I think they'll choose allies if it's a mirror matchup, although I think one of the broadcasting stations chooses allies no matter what. they choose allies if the colors are too similar (white/beige this game) and when they feel like it, too 2 lings in s2's main, many more chasing them
They also tend to do it a little more often in mirror matchups, especially PvP, since then you can click on a pylon or archon or w/e and see which player it belongs to (by the color of the circle). Can help a little with manner pylons vs. defensive pylons, though I suppose an experienced viewer would be able to tell the difference anyways.
