Neither me nor Ryo wanted to predict the outcome of the match, so I'm trying out something instead of a Q&A, just for fun. But it has a different purpose as well than just lulz. For those of you expecting some sort of Light vs. Kal fanboy rage battle, you'll be disappointed. It's even worse if you expect some form of Flash/Jaedong/Bisu praise in the wierdest thread possible for it. No, this time, we're cutting the little guys some slack, and try to understand part of the beauty of Team League Starcraft. Players can be awesome without several OSL and MSL titles, and some put the team first. In this section, join me and Ryo as we try to give some less outstanding players some of the respect they deserve. Maybe you'll find out something new yourself? The two players we're looking at are Jaehoon and FrOzen.
Together with Sea, Light and HyuN, Jaehoon forms the backbone of the current MBCGame HERO team. While Sea/Light are the team’s Ace players and stars, and Hyun serves the role of the “mother” in the team house, it can be said that the emotional health of the HERO team is closely tied to that of Jaehoon. If rumors from both Dailyesports and Korean internet forums are to be believed, Coach Ha’s departure from MBC in September was closely tied to player dissatisfaction over Jaehoon’s numerous breakdowns last season under an “overly strict” training supervision. Did the players push Coach Ha out or was his resignation due to another reason? Till this day, there has been no confirmation. But what is clear is that the players rallied closely behind Jaehoon during the dark days of his career and even good friend and teammate Tyson has stated that the revival of the HERO protoss line is tied to the performance of Jaehoon.
Jaehoon's current Form
When tracking his form, you can more or less disregard any statistics prior to this season. Before this season, Jaehoon’s longest winning streak was 2 games. This entire season, he has not loss more than 2 games in a row while just last month, he was on a 5 game winning streak before finally taken down by Stork himself. His remarkable rise in form has prompted DES to call him the reincarnation of the Spirit Toss (Pusan). Jaehoon’s current winrate this season is 59%.
Highlights
His win against Really showing both good micro and the strong macro style that has been a hallmark of his games this season.
Of course, the most memorable, jubilant moment of Jaehoon’s career thus far… the win against Ych which earned him a place in the MSL Ro32 for the first time in his career.
I nearly shed a tear myself.
Did you know… ?
"My closest friend is Jaehoon from MBCgame. He’s a friend to whom I reveal my deepest thoughts and feelings." – Lee Jaedong , Nate interview March 8th 2010
We’ve all heard about Jaehoon’s (and indeed the MBC team’s) friendship with Khan protosses Stork and Jangbi. But by far his closest friend in gaming is Jaedong. They have been buddies since their amateur days, as n.Die clanmates both from Ulsan.
Like Jaedong, Jaehoon enjoys hiking in his spare time.
Jaehoon’s best friend in MBC is his teammate and roommate, Light.
Jaehoon was once called “naemsaekko” (Korean term for the Pokemon Gloom) by Hyun because of his purple hair and slightly sad demeanor.
Jaehoon has many noona (“older sister”) fans. For example MBC’s Special Forces team coach, Lim Sura, has often encouraged Jaehoon.
His final win against yCh in the MST, earning him a place in the MSL for the first time ever, brought tears to the eyes of many fans, according to accounts from the HERO gallery on Dcinside.
Jaehoon’s biggest wish this season is for fans to give him a cool and awesome nickname like his Khan protoss friends have.
Frozen, the basket ball player Terran by mustaju Frozen’s role in the team
STX is a team of many talents, but few very exceptional players, and a lot of streaks, both good and bad. Superficially, Frozen fits the description of the average STX player perfectly, as he has both periods of winning a lot and then failing spectacularly many times after. But why do I consider him different? Because I became a STX fan right after reading a letter written by noone other than his mother. This particular letter of advice was heart warming and I’d like to believe it exemplifies the heart of the team better than anything the players could have said themselves.I think Frozen is a huge moral support to his team, as he keeps training and practicing hard while the rest of the team might be devastated of long loss streaks. These qualities make Frozen the heart of STX SouL. And believe me, I love that team.
Frozen’s current form
Frozen is currently probably the third best Terran on STX, and this in itself should mean that he’s pretty bad, since Bogus and Classic are mediocre, and Frozen’s official win record is nothing to be proud of. But first looks can be deceptive. Did you know that in the 2010 Winter OSL Wildcard Tournament, he made it all the way to the finals, where he lost to his teammate Calm? Pfff, you might say. Those are not even official matches! But let’s look at the players he beat to get to that position. Saint, RuBy, Stats, Modesty, Baby, Neo.G_Soulkey. 4 of these players are aces on their team. Not bad, eh? Too bad that he went on a loss streak in PL shortly after, but at least he lost to really good players. Like Fantasy, Snow, and free, while taking a really good TvT game on Fortress from forGG. Although there’s much to be desired, Frozen is certainly not the autoloss many people think him to be.
Frozen’s highlights:
Frozen has few real highlights, but he has defeated strong opponents in the past. And sometimes just defeating is not enough.
...Frozen is 2-1 against Jaedong and 1-0 against Upmagic, defeating them both in a single MSL group and winning it?
...Frozen wanted to be a basketball player before becoming a StarCraft progamer?
...Frozen was 0-12 for KHAN in PL the season before he joined STX?
....Frozen carried the team through much of the Ro5 SPL 2009-2010 after the match fixing scandal ? ...that if given the chance, Frozen wants to play Neo.G_Soulkey and Bisu the most? (if you count OSL prelims and STX masters, he is 4-2!! vs. Bisu and 2-2 against Soulkey. If not, he’s 1-1 against Bisu and 0-0 against Soulkey.)
... his Korean nicknames include "Human Bonjwa", "Loss-King", "Black magic Terran" and "Roller-coaster Terran"?
You shouldn't take this as a training vod. But it has some qualities of good games, like "who does less mistakes?" I'd say Check it out, if you have time for lulz.
Humiliating. Depends who you are rooting for, I guess.

Big thanks to Ryo for helping me with the Frozen/Jaehoon writeup. Couldn't have done even my part without you, pal! Please give us feedback how you liked it!
oh yes, winners league. I'm excited about that, but a little worried too. Will Light be able to show the same kind of form like last season? WL will be crucial because there's 2 rounds of this format, it might be just what separates the top tier teams from those fighting for 5th and 6th spots.

lol, do you even play starcraft or is this a joke?
oh well, well-executed cheese. canata also got quite lucky with his correct initial scout and jaehoon's incorrect initial scout. shit happens.
i thought bogus would just sit with a bunker on jaehoon's ramp. didnt see the bunker frog leapping happening.
oooooh okay, slightly more reasonable then, haha. sorry.
you hurt my d- heart
Haha, I mean, dismissing having a bunker at the top of a ramp as jaehoon just being able to "reaver his way out" is still pretty wrong, because it would delay his expansion for a longer time if he were to wait for a reaver than if he just busted out normally.
but the thought of someone looking at Jaehoon's situation at the end and saying "just make a reaver!" completely baffled me haha
another rine joins the bunker Nat nex red - 4 goons just watching it explode...range finishes just as the nexus disappears - one tank out behind the 4 scvs repairing the bunker
sea clearing mines behind his army due to kal's shuttle flying around - it goes back to pick up more zealots Sea has almost no mine protection, but zealot bombs aren't killing tanks finally a kill after multiple zealots used on a tank
sea taking the high ground this is going to be difficult for kal
mass vult cornering a few goons and finishing them off
reaver dropped by tank!
Sea takes his 3rd at 5 as he continues to pressure
Kal micro'ing very well though - clearing out many tanks from Sea's attack still Sea has more tanks behind and more reinforcing, kals' shuttle still flying around dropping suicide zealots
Sea creeping towards Kal's 3rd - now it's in range
Sea with as single turret at 6 - kal drops his reaver there but sea already anticipating that has his tanks rolling in, destroys the reaver as it drops it did its duty!
sea already with facility, on 7o factories
kal taking a lot of mine damage as several goons wander around the map unescorted
goons vs vultures at 10.5 - observer helps the goons but sea now laying mines - taking out a lot of goons with him
probes maynarding towards th 4th? but sea's vultures are moving into position... kal taking a 5th at 12 - sea's vultures do indeed meet the mini maynard and pick off a few probes but miss the big maynard to 10.5
but 2 sieged tanks prevent the reaver at 6 from doing too much damage kal taking another base at 11? 1 no longer mining for kal, and his nat is destroyed
kal not giving up yet - still has a bunch of bases
sea's 4.5 up and running again
kal with like 6 gateways or so at 10.5?
vultures now heading that way en masse raiding the probes as they retreat from 11 - only 5 get away
An earlier GG and that game would've been fantastic. I got a little annoyed in the end. Nice manner CCs by Sea! ^__^ He looked really scary in that game.
On December 11 2010 13:50 Ryo wrote: Sea was like "WTF I cut my hair for nothing"... *rage* into triple manner CC
the first manner CC was actually quite cocky imo. The game didn't actually look completely over at that point to me. but yeah, i felt a general angry energy in sea's appearance and play today, haha.

He definitely came with an agenda today. Seeing Jaehoon lose to cheese probably added to his existing rage. Didn't matter if it wasn't Kal, I think Sea would have done the same thing.

I'm loving it. I've only begun following BW since last season and I do not know much about the players. Now I can't help but cheer for Jaehoon. What a touching story.

I was just going to lurk today, but it's worth taking the time to comment on this section. I really enjoyed the section. All too often we focus on the big names, but you're right when you say that PL is all about the "glue" players.

Yeah, Bo7's really mean that the middling players matter just as much - a big star can only score one (or sometimes two) wins and the others need to step it up
Hyun taking a 3rd at 1.5 Hyun's turn to harass mineral lines by air as his mutas attack Classic's nat
3 lurkers finish for Hyun, defiler mound starts as the hive finishes
cloaked wraiths flying around one queen out - if Hyun can land an ensnare?
speed ol's tailing the faster wraiths - ensnare MISSES! did he try to ensnare his own scourge - yes, and the scourge wasn't near the wraiths wraiths kill the queen...dang
plague on a lot of mnm, swarm/lings forrce them to retreat
more lurkers morphing in unsafe places...
defiler and 2 lurkers irradiated another plague on a 2 of 4 vessels no good to plague if you're not going to finish them off ahh here comes the mutas, scores 3 vessel kills, gets irradiated for its troubles
ultras out! irradiated as they attack the mnm - foolish
Should have seen that drop coming. Given those spawning positions and this map, zerg would be silly not to lurker-drop.
Oh well, Tiny fighting! MBC players are all late-bloomers. It was a better performance than his last match anyway. I hope he doesn't get too discouraged.
I thought that was a pretty cool game. If Tiny was able to deal a bit more damage, and he was close, he could have squeaked out a win if he was able to steam roll hero's nat. But losing those tanks must have been a dealbreaker.

Yeah, had he broken through hero's nat, it could have been an amazing win. I'm glad he didn't gg right away, rookies need to show fighting spirit.
tyson adding his 4th to 6th gates? shuttle adding his 3rd to 5th gates?
tyson with a quasi-contain outside on the left ridge one dt moving out for shuttle, spotted at the edge of an observer's vision
tyson's probe sees shuttle's probe move to 9
tyson getting a few hits on the dt - moving his entire army to try to intercept it (why) well shuttle's free to move out now tyson adding a cannon in his main
shuttle does have 2 reavers at the back to support his army tyson picks one off but it's shuttle's turn to have remaining zealots and tyson retreats shuttle storms after tyson
tyson has like a group of zealots at his rallypoint...
tyson taking a 4th at 4.5 shuttle with no 4th in sight
shuttle now rushing his army towards tyson's 4th - tyson rushing his own army to defend a great game so far - shuttle takes down a cannon and backs off from zealots and the dropped reaver
a bunch of speed zealots rushing out for shuttle - heads towards tyson's nat a fight near tyson's 3rd
almost even trade just a few zealots and goons survive
In one corner is Calm, 4-5 this season, 0-2 vs Terran, 10th on the Kespa ranking. In the other corner is Light, 7-8 this season, 4-3 vs Zerg, 8th on the Kespa ranking.
Using this greatly simplified comparison, Light's got this!
(Plus Calm ZvT vs Light's TvZ?? haha should be fun)
The placid one sends out two drones, one to scout, the other to take his natural expansion. A girl with a camera turns away when the studio's camera is turned on HER
The illuminated one chooses to go command center first.
Calm immediately starts his lair as his pool finishes, light's scv arrives to see everything
Light already mining from his nat
4 lings out to chas the scouting scv - no, they opt to beeline to light's nat instead and light's scv returns to calm's nat calm taking his 2nd gas 2 hatch muta?
Spire starts for calm - Light unable to get past the nat to see into Calm's main once again but LIght held back his 2nd scv and gets into Calm's main - sees the spire! he's getting an academy
Light with 4 turrets in his main, 1 + bunker at his nat, another building
Calm taking a huge amount of damage as he moves to the main mineral line - but light has no turret coverage there a few rines trying to corner the mutas - not enough? another muta lost
Light losing a lot of depots - but mass irradiate on the ultras and even ol's in his main most of them die pretty quickly
light moving out with a huge army down to re-establish his 3rd
so many depot wrecks
3 vessels scourged?
Calm expanding to 4, but light finds it right away, mnmnf end it ultraling trying to save the morphing hatch but light holds the ramp, all the lings die defiler irradiated quickly
lol, how much longer are those two gonna carry MBC for? They are such unsung heroes. Imagine MBC without their duo. What a bad team. Big Light fan, mos def.

Be optimistic! If you have to see it to believe it, then STX is undefeated!
Being the Proleague beast he is, Sea seems to produce on average more epic PL games than anyone else. I think it's because S-class players a cut above Sea (just Jaedong and Flash right now) tend to play a lot more really one-sided games than Sea.

MBC is not being carried by 2 players. The wins are evenly spread out among 5 players and all of them have won crucial matches for MBC.
