You can't expect me to do several of these in such a short time frame. But since a lot of you probably didn't even notice it, read it before the match.
Neither me nor Ryo wanted to predict the outcome of the MBC vs. STX match, so I'm trying out something instead of a Q&A, just for fun. But it has a different purpose as well than just lulz. For those of you expecting some sort of Light vs. Kal fanboy rage battle, you'll be disappointed. It's even worse if you expect some form of Flash/Jaedong/Bisu praise in the wierdest thread possible for it. No, this time, we're cutting the little guys some slack, and try to understand part of the beauty of Team League Starcraft. Players can be awesome without several OSL and MSL titles, and some put the team first. In this section, join me and Ryo as we try to give some less outstanding players some of the respect they deserve. Maybe you'll find out something new yourself? The two players we're looking at are Jaehoon and FrOzen.
Together with Sea, Light and HyuN, Jaehoon forms the backbone of the current MBCGame HERO team. While Sea/Light are the team’s Ace players and stars, and Hyun serves the role of the “mother” in the team house, it can be said that the emotional health of the HERO team is closely tied to that of Jaehoon. If rumors from both Dailyesports and Korean internet forums are to be believed, Coach Ha’s departure from MBC in September was closely tied to player dissatisfaction over Jaehoon’s numerous breakdowns last season under an “overly strict” training supervision. Did the players push Coach Ha out or was his resignation due to another reason? Till this day, there has been no confirmation. But what is clear is that the players rallied closely behind Jaehoon during the dark days of his career and even good friend and teammate Tyson has stated that the revival of the HERO protoss line is tied to the performance of Jaehoon.
Jaehoon's current Form
When tracking his form, you can more or less disregard any statistics prior to this season. Before this season, Jaehoon’s longest winning streak was 2 games. This entire season, he has not loss more than 2 games in a row while just last month, he was on a 5 game winning streak before finally taken down by Stork himself. His remarkable rise in form has prompted DES to call him the reincarnation of the Spirit Toss (Pusan). Jaehoon’s current winrate this season is 59%.
Highlights
His win against Really showing both good micro and the strong macro style that has been a hallmark of his games this season.
Of course, the most memorable, jubilant moment of Jaehoon’s career thus far… the win against Ych which earned him a place in the MSL Ro32 for the first time in his career.
I nearly shed a tear myself.
Did you know… ?
"My closest friend is Jaehoon from MBCgame. He’s a friend to whom I reveal my deepest thoughts and feelings." – Lee Jaedong , Nate interview March 8th 2010
We’ve all heard about Jaehoon’s (and indeed the MBC team’s) friendship with Khan protosses Stork and Jangbi. But by far his closest friend in gaming is Jaedong. They have been buddies since their amateur days, as n.Die clanmates both from Ulsan.
Like Jaedong, Jaehoon enjoys hiking in his spare time.
Jaehoon’s best friend in MBC is his teammate and roommate, Light.
Jaehoon was once called “naemsaekko” (Korean term for the Pokemon Gloom) by Hyun because of his purple hair and slightly sad demeanor.
Jaehoon has many noona (“older sister”) fans. For example MBC’s Special Forces team coach, Lim Sura, has often encouraged Jaehoon.
His final win against yCh in the MST, earning him a place in the MSL for the first time ever, brought tears to the eyes of many fans, according to accounts from the HERO gallery on Dcinside.
Jaehoon’s biggest wish this season is for fans to give him a cool and awesome nickname like his Khan protoss friends have.
Frozen, the basket ball player Terran by mustaju Frozen’s role in the team
STX is a team of many talents, but few very exceptional players, and a lot of streaks, both good and bad. Superficially, Frozen fits the description of the average STX player perfectly, as he has both periods of winning a lot and then failing spectacularly many times after. But why do I consider him different? Because I became a STX fan right after reading a letter written by noone other than his mother. This particular letter of advice was heart warming and I’d like to believe it exemplifies the heart of the team better than anything the players could have said themselves.I think Frozen is a huge moral support to his team, as he keeps training and practicing hard while the rest of the team might be devastated of long loss streaks. These qualities make Frozen the heart of STX SouL. And believe me, I love that team.
Frozen’s current form
Frozen is currently probably the third best Terran on STX, and this in itself should mean that he’s pretty bad, since Bogus and Classic are mediocre, and Frozen’s official win record is nothing to be proud of. But first looks can be deceptive. Did you know that in the 2010 Winter OSL Wildcard Tournament, he made it all the way to the finals, where he lost to his teammate Calm? Pfff, you might say. Those are not even official matches! But let’s look at the players he beat to get to that position. Saint, RuBy, Stats, Modesty, Baby, Neo.G_Soulkey. 4 of these players are aces on their team. Not bad, eh? Too bad that he went on a loss streak in PL shortly after, but at least he lost to really good players. Like Fantasy, Snow, and free, while taking a really good TvT game on Fortress from forGG. Although there’s much to be desired, Frozen is certainly not the autoloss many people think him to be.
Frozen’s highlights:
Frozen has few real highlights, but he has defeated strong opponents in the past. And sometimes just defeating is not enough.
...Frozen is 2-1 against Jaedong and 1-0 against Upmagic, defeating them both in a single MSL group and winning it?
...Frozen wanted to be a basketball player before becoming a StarCraft progamer?
...Frozen was 0-12 for KHAN in PL the season before he joined STX?
....Frozen carried the team through much of the Ro5 SPL 2009-2010 after the match fixing scandal ? ...that if given the chance, Frozen wants to play Neo.G_Soulkey and Bisu the most? (if you count OSL prelims and STX masters, he is 4-2!! vs. Bisu and 2-2 against Soulkey. If not, he’s 1-1 against Bisu and 0-0 against Soulkey.)
... his Korean nicknames include "Human Bonjwa", "Loss-King", "Black magic Terran" and "Roller-coaster Terran"?

lol I might inadvertently jinx the team, so I'm just going to hope for a good series of games!^^
There needs to be a Jaedong v Kal game though. That would be really exciting.
I would disagree due to their extremely one-sided record, but Kal also just managed to beat Flash, so who knows?
Many of the games Kal's played against Jaedong or Flash he just seems to lose complete focus in the lategame. I'm thinking that maybe after beating Flash, he'll really be able to take it to JD. Maybe, or maybe not. Anyway, see how it goes.
Thanks for the OP! I'm looking forward to this match, but even though I am an OZ, I must say that our chances of winning seem slim against STX who has such a smorgasbord of excellent players. We'll just have to comfort ourselves with Jaedong hopefully crushing his opponent.
On December 13 2010 07:46 Yxes2211 wrote: I want this to go to ace... and JD get some damn Ace match confidence back lol
That'd be nice to watch but you have to think long term. I want Oz to start winning without going to the ace match, develop some degree of consistency from anyone. Then go on a tear until they're within striking distance of 6th. Dominate winners league (they're still going winners league right?), grab 6th, hold it from two rounds. Finish with a heart wrenching Cinderella run through the play-off's to meet skt in the finals. Then a totally anti-climatic 4-0 devastation, Bisu getting cheesed by killer, fantasy getting bbs'd out by HiyA, JD raping best and anytime sticking it to boxers team for some OSL nostalgia. IT all has to start tonight!
princess and anytime both have the potential to take games. if drum-magikarp can keep playing well enough to beat JD, he could also take a game. killer is still killer. could play ok or just fail. lomo cheese to finish off the set?
Typically early LR thread for STX games - wd Mustaju.
I'm looking forward to this one - anything to take my mind off of yesterday's toweling.
But seriously, I'd love a JD-Kal game with Kal in really good form atm. Also let's see Hiya in PL pls - I refuse to trade him (he must come good soon, right?).

Presumably. The MBC calendar was right yesterday (OGN was wrong) and it has this game.
Ugh, probably missing yet another STX game. I'm predicting a fairly easy win though. I expect wins from Bogus, Modesty, Classic, and Calm, particularly if he lands a ZvZ. I think we'll probably be holding Kal for a later set and won't see him at all.

Actually, that makes a ton of sense. I'm pretty hopped up on painkillers for my neck so I'm not thinking clearly.
Here's for you Kal/Oz!! =D (Also, am I the only one that gets excited when they get quoted?)
Modesty with ling advantage at killer's nat - but a whole bunch of new lings out for killer and he holds for now adding another creep at his nat - sunken! Modesty with more lings at killer's nat - killer losing lots of lings!
Modesty has his spire back up - doesn't have many drones though But Killer probably doesn't have that many either does have a sunken up again in his nat
he's adding his own spire
Modesty's lings destroy the spore at killer's nat - the one muta can now come and play
I don't get all the ZvZ hate. That game was more than just a build order and muta micro battle, there was definite strategy going on there. There's a reason the commentators finished the game by talking about the "ZvZ sniper".
On December 13 2010 18:27 Kanil wrote: So Killer takes an expansion, takes out Modesty's spire, and still loses pathetically? Most normal thing in the world.
Destroying the spire didn't really put him ahead. His own spire was really late, and he lost a ton of lings in his attack on the spire - which let Modesty take the initiative with his major ling advantage and Killer was forced to defend for the rest of the match
I think Killer might have done a bit better had he not opted for a spore first at his nat against one muta and instead went for a sunken against the masses of incoming lings, but even then it might not have led to a win for him.
On December 13 2010 18:26 Zona wrote: and Killer concedes
so Killer did have a special build, which failed spectacularly
Well, after he killed Modesty's spire, Modesty was forced to all-in. TBH, Killer mistimed his agression a bit, I think the goal of this is to kill the spire before it finishes. If he had done so, he would've been able to save the money for evo + 2 spores.
I sincerely think this game is underrated. Modesty did some really fancy ling and muta micro, without which Killer surely would have gotten the lead and his build would have worked. I was impressed, myself, but then again, people are insanely biased by ZvZ.
EDIT: Fixed because I have no Idea why I wrote that part.

Modesty's muta micro was not impressive, he ate so much of Killer's early scourge (without mutas with them!) that he was brought down from 6 mutas back to 1 (well that plus his lack of micro vs the spore), if his control was better he could have ended the game a lot earlier.
This was a pretty high-level zvz. Nikon is right, Killer attacked the spire too late. Had he killed the spire before it finished, he would have won with a superior economy. Modesty also played really well to hold off the initial ling attack long enough for the spire to finish. This game was decided by that 1 milisecond when the spire died and that 1 muta popped. People who say these guys played bad don't play zvz or dont understand it.

TBH I'm trying to greatly reduce how much BW I watch...but I'm still drawn in...
Also, i'm REALLY glad there is some love of ZvZ in this thread, Its the fastest match up, so i think its the most intense. early game pvp and tvt is pretty much non existent, so you gotta wait for those games to be good.
ZvZ is all about micro, because once the game is 5 minutes in, it could also be close to over. And it IS dynamic!
On December 13 2010 18:36 TheNessman wrote: but why was his spire so late anyways?
I think Killer's plan was to win with lings + superior mineral economy and make modesty waste all of his gas? The spire went up though and his plan failed.
Sky attacking into Kal's main with superior goon numbers - his zealot bugs out them someone walled off Kal's main with a pylon - Kal I think - buys him some time! he's got an observer out Kal holds for now as he finishes off Sky's trapped goons
Its still pretty even... Just kind of switched the build a little bit, but i don't understand why sHy doesn't have more units, he should be out producing Kal... but he isnt.
oh wtf - Sky moves his obs away from the nat just as the DT arrives - to snipe an obs? 2 more gates being added in Sky's main - dt gets to work there - probes being pulled after 4 kills! 6 kills!
Kal gearing up to take his third. Will Sky do the same? Apparently not, as he moves some goons to the would-be expo to deter STX's player from taking it for the time being.
Kal consolidating his advantage, adding cannons to his nat and presuambly main. Sky moving out into the center with his army and a shuttle. Not doing much of anything though.
Kal taking a 3rd at 3 armies meet north of the eastern ridge but Sky pulls away Kal now has 3+ templar with his army, takes control of the eastern ridge and aprks his army there
I have 2 things to say about that game. First, if you're going to goon all-in with proxy gates, at least make it a 4 gate for the extra units. Second, if you are going to goon all-in, you should be able to micro those goons. The first engagement was embarrassingly bad.

if I remember correctly Bisu didn't hide gateways somewhere on the map, I guess it was Hyo's "gimmick" here
Yeah, but like Zona said, Bisu's 3gate allin wasn't scouted either. And it's not the point. The point is, one of the best Protoss players, especially in terms of micro, can be short against Kal in this 3 gate vs 2 gate micro battle, where Kal's pimp shuttle micro did wonders against Bisu. And, in this game, pylon block really killed the allin. It was not even close.
I want JD vs Bogus and Hiya vs Calm. That could probably bring it to 2-2. And I want Hiya on ace if it happens to be ace. I think no one dares to put a P vs Jae, and puts a zerg instead - and then OOOOPS ^_^ Here comes the Magicarp with some imba build like on Pathfinder :D

It's just that he attacked when he had even number of units with Kal, which defeats the whole idea of having more gates in the first place...

That wasn't even good micro from JD. it was just rather horrendous (lack of) micro from hero.
So, Backho, Lomo, Anytime, and Princess/Shy left to hopefully bring it to Ace. It happened last time against Hite with Lomo and Princess, so here's to hoping.

SC2 isn't bad game but a) If it's wanting to "end" BroodWar while clearly not being better why the hell would it be loved b) It's not bad but really top players' skill would be wasted on it. Brood War is more challenging.

HiyA probably practices with Killer and so counts on his opponent to make some stupid fail mistakes like Killer always does, and pretty much falls apart when he's not making mistakes but plays just comfortably, even if not perfect with macro and all this - just at medium level. He has no suitable Zerg to practice with. He has facepalmzerg killer, he has promising but unexperienced Princess, and he has JD, practicing with whom he can only see how to BEAT JAEDONG by using his particular weak spots (and well probably which won't work more than once). He has no partner to practice a game vs a "spherical Zerg in vacuum". That's the problem.
Against a Protoss he probably has a better position, since he has Anytime in his team. Experience is really big thing.

It was an Oz long before it was a KT
You sure about that?
child labor terran huehue but srs oz has been oz too long honestly i would rather have had oz disband than estro (maybe team balance would be fked up for whoever got the dong) because atm they're good for nothing more than 1 good game and comical relief d=

Now you're just exaggerating. Oz went to the proleague finals not too long ago, they have arguably the best Zerg to ever play the game, and had a really solid core of ForGG, Lomo, Backho (back when he could win PvTs), Anytime, and Jaedong once upon a time. Estro on the other hand has an entire history marked with failure, underachieving, and mediocrity. They've never made once made the post season...hardly less fail than Oz is right now.
Lol I just watched the Jaedong vs Hero game....holy shit it's scary when jaedong gets a B.O advantage in ZvZ, that game felt so horribly one sided. Like dropping an atomic bomb on some rural village in Kazakhstan lol
Time for Oz to reveal their new recruits, bring down the hammer on this Pro League Nonsense!
Coach Cho Jeong Woong of Hwaseung Oz announced the immediate recruitment of three new players (pictured below) to help "improve the team's depth" and deal with "situations in which we cannot use Lee Jae Dong"
Hwaseung Coach ChoJeongWoong, "I am very excited about the new players" Atrioc FIGHTING!
so glad calm finally won a ZvT. He's always seemed pretty good in the matchup since he started his losing streak to fantasy, but always JUST losing :\. he's got such good midgame play, but still has problems vs cheese and in the lategame (or having his queens scouted by flash).

This actually means a lot to me. Thank you!
You are welcome. I'm kinda a Khan/MBC/STX fan now. Hope they all make it to the playoffs. ^^
Game 1: Modesty is in a 6 game winning streak (5-2 in the last six months of ZvZ, two losses to the Dong) O.o
Game 3:

I loved the Calm's Muta switch, totally wrecked Hiya's base.
Game 4: Everyone knew that Jaedong would be sent out, Hero was just a lamb to be sacrificed.
Game 5: I expected Perfectman, so Shuttle would be a natural choice but Coach was probably afraid of Princess so he sent Bogus, he is more well rounded (pun indeed, look at his nose for crying out loud.)

If any of these new recruits switch to Terran or Protoss I firmly believe they would do better than the rest of the Oz lineup.
