Probability of being a champion given you listen to music = P(C|M) Probability of listening to music given you are a champion = P(M|C) Base rate of listening to music = P(M) = approximately 0.99 Base rate of being a champion = P(C) = approximately 0.01 By Bayes' Theorem: P(C|M)=[P(M|C)*P(C)]/P(M)=[P(M|C)*0.01]/0.99~0.011*P(M|C) Therefore, even if the probability of listening to music given that you are a champion is 1, that is, every champion listens to music, the probability that YOU will be a champion given that you listen to music is still no greater than 1%. Unless you want to ignore the fact that being a champion is so unbelievably improbable.  | ||

A swedish news-program actually tried this in a swedish elite-swimmer. They let her warm up with what would classify as a great song, melodywise, and then let her do a lap with the music playing, she actually beat her personal best. So music does matter. Same goes for when driving a car, if you have calm music on you drive less agressive then if you have say metal playing. | ||

That said, the real secret to success is insanely long and inhuman arms. Phelps is a freak of nature who's only purpose in life was to swim down the length of an Olympic pool. + Show Spoiler + Okay, it took a tonne of dedication too, and I'm sure he's got other talents, but god damn. | ||
