my biggest pet peave... and i not directing this to anyone in particular. But when people say, oh i havent trained in weeks, or played in weeks, and then go play in the biggest competiton of their bw careers. Its like... the entire point of you playing for all of these years is to mold you into a great bw player and now you have the opportunity to show how good you are and.. you cop out and say, oh well i havent been playing or practicing? I think people just say that when they lose personally, just to help them keep face. If not then if they truly didnt even 'touch' bw for 3weeks prior to the tournament then why even play? why even call yourself a bw player? just my 2 cents. GL to all those playing

Well aware, since ive competed in half a dozen wcgs, including the nationals. But we dont play bw for the money? And bragging rights are limited, since generally the best of usa dont show to the finals or when they do they make excuses. Not to mention most of the great usa players dont even play anymore

I will make sure Tasteless plays Day first round, just so he can't get any further, that way we can have more shout casting done by him.

LJ what you say is mostly right but the truth is that many of the people just don't have time to practice. They don't want people to think that they did practice and then played shitty anyway, so they make their excuse public. I'm sure there are some people that say they don't practice just to be cowards but honestly I don't think that's what most people at WCG are doing. Maybe the kids in op x-17 are doing that :o

and as far as the greatest usa players not playing anymore... well, it doesn't even make sense. If they aren't playing, then they're not good anymore. And if you're going to count on just potential, then the fact is that the greatest USA players don't even own BW. They are geniuses doing other things with their lives than playing BW

Mmmmm does anyone know where the US Open is being held?? Or any of the regionals for that matter??

I want to attend the US Open if its in LA again, last year it was 15 minutes from my house but I was with my gf that day so couldnt come

IMO USA will do much better in WCG this year, it seems like USA gamers are making a comeback in the community... and we've got a few people who are active enough to make some noise at WCG.

Hopefully Idra and Day and do pretty well, since they seem like the most active at the moment.

froz/assem/whear >>> artosis imo. I bet if they picked up the game for 2-3 weeks they could beat just about anyone in usa though i dont think tsu's name belongs up there :x He was a legend, sure, but so was NTT, and once people got good enough to realize mass scv isnt a valid strat, he stopped being idolized Same with Tsu's random strats, though inventive and great for bw, not viable nowadays.

So thats what i meant NoNy, the idea that several players could pickup the game and dominate with less than a month's practice, just chose not to. I dont mean to belittle anyone by my opinions though, cause thats what they are, just opinions. I havent seen an artosis replay in probably... 2yrs? He could very well be way better than anyone who has ever played from the usa, but still think that at least froz/assem/rekrul could dominate anyone in usa with a month's practice. Perhaps its biased, infact it probably is

I think FroZ has the talent to be a top player in the USA within a month for sure. Rekrul as well to a degree. But to say "dominate" absolutely not. Only Assem has that level these days that I would go as far as to say "dominate." Whear is out of his time and would need a lot longer to get even "top" status. And Froz has come back SEVERAL times and absolutely not "dominated." with MORE than a month of practice. Believe it or not USA actually has several players that are considered "top" on the non korean scene atm and being as such they dont get "dominated" typically by players. They may lose more than they win vs the Testie, Mondragon, Draco PJ's of the world but they dont get dominated. Myself included.

And I am tired of people living in the past with US names. They are great players and pioneers of the sport for us. But as it is, stop listing them as "top" players. They dont play and when they do it is for an event, league or fun and they barely make a splash. There are of course a few exceptions like Ret/Smuft/FroZ(to a degree) who have come back and actually done some damage.

Amen! I couldn't agree with you more. So many people are still living in the past about who the best players in the USA are...were no longer living in 2002-2004. There's plenty of rising talent coming from the USA and yes even our best can compete with many of the "top" outside of South Korea.

Ok, i confess i do live in the past. But its not like our current top players dominate or even win at the international scene either? I dont think they have the lan experience it takes to do well, besides artosis, who of course would still be considered just a mediocre amature in korea if he competed. So all in all, i do concede that point and whear probably would need more than a month. But, i still believe Assem/Froz/Rekrul with 1-2mths practice would best any the usa had to offer, and thats what i meant by the top players not really being able to compete or show to the events. And even if they were in top form, im not too sure they could dominate all that well either on the international level, though with 2 of them having kor pro team experience and froz with all of his wcg experience, i think they would do good at wcg at least, vs non-asians. So i dont really have a point i guess now that i think about it, so gl to all of the players and i hope they actually take it seriously and make a dent at wcg? Though i doubt they will b/c excuses are better ;x thats mean :[

did you miss the part where he pointed out froz has come back for the last 2 wcgs and was anything but dominating of the rest of the field?

hmm... good points all around. in my opinion, lastgosu is about to do what LJ is saying assem/froz/rekrul could do.

i think that most top players who could return from retirement and do well have spent some period in their life where they practiced a lot and very seriously. there are a lot of other players that have never practiced hard but they havent quit for long periods of time either. they get on bnet, play ~3 serious games in a night, obs 5 games, play a few UMS, etc, but they never completely quit BW. if i had to choose between doing that for a year or practicing hardcore for 5 months, not playing for 5 months, then getting back in shape for 2 months before wcg, i'd do the latter. and all the fans seem to forget that these retirees, at some point, trained a shitload, and say it's all talent that they can come back with "minimal practice" and dominate.

truth is that despite their long periods of not touching the game, they have more quality practice in them than the regular players. it's not hard to pick up where you left off after a long break. and for people that have achieved a good understanding of the game, it's not hard to pick up on new strats by watching vods and reps, or to just figure out new strats on your own in a short period of time. but this "higher understanding" never came naturally or from pure talent, but rather it sprung out of a period of high-intensity training that never left the person

I dunno, the "lan experience" thing is crap in my opinion. I've played lan only a few times and I played considerably better than I do on bnet / regularly. Possibly because I am an athlete that gets an adrenaline rush from "showing off" so-to-speak by playing in front of people. If there are people that crumble at lans I have not seen them. Not saying it isnt true, just saying I dont think that factors in.

IdrA pointed out a point missed. FroZ has come back. Lost and disappeared into obscurity again.

Whear is beyond his time. And comparing his skill relative to 3-5 years ago and what bw is NOW, is silly.

Rekrul is nice but never had the PvZ to be a "dominating" player. Even when he was absolutely at his best. So a Day/Lz/Me/Crayon/Lastgosu and various other z's USA has to offer would be more than enough to "Monkey" Rekrul numerous times.

I think I cannot stress enough yet again, admitting to living in the past is only admitting to a huge annoyance. They were damn great times. I was there, I gamed with them, loved it and moved on. Now we have new top players, they are as good if not better. If they dont glimmer as much it is because replays/rep sites/years and most importantly various competitive ladders have made the standard bw gamer a better gamer than the average sc/bw gamer of years past. Also, the "top" player hierarchy is ALOT closer than it was in the past, for the same reasons. We live in a new(ish) era of bw where the gaps are a lot closer and the top players can all exchange blows.

The era of "old names dominating" is also psychologically behind us. They come back for a big event, usually train at a higher level than most because they live off of their name. Do "ok" because they have raw talent / better training partners than most. But then fizzle out and lose. Yet time in and time again fanboyism would have us believe they are the risen mesiah of bw each time. I think we should move away from it. Really the only player I think that has ever tickled this possibility is Ret. He has come back like 2-3 times and been top 1-3 each time.
