, but seems to be falling out more and more each year. For obvious reasons though I suppose.

UK WCG finals tomorrow. Just 1 spot, seems liek it's just me and kwark. Don't think anybody is showing up for the offline qualifier (due to £80 + BYOC requirements)

Poland have 3 slots for WCG but only 1 spot is sponsored. other 2 guys have to pay them self

Sc community in Vietnam is also growing massively as hell, we want more slots at WCG but Samsung is not smart enough to realize that. Hope it is positive when SC2 comes out it is sad that NO Terran from Korea and I have seen no solid Terran from the int qualifier sofar, except CHinaTTT.. Anyway, Very likely that we gonna have some from Russia, land of gosu Terran
|
I bet BRAT_OK is gonna take it this year! I hope so!
|
WCG Poland this year was rather small, only a couple hundred people participated in the online qualifiers for SC:BW. The last one finished yesterday and now we all know the finalists:
1. Dreiven P (Last year's champion) 2. MiStrZZZ P (POL~Team qualifiers) 3. ZZZero Z (1st online qualifiers) 4. Draco P (1st online qualifiers) 5. User Z (2nd online qualifiers) 6. Tarson T (2nd online qualifiers) 7. ParanOid Z (3rd online qualifiers) 8. MoonShine Z (3rd online qualifiers)
4x Z 3x P 1x T
|
Poland always has exciting qualifers

WCG Malaysia 2008 Results:- #1 M1-JohnRambo - to Germany #2 M1-MarinE[F2F] #3 M1-TaKaFuL

MarinE, what happened? I thought you'd be a lock this year...
I'd wager that jj is the person who's played Starcraft at the most grand finals now for WCG
|
I had a dream that PJ beat Jaedong in the finals and then Jaedong stood up and jumped out the window to his death. I can't help but notice that PJ isn't even going so I guess Jaedong will live for at least 1 more year!

Anyway, Very likely that we gonna have some from Russia, land of gosu Terran Yeah So far, we had 6 nationals qualifiers for starcraft, and there were such races between finalists: 1st place terran - 5 1st place zerg - 1 1st place protoss -0 2nd place terran - 5 2nd place zerg - 1 2nd place protoss -0 3rd place terran - 4 3rd place zerg - 2 3rd place protoss - 0
This year we have four favourites: Androide (T), Advocate (T), Brat_ok (T) and NotForu (Z)...but nobody can predict it for sure: WCG Russia is tough as hell and there will be a plenty of top-gosu this year.

Updated with all the results from the past few WCGs: Costa Rica, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore.
|
Umm, Lycan hasn't qualified yet as far as I know, Costa Rico finals are at the end of August, 30th-31st I think

Yeah, was a mistake. Even had the CR qualifiers in the tournaments as Aug 30th. Brain fart.

this tournament is the perfect analogue of olympic basketball

hi all ! although i won my local qualifiers , i wont be going to the grand finals 1) exams too near grand finals 2) no sponsors Total cash needed to fly to germany is around 3.5k USD. Many games that are held in singapore will not fly too. ( wc3 , nfs , sc , fifa , vf5 and c&c3). If u wanna go , u have to pay urself.
|
wow, were any of the games sponsored Jukebox?
|
yea , mostly xbox games , aoe3 and cs... and tat's about it ! my prize for winning sg wcg , a 22" samsung monitor ... Well over here , competitive scene is dying... everyone is playing either dota or mmorpg.
|
Been a while since our country participated....
I hated it when our sole representative makes it out of the group stages then gets killed by a Korean, just like what happened when SteelHeart got beaten by Hwasin after the group stages..

WCG Panama Results: 1. oSp)ChroniC 2. Brayant 3. iloverum
ChroniC is probably better known as oSp)LimbiC or iD.CocoA who competed for the United States in 2005.
Other than him, it seems like none of the other "known" Panama players bothered to play in the qualification
|
Interesting...I didn't know CocoA had double citizenship Yay for him I guess!
P.s.: you could fix the OP, the WGT news-post about WCG Hungary is very vague. The bronze match was won by Kashu[F2F] over Dromedar[F2F] - as I reported in my topic here, on TL. It didn't get that many views I guess it'd be in vain to dig it up, but please fix that, even though it's just a small non-important detail Ty

lol that cocoa just pops up like that

Canada isn't sending someone means JF isn't going to be at the biggest international competition all year. I was looking forward to seeing Jangfei in WCG.
There are a multitude of protoss and a sparse line up terrans. Korea didn't even send one.

Zatoichi can't go so tago will take the spot most likely
GGs

I read that Zato isn't going because of his gf? Sounds pretty lame if that's the case.

so Small is Z or P coz in one source i see he's P in other one he's Z? xD

Too bad we don't have another WCG representative in StarCraft..
SteelHeart got owned bad by Hwasin during 2006, and SteelHeart even managed to sweep his group, too bad.....

Hey, I have a question for people who have been to WCG before or they simply know. Is there a possibility to obs games which are not on "Main Stage"? In some smaller rooms or even just by watching from player's back? Because I wouldn't like to travel so far away only for watching these few games...
|
I know last year you had to have a badge (either player, staff or press) to get upstairs where all the games were played, don't know what it will be like in Germany
|
in germany you don't need any vip/press badge, everyone will have access to the gaming area just like in blizzcon you can watch players back.
|

There is no possibility to observe games, beside of standing in the back of the players outside the tournamentarea. So some players are close to the wall, some sit in the middle. Either way its always worse to come here and meet ppl and players <)
