The WCG 2009 Grand finals will make it's first appearance in mainland China and returns to Asia after three years of absence. Due to the economic climate, this will be a smaller tournament than in previous years. However, It should be a nice small Starcraft tournament with some World-class players.
You can learn more about the WCG Grand Finals city, Chengdu in this Thread
Problems? - If you are having problems with the stream, make sure your Flash player is up to date and make sure you have to octoshape client. Still having problems? Try changing browsers, IE is a pretty safe bet, Firefox might work, Chrome probably won't
It's perfectly acceptable to call it either, I believe ROC is the more PC way of writing it. I know that the chances of someone paying for their flight from Ukraine or Poland is almost nothing, regrettably.

is jamesfoo going? imo he was pretty nice person during last wcg in germany, i hope he could win national final again..
Organizer of WCG Malaysia is pretty irresponsible. They announced 3 official games with SC included and confirmed that it will take place soon about 3 months ago. However, that also was the one and only update we've received so far. Grand Final will be held in November and I'm wondering if they really have the time to announce the venue date and get it going in time. Big Boo for 2009!
The Dutch haven't had a WCG for the past 5 years except for last year where they decided to give us a chance.. however ret didn't get out of his group last year so they think we can't win anything in Starcraft..
Looks like the WCG this year is gonna be boring as fuck anyway. What 20 players?
They don't have any money, it costs more than you would think to fly the player to China and pay WCG for the player expenses. This year is especially bad, think about the economic conditions and what companies would want to invest in outside-the-box marketing like WCG. Maybe it will be better next year (if there is WCG next year).
I think there is a misconception that the WCG finals determines who competes in the finals, but, this isn't like the Olympics. If they really wanted to, Cameroon could send 3 Starcraft players and Korea could decide to send none.

edit - happy birthday Twisted
wait, so is Croatia WCG 4th of October or November? Two people have said different things
I think I was the only one that could challenge ret a bit (I was inactive as fuck since 2005 or so but I started playing again when WCG was announced) but then they decided to host it while I was on vacation. Ret pretty much had zero competition and it's no surprise noenoe got second then I guess..
it's coz they are incompetent, lazy, stupid and so on, so on... smart ppl could find profit in something like WCG.. i mean, E-sports are present so many years and to put something like that to pass in front of you is.. urghh, can't find right insult
However as you pointed there has been some "weird" actions:
1. Guatemala has been dropped from the WCG main site, which I dont think is an "accident".
2. There were problems in the Venezuala WCG this year and they were organized by the same people that is organiinzg WCG Guatemala, the "boss" told me he got some problems and the gamers are saying on the facebook and other sites that the organizer stole the money. I dont know what happen for sure, but I am trying to find out. Apparently the day of the event there were no computers at the place and there were problems between the Dota players and the mall security (apparently there were even a fight between them)
It is September 14th, if there are going to be WCG they should be announced this month so they have 2 weeks to confirm or cancel, sadly I think the second one is what is going to be.
I'm sad that there's too few contestants. Part of the fun of WCG is seeing the Koreans just crush the hapless foreigners. There's OSL/MSL/Proleague for close games.
kawoq, thank you for your information on WCG Guatemala, I hope that somehow Guatemala can still select and send a representitive for Starcraft.
As for Costa Rica, I know it says on the TG site that gK would compete in both China and Pan-Am but I think there may be some miscommunication. Pan-Am was this weekend and he wasn't there and on the WCG CR site, it explicately mentions that only the Guitar Hero player would be competing in China and the Pan-Am.
I don't want to add him to the list until I am sure, but if he gets to go, that would be great!
If I am correct Costa Rica only took their Guitar Hero player to the Panamerican.
Now that you mention maybe I am wrong, I mean gk_tosS won the Costa Rica WCG but I am not sure if they will send the SC champ so China, maybe only the Guitar Hero one.
EDIT: you are right, Costa Rica is only sending their Guitar Hero Champ. My bad =P.
actually, is USA sending 2 players? Their press release said 20 gamers would be going from USA, but first place finishes would only account for 13 (including the two they are sending for the mobile games). I think we can assume a second CS team is going, that's still 2 more gamers, maybe Starcraft will get one of those spots. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
God WCG is more and more depressing every year. I loved WCG in the 04-07 span. It was probably the peak of excitement WCG wise. Now I don't even have expectations about WCG. When it happens, it will happen. Not holding my breath. I just hope that the day comes again when I spend the week before WCG GF all excited awaiting for the tournament to begin.
I updated the main topic, put the winner for WCG Poland, added a second spot for Russia, I'll update USA when their finals is over. Sorry about WCG in Bulgaria!
I just realised that Sen is as big a darkhorse as Pj was in that WCG that he came second, he's madd under the radar like Pj was and he's a strong gamer.

Looks like the window for a possible non korean winning it all is closing rapidly. Some of the past ones had some good outcomes with non koreans placing.

what's the best chance like idra/ra/chinese? Yeah it doesn't look good at all with those koreans players.
As I said the second was probably going to happen and it did, Guatemala WCG 2009 got cancelled... but a week ago I got a mail asking for my help with WCG but sadly Starcraft is not going to get a ticker, it will be only a FIFA tournament. not my game but I support any kind of E-Sports on my country so I am willing to help, hopefully my work will help to get a ticket next year for a Starcraft (or Starcraft II maybe)
So you can remove Guatemala from the list...sadly.... oh, it will be probably played on October 17-18.

Well, the years where non-Koreans placed usually had one or both things happen: 1. Bad seeding pit Koreans against each other early 2. Upsets in WCG Korea caused less than stellar players to get in
Usually, when Korea sends 3 really good players, they place 1-2 and sometimes even 3.
just so everyone is aware, there will be less competitors than in previous years because of the bad economy. It is likely that the tournament will be 4 groups of 7 or 8 players with 8 players (top two from each group) advancing to a single elimination tournament).
WCG seeds countries so that they won't end up in the same group unless they are the final country to be drawn. They begin the drawing with the winning country and then proceed alphabetically. So the final countries drawn will likely be Germany and Italy.
I really want to thank everyone for providing the information of the various WCGs. I'm sorry for not updating quickly.
Any additional information you can provide will be greatly appreciated
Also, sorry Kawoq that WCG Guatemala Starcraft got cancelled, that sucks
i really dont see any foreigner beat 2 players of the bisu/jd/stork lineup, not even with all the foreigner powers combined. and this is already assuming that there is a korean-only matchup in the first k.o.-round.
bisu jaedong stork, wtf, there is not the slightest hope for foreigners this year...

id say this is the best possible scenario to for a non-korean foreigner. To take 1st place from korean.
Strong StarCraft Nations. Top2 USA going IdrA, Louder Top3 Poland going ParanOid Yayba Draco Top3 China going Fengzi Toodming Pj Top2(3) maybe Russia going BRAT Bruce A2 Top2 Germany going Kolll HoRRoR Top1(2) maybe Ukraine going White-Ra DIMAGA
Not to exclude maybe these other 4 also pose a threat Fenix (Peru qualified) DinOt (Chile has yet to qualify though) Terran (Mexico qualified) Sen (Taiwan qualified)
Also would like to mention Canada should of been able to have a representative this year. They are well around one of the top and strong starcraftc nations around with players such as Testie, IefNaij, XiaOzI, TT1, Aerials, Tidy, Stalife, Oldy(^^) and the list goes on. Also another nation Netherlands with powerhouse Ret. But, yeah only if the community all were able to send Ret, IefNaij, Mondragon, F91, Lx on the side to rep for these non-korean nations.
Note: These countries need to work together, in order to accomplish such a upset.
Do Jaedong, Bisu, & Stork stand a chance or will they get knocked out by group or RO16/RO8 play?
can this possibly favor the non-korean scene? Only if 2 koreans (Jaedong, Bisu, or Stork) knock each other out in the RO16/RO8. Or can one of the non-korean knock a korean from qualifying to top16.
id say the non-koreans will be favor this year in possibly taking home the gold. This maybe these countries very last chance. Failing the first 9 years.
not as a player, the difference between ret and say, DracO is that DracO competed in his national finals while ret has had no national finals to attend. Unless (this is extremely unlikely) WCG opens an online qualification directly to the grand finals like they are doing with Trackmania, there is almost no chance that ret will be there.

Fuck yeah! Nostalgia clouding everything FTW!
I don't know how you can say this will suck hard. Oh yeah, it's just because it's not taking place four years ago. Seriously this WCG will be awesome just like the others.
no, this wcg can't be like others when there aren't so many countries like before and few countries sent less players then before (usa, russia).. there aren't spain, sweden, finland, nederland, hungary, romania, bulgaria, canada, argentina, brasil... in those countries are great players and without them it's not WORLD cyber games...
Malaysia will be sending 3 representatives this year. Our organizers have requested the players to buy the flight tickets themselves and everything else will be settled and this means we will be able to see johnrambo and cobo in the grand final!
wowow, that's unexpected, can Cobo post and say if he thinks he might be going? Or if someone has contact with him, that would be fantastic. Sorry about the slow updates, I didn't have internet for a few days. I actually knew about Kazakhstan but forgot I had posted anything.

Hi. I need some info. How much does one slot to grand finals cost, and until when a nation have to confirm the list of participants? Maybe any of the polish guys could help me (raven ..), they have experience with that

so LimbiC aka CocoA will go to the WCG Grand Finals. If anyone does not recognize the name, he is an old school American/Panamanian player that represented USA in WCG 2005 where he went 6-0 in group stage. No idea how much he has been practicing though.
Ugh. No need to keep bringing up "WCG is missing X, Y, and Z." We get it already and it sucks. Whats up with DB - is that the name the team is going by until they find a new team? Surprised to see Marine in there with the ex Fnatic squad.
A question to anyone who has qualified or anyone who knows anyone who has: Do you need to get a VISA to go to China, is it hard to get? Is there a chance that anyone won't be able to go because of that reason.
I know this is different for every question, but if you have information (if you've traveled to China, if you live in China, etc.) I would really appreciate it.
Assuming you're Canadian from your profile, you probably do but it shouldn't be too expensive (probably around $30 Canadian). I know I would've needed one had I gone but I can't make it.
If any Bulgarian is interested, BFES has said on their website that if you have the money to compete ($1000 to compete + airfare) you just need to send them an e-mail and you can compete for Bulgaria at the WCG. The cutoff date is the 18th of October though, so if you want to go, you'll have to contact them quickly. The e-mail address can be found on the WCG Bulgaria site http://www.bfes.bg/news.php?item.234.1
If anyone needs to share a room while at the WCG grand finals, let me know. There's a room available to share, the dates of the room are November 9th - 16th. The cost would be about $200, which is half for a room with 2 beds. If you get a single king bed, it costs the same, so sharing is a better option.
The room will be located in the players hotel, which is really close to the venue.

americans need visas to visit china. Canadians do too as far as i know. they cost around $60 and can be had in a week or even two days if rushed. just search chinese visa. you just send your passport and the printed application form. they mail your Pport back and voila.
This year, Starcraft will be 4 groups of 8 players, as opposed to previous years where there have been 8 groups. The top two will advance into a single elimination, best-of-3 bracket. This will be very tough for players to advance as a Korean will be in 3 of the 4 groups
But everyone plays at least 7 matches, before someone played just 2-3 matches and was already out of the tour. So I find the new system much more fun for the players. On the other hand, it demands MUCH more time to play, so its worse for admins (who cares? :D). Its kinda sad for predy, for 5 years he have been struggling to go to WCG finals and never suceeded until now, when there are no sponsor money to cover the costs... Go Crow!

I wonder what statement are they going to make if nobody takes them up on their offer. If anyone is interested, I think he'd be better off contacting the official WCG staff, since from what I've seen, BFES is dodgy as hell.
for some reason, there isn't a penalty for countries that submit slots for their country but do not send players. This should be changed as India has completely fucked up the brackets for all the games they are sending in.
It will probably not be filled with a player. I think the Bulgarian organizers wanted to give a chance to any Starcraft players that wanted to pay their way to China.
heh it's nice how countries like bulgaria offer people to pay their own way, but when I asked the netherlands organisation if I could pay my own way 1,5 month ago they took a month to reply and say 'no.'

its a pity, really, i always consider ppl from netherlands very pragmatic and i dont see any official obstacles to "pay and go" like in many other countries
It is confirmed that groupstage is best-of-1, the usual way. It is NOT confirmed that single elimination brackets is top 8 only, actually it would make no sense for this amount of players. I will let you know once I get it confirmed, but I would rather expect 4 players per group to qualify for SE finals.
And by the way, the groups are awesome - they were never so even before! The seeds were never used for draw before, correct?
Advancing from group full league to single elimination tournament • When there are 4 groups- The top 2 players (teams) will advance from each group to play in the top 8 single elimination tournament.
Bo1 confirmed then for the group stages? WIll make for some interesting upsets maybe, though remember last year when people tried to cheese the pros so hard and failed even harder.

Yeah I know but it's still to be confirmed. As far as I know the rule posted on WCG site supposed to work for the games with ~16 players only etc. For Starcraft it would make no sense. I still can be wrong here, but we need to wait for final confirmation about this one.
On October 22 2009 05:53 Beside_kr wrote: top 4, that would be pretty awesome, hope that can be the case Raven. Keep us updated!
Bad news, unfortunately top 2 is advancing to the brackets, only top 2 indeed. I'll wait for one more person to confirm this rules change, but it seems we will have only 8 players in the brackets this year.
At the other hand - well, we never had that small amount of finalists in SC:BW, so it sounds logical that our brackets were reduced to 8 as for the other smaller titles. And the groups were never so even before, most of the foreign stars qualified (it feels so bad for Ret and no Canadian representative though T_T), so I'm still expecting a lot of very entertaining games in China.
Also good thing is each player will play 7 (or 6) games at least, if we had 8 groups, that would mean 2-3 games for players who got eliminated.

Don't think it will have transmitting to Korea.
This is true, but this will be broadcasted in Korean, which is fine. But it will also be being broadcasted in English on the WCG site and QuadV
Gamesports will cast games from the Grand Final in Warcraft 3 and Counter-Strike in German. They cast via Waaagh!TV and HLTV so probably games that won't be played on the main stage. Needs Flash Player, might also need Octoshape.
The team from QuadV is doing the English commentary. They also broadcast the English videostream via their website. Just in case you are having trouble with the official WCG stream. You probably need to register at their site to use the player. Also OGN is starting to broadcast tomorrow.

Is there some kind of broadcast time error? I was trying to do the math to convert times and it doesn't make sense. Also, TL appears to list a different broadcast time than the WCG site.
Example: WCG Site: Main Stage 11/12 (GMT-5) (GMT+1) (GMT+9) Chengdu 2:30~3:00 6:30~7:00 14:30~15:00 13:30~14:00 Stork v Fengzi
TL: Main Stage 11/12 (GMT+9) 14:30 Stork v Fengzi Event Time: 13:30 KST (GMT+9)
This is all very confusing. Does anyone have an answer or the real time? Even the WCG times appear to be wrong according to each other. GMT+9 = 15:00 while GMT-5 = 3:00??
That appears to be a 14 hour difference, not a 12 hour difference. Even with daylight savings time this doesn't make sense....
It has the schedule for the official WCG stream with four different timezones. I guess you will be able to figure this out. I wouldn't be surprised if TL has this wrong somewhere. TeamLiquid uses KST - Seoul time.
WOW there are so many games being broadcasted! Last year there were like 4 group gaes and this year there are like 20. Someone please use livestream to save the "second stage" games on demand, since I sort of doubt that there will be VODs released of those.
The surprise of the day was when Ramah Nyang (KTN), who was emceeing the event could not help but indulge in his favourite past time, and contrary to his expectation, won in the Star Craft game.

From an article about Kenya WCG quals
He couldn't go, he was replaced by the person who took second
There is no way the second stage will be commentated in English (unless someone wants to open up a stream and commentate) as the games overlap with the main stage and expecting Tasteless + Artosis to cast that many games would be unreasonable. Still though, we get to see the games live, which is pretty dope.
There is a rule that prevents players from the same nation competing in the same group unless it cannot be helped, also, starting this year, 8 players were seeded including the Koreans and IdrA, however, this did not stop IdrA from drawing a group with Koreans in it and it is the luck of the draw that he avoided them.
NonY has gone back to University, he did not attempt to qualify WCG USA. He is, however, playing for Duke's CSL team
that doesn't make sense Jyvblamo, because the first place in a group would play the second place in another. If they all won their groups, they wouldn't have to play each other until the Semi-finals

Sen won his game against Brat_ok so even though they both got a record of 4-2, Sen got the head-to-head advantage.
Unless Bisu is gonna try to cheese and somehow fail at it (even so it's very unlikely), I don't think he will be even close to dropping a game. Bisu just needs to play standard and he can basically beat most foreigners in his group with the first goon/lot push.
Jeez, I thought the games already started when I saw Bisu got 1-0 on the OP. Then I saw the absent player and be like "phew.."

No, he isn't. He will face them, if he comes in second. The only chance for him to avoid them is to finish first in his group
who is another guy with tasteless? he loves to give titles to players, and he gives it very easy.. when he spoke about jaedong he said: best player of all time... when he spoke about bisu he said: best toss of all time..
lol, sorry guys, I fell asleep last night and wasn't able to update until now. I always hate those poeple that make a topic and then don't update it, so yeah, I suck.
Coming from a bisu fanboy, i have to give it to Jaedong, he really really outplayed Bisu. But Bisu wasn't necessarily playing bad, just unlucky
His matchup vs stork, I felt like both of them weren't playing in their top form. I mean, for once DT's were actually able to kill drones in a PvZ game! Sloppy on both sides, but still intense. I'm still wondering why Stork went sair/reaver on destination. Had it been on outsider, I'm sure he would have had a MUCH better chance, and possibly a different outcome.
It pains me to say it, but I think Bisu has lost his crown as PvZ emperor. With the exception of his All-star match against Jaedong, his form has been very poor.

Honestly, if Stork can practice a bit more and improve decision-making, he (is imo) will be the King of PvZ. Now if he can just beat Bisu in PvP he will dominate in all three matchups...
I would say that right now Stork is playing better than Bisu on PvT and PvZ and, besides that, is pretty close to Bisu in PvP. So, really, who is the number 1 Protoss? Stork is. This probably is going to change as soon as Bisu raises the level of his game again, though.

Gotta agree, he played extremly well vs JD. So much good harass, shame he attacked and lost his army fairly fast on Tau Cross.
