In celebration of the 20th anniversary of StarCraft, Blizzard Entertainment is launching the Korea StarCraft League (KSL).
This StarCraft: Remastered competition is open to all players and designed to provide the ultimate fan experience.

“Korea StarCraft League represents Blizzard’s commitment to StarCraft and its fans all over the world, who continue playing, watching, and enjoying the game. We are thrilled to announce a brand new StarCraft league based out of Seoul, a city that lives and breathes esports,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Last year, we upgraded the classic strategy game with StarCraft: Remastered, and this year, we look forward to the best players in the world competing in the KSL.”

Press Release: https://blizzard.gamespress.com/en-AU/Blizzard-Entertainment-Announces-Korea-StarCraft-League-98523

Further details not mentioned on the website/official press release:

Casters (KR): KCM, ZeuS, trOt
Casters (EN): Tasteless, Artosis

According to Blizzard Korea's Kook Ki-bong (TheBOy), this will not clash/replace the ASL and serves as an additional tournament for SC:R players in Korea. This is backed up with broadcast times being on Thursday and Friday nights.

1. KSL will be held twice a year.
2. Total prize pool for the entire year surmounts to ₩160,000,000 (₩80,000,000 per season is almost OGN StarLeague level)
3. Best-of-seven format for the semi-finals and finals

Great news. Hopefully this will spark some much needed motivation for the ex-professionals, and maybe even the influx of new talent.

Blizzard, thank you so much for this. You have redeemed yourself in my humble opinion. I just think it's a shame Bisu isn't around to compete at this time. Also, I hope this makes FanTaSy reconsider his choice to play SC2 fresh out of the army. I like how the tournament is open to all players so even foreigners have a chance to win. Good luck to everyone that plays!

Ah shit. There always has to be a catch. Hopefully there won't be too much bullshit politics between the parties involved leading to the destabilization of the current ecosystem.

This is perfect while waiting for ASL 6!!!

Wow what's even more perfect is this will be held twice a year and be a backup for ASL! And games on Thursday and Friday. So that's potentially 4 nights of Starcraft per week!!!

Surely it cant mean that they play the whole group in one day? We cannot be expected to sit and watch starcraft for something like 8 hours straight or have commentators last that long. The ro16 is also scheduled for a whole month so unless we're going to have only one broadcast per week, these groups will be split into multiple matchdays.

Oh yeah that makes a lot of sense, there is no way they could do it in one sitting :D

schedule will probably be split to 5 days with 4 Bo5s.

Day 1 for game 1(A,B,C,D).
Day 2 for game 2(A,B,C,D).
Day 3 for Winners(A,B,C,D)
Day 4 for Losers(A,B,C,D)
Day 5 for Final(A,B,C,D)

or you know do 2 Bo5s over 10 broadcast days to cover the whole month's schedule.

I think about round 16:

Game 1
Day 1: Grp A, B, C, D
Day 2: Grp A, B, C, D
Day 3: Grp A, B
Day 4: Grp C, D

Game 2, winners' and losers' match are the same Game 1
We need 12 days more.

Final
Last day.

Total: 17 days for Round 16, it is exactly 2 months, every weeks has 2 days to compete.

Or
Game 1
Day 1: Grp A, B (every group will play 2 sets)
Day 2: Grp C, D (every group will play 2 sets)
Day 3: Grp A, B (every group will play from 1 to 3 sets)
Day 4: Grp C, D (every group will play from 1 to 3 sets)

Note:

So most korean pros won’t attend online qualifiers, good opportunity for amateurs.

So if a foreign player qualifies via the online tournament they have 1-3 days to fly to the offline event?

Foreigners can use the online qualis as a practice tool but realistically that's all it is to us, oh well i guess it's better than nothing.

if any of the top foreigners were actually serious in participating, i'm sure blizzard would waiver those who fly to korea straight into the offline portion of the qualifier.

edit: i wonder why they decided on such a random figure of 24,000,000 KRW total prize pool as the measure for whether you can get a seed into the offline qualifiers. the largest foreigner tournament so far in the past 5 years was the zotac masters, and that was 20k USD (so 22m krw'ish)

Great news, hope it does really well and keeps professional BW going for a long time!

Let's see a Blizzard wc3 league next .
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Unfortunately, some korean will complain even if it's TR20.

They'll pinpoint the lag to the foreigner, and just DQ the foreigner. It's a subtle way to simply say "koreans only"

That’s the plan.

that is also my plan, except i have no idea how that will work out.
my shortest flight time from germany to seoul is 15 hours + 4 hours time i need to get to airport/be at airport early enough.
no exact times when the 2nd qualifier round on the 29th will be and i basically have book the ticket and go to the airport right after i qualified.
these flights with a shorter total flight time cost 1000€ upwards on that specific day. (from what i was currently able to check)
and hope that the plane starts at the correct time.... because all i see is start time after noon and arrival around noon the next day, how can i play the morning offline group then....

my only other option would be to cancel my (last month booked) return flight from tokyo on monday 25th, play the online tournament in tokyo and fly from tokyo to seoul on the 30th in case i qualify. (or fly few days earlier and play online quali in seoul)

im serious in participating but the tight online - offline schedule makes it really hard.
idk if i count as a top foreigner, but being able to directly play in the offline quali would make it waaay easier to arrange stuff.

right now i cant say with certainty if im able to attend it. i first have to check with my boss tomorrow if i can take the required days off.

edit: after thinking a little more about it, germany - tokyo - seoul is prefered for me, but need to ask boss first....

Since it's an international event then why the foreigner should be considered the one responsible for the lag ?

Unit Limits: Extended

That means unlimited control groups, doesn't it? I guess that's a mistake then.

No, ofcourse not asl is on afreeca ksl is on twitch , the pro streamers stream on afreeca hence close bond with korean viewers & asl it won’t replace that Koreans prefer afreeca over twitch

Hope this tournament will have different results then ASL.
If the maps are normal Flash is likely to win as shown by his insane streak off ASL wins, if the KSL and ASL only do "standard" maps then I think it will be Flash in 2 Finals in different Tournaments which will become stale after sometime.

Anyway this is good news for people that want to see more BW.

Furthermore

3.3 (d) Individuals who cannot participate in the live broadcasted portion of KSL Main Stage, which will be held after the qualifiers, cannot participate in the KSL.

this indeed is basically ruling out any Foreigner. Except you are willing to stay in Korea (NoRegret Gaming House, go!)
But i dont know what will be sufficient proof for them and what not.

the official contact adress according to 4.3 (g) is KSLinfo@panoramaent.com

but i dont see any chance for any foreigner to have a shot, independent of the skill level.

Really excited about the tournament! I hope Blizzard will reconsider bo7 going into next season. In my opinion, bo7 series tend to be a lot less exciting than bo5, and there is sufficiently small variance in bo5 format that more games are not needed. I think I'm probably in the minority here, but I find bo5 series way more fun to watch.

We have 10 days for the round 16.

July 19 - August 17 (Every Thursday and Friday, 7:00 PM KST).

Maximum count of games have to play is 100 games (with BO5 every matches).

Every day, we have 10 games (if 2 matches even need 5th game).

I guess:

Day 1:
Group A: Match 1, match 2

Day 2:
Group B: Match 1, match 2

Day 3:
Group C: Match 1, match 2

Day 4:
Group D: Match 1, match 2

Day 5:
Group A: Winners' match, Losers' match

Day 6:
Group B: Winners' match, Losers' match

Day 7:
Group C: Winners' match, Losers' match

Day 8:
Group D: Winners' match, Losers' match

Day 9:
Final: Group A, Group B

Day 10:
Final: Group C, Group D.

Wow. Somehow I managed to scroll past this yesterday without reading. I have no questions to ask other than "can we skip through the rest of june already". Bo5s and Bo7s for the finals, holy shit this is gonna be great. A full 7 match TvT in BW is going to be a hand-destroying millstone that grinds out the wheat from the chaff of pro terrans, get the ice-packs ready.

The glorious return of multiple concurrent leagues, turns out this WAS the best timeline.

EDIT:

I was just looking at the schedule and this has me confused

Round of 8
Format: Single Elimination, Best of 5
Schedule: August 23 (Thu) - 24 (Fri), 7:00 PM KST

The Ro8 is set to happen over two nights, does this mean we'll have 4 players playing each night, so 6-10 games total? That's going to be a serious BW marathon.

Soooo. Two starleagues and a Pro league trying it's wings.

We'll see where it all goes, how serious Blizzard is with this long time but hopefully they'll mainly just leave organizing it to the koreans who know the scene.

And maybe the Pro league will keep on developing, if there's a lot of interest it could be picked up and put on stage.

Not my chair. Not my problem. That's what I say

Does anyone have access to downloads of this map pool?

To my knowledge 2 maps are difficult to find: "Polaris Rhapsody" and "Fortress SE." The other maps are on Frontier League/Battle.net Ladder...

I found "Polaris Rhapsody 1.0" here ...on the ICC c iccup.com

but disappointed that the team Liquid download link for the map is broken.

www.teamliquid.net

The Fortress SE Map is no where to found on the internet. By internet I mean a pretty thorough Google Search.

Any advise on acquiring this map pool?

Keeping Fighting Spirit around forever is going to stunt the meta at the pro level. It's good that it's going from there, but it is a good map to practice on.

actually quite the opposite seeing flash kicked out of ASL on solely the map pool (transister and third world) on transister he made an agressive play to avoid late game pvt cause its litterly #$%! on that map..
the maps where fun but designed to keep flash out of the finals and other terrans didn make it far aswell
i would love to see some non crazy more balanced maps and sparkle can was fun for a bit but really no zerg wants to ever play on it again.

Yeah, thats why Fighting Spirit fills up the entire custom game list, because people are just sick of this map

Playing on it and watching pros play on it can be two separate things lol.

Imagine Bo7 TvT lol

Looking forward to this though.

Bo7 seems way to much for Brood war. I would never go past 5 matches for a brood war match. Some BW matches can go for a very long time.

Best of Five is the way to go. Has worked well for ASL so far.

Still amazed every time BW fans off-hand dismiss something just because it's different. BW is default dead (and I say this as someone who loves the game as much as anyone). We should embrace all reasonable experiments! The potential reward of stumbling upon something that revitalizes interest vastly outweighs the risk. Who knows, maybe something interesting happens in a BO7 context (like a super reverse sweep) that creates a bunch of positive press? BO7 is far from the craziest thing the scene should be trying.

Even for those saying "imagine TvT BO7" -- ever watched a triple overtime game in the NBA? It's not pretty but has its own charm once in awhile. Plus, modern TvT is usually extremely dynamic and action packed.

More games, more types of crazy maps (especially since players are no longer dependent on league performance to make money, so balance is less important), more experiments, more Brood War of all kinds, are all good things.

Maybe learn your history before dismissing BW fans. It is not that we don't like it because it is different but because we already had that experiment in the old pro days and also in the Sonic days and it always got rolled back because the cons simply outweigh the pros.

i think b07 gives room for some cheezy plays, in a bo5 you pretty much have 0 room for error if you drop a game trying a cheeze

ahhh. what a bummer. Well Savior would have been destroyed anyway, Shinee easily defeated him 3-0 in a Chinese Starcraft tournament

A triple overtime in the NBA is not something you go in expecting it to happen though. The time duration part of the analogy is good but for it to fit you need to have a set number of overtimes to play; like there are at least 4 games in a Bo7 series.

That said, I didn't say I don't want Bo7, in fact I even said I was looking forward to it (even though I prefer a Bo5 series.)

BO7 will present new opportunities for series strategy, endurance might become a factor. I think we'll be seeing more cheese in opening matches, for instance.

There's a threshold though where more starcraft won't mean more spectacular games but the opposite. Especially since most ex-pros don't have a rigorous training schedule anymore so it'll have to be seen if they have it in them to make necessary preparations.

based on what?

i dont think so players will play more strategic &mind games if someone pulls a 4 pool vs flash (remember zero v flash )
that is pretty spectaculair.
(edit in post kespa ive seen plenty of times in ssl & asl that specific map builds & cheeses are still prepaired ) last one was shine with his bag of builds

I've been watching since 2006. I never watched or played any SC2. I remember matches like Larva vs Killer bo7 Sonic finals. But keep making assumptions, please.

Yes I wouldn't choose bo7 by default, but the amount of complaining about this one thing is excessive.

No they're not lol. Before the transition, the last finals that used a Bo7 format was the 2004-2005 YatGK MSL if memory serves me right. (One great finals, GoRush vs NaDa)

For the whole Fighting Spirit subject, it'd be nice if they brought back the map while putting a new twist on it, let's Reverse Fighting Spirit where high ground now becomes low ground.

The new maps, especially Third World, was the highlight of the last ASL (even though many hated it), there has to be a breath of fresh air coming into the competitive scene, maps are the best way to shake things up a bit.

The only reason Third World, Transistor, and Sparkle made it into the ASL was to prevent Flash from winning his 4th ASL in a row. I reckon similar measures might need to be taken down the line, but having standard maps for a change is good.

sure i think the maps where highly creative and even fun (however if you watched every late game T v P on transister & thirdworld of Flash practice matchs you can come up with only one conclusion it it total horror for Terrans carriers are unstoppable duo to the layouts on the semi- island map you did have to start splitting youre army up using dropships just to be able to attack on the other side of the map on transister you would have the hardest time to get a decent attack angle bcause of th bottlenecks and highgrounds (you just cant get close enough) and than you add arbiter & recall stasis in the mix on third world ... that main choke its nearly impossible to move up the choke since only 1 unit can fit through it at the time i can go on and on about the uphill battles terrans would face in late game.

in short those are broken maps. and have no place to stay around unless as said before you want to get terrans kicked out of tournaments that was the design.

Innovation won't be in korea for the offline qualifiers, same for fantasy. They are both competing at hsc:

BO7 is better competitively, but the 'tradition' of Brood War is that stupid variance has always been baked into the competition by organizers. It's dumb, but it's one of the rare cases I prefer dumb tradition over objectively improving something (god I sound like a 60+ year old baseball fan).

Thank god. Blizzard please act on both of these initiatives, or continue doing so. Best of 7 is definitely better particularly for such important matches as semis and finals.

Also consider a best of 9 series for something, just to see how much people will whine about that.

There's an argument for the players been better prepared for the maps with a best of 5. Having a build ready for every map. I know it’s only another 2 maps. But I would guess the main reason best of 5 is consider more preferable is that it's just plain embarrassing for a professional in the latter stage of a tournament to get stomped 0:4. Losing face is big thing in Korean culture.

Good point, Greg_J. If the match is competitive, I'd prefer to see a Bo7. If it's a walkover, I'd rather see it end 3-0 quickly in a Bo5.

Overall I'm happy that they're experimenting with Bo7s, as most matches should be competitive once you get to the higher brackets, and having more games reduces nerves as a factor (maybe?). Most of all I want the progamers to be comfortable and in the zone.

I feel Bo7 is very risky in terms of stamina affecting players negatively... I prefer Bo5 (5 different maps).

Can you imagine playing 7 super intense 1v1s without breaks? Should allow for a break after game 5 or 6, right?

I figured people are talking about whether it should be bo5 or bo7, and I think we should stick to bo5 because bo7 is too much for players to keep up stamina, and old days were bo5. We should accept that like its culture.

On the other side, I see people are talking about maps too, and I want to jump into that conversation as well.
My example would be like this.
Brought 2 popular maps from the previous league: Fighting Spirit, Circuit Breakers
4 new maps: Third World, Transistor, Sparkle, Crossing Fields
There will be total 6 maps, winner from the coin flip gets a chance to ban one of the new maps and chooses the new map that will be played twice(1st and 5th game), and loser bans the previous league map(remaining one will be played in the 3rd game).

Player A vs Player B
Player B won the flip coin, banned Transistor and chose Crossing Fields for 1st and 5th game, Player A banned Circuit Breakers
So the series would be like: Crossing Fields, Third World, Fighting Spirit, Sparkle, Crossing Fields.

Or we can do vice versa. Winner bans 1 previous map and other previous map will repeat twice, loser bans one of the new maps.
But I feel winner banning the previous map doesn't give any advantage so I prefer the first one that I explained.

More games is always better, and fighting spirit is an awesome map. Wow, just wow! hyyype

If these guys used to practice 15 hours a day, I'm sure they have enough stamina to play a bo7.

Yeah, I'm definitely stoked for a Bo7 finals. I don't really buy the "better prepared for the maps" argument for bo5s, since they'd be playing on the same set of maps that'd been used for the whole tournament thus far (and also practicing on the whole time) anyways. If they've gotten to the finals, they know how to play to the strengths and weaknesses of the maps. Finalists having clearly prepared builds for every map is fun to watch, but it's also fun to watch them wing it and come up with strategies on the fly. Also, I'm sure that there'd be a repeat map or two in there, as there's already usually a repeat map in bo5 series if it goes long enough.

The "not enough stamina" argument is more realistic, but again, these dudes play all day erry day anyways, and having the stamina and focus to stay sharp throughout the course of a potentially grueling series is part of the competition imo. Plus, there's usually a commercial break or two for these longer series, so I'm sure the players would be able to stand up and stretch for a few minutes if they needed to.

I think the best argument against Bo7 finals is that it'd make it easier for Flash, especially on this more standard map pool.

But yeah, doubt they're gonna change it at this point, so I'm just excited for more BW to watch.

As Said before it has not always been bo5s bo7 was used also for finals

What I also like about the bo7s is that If a wins on that map that favours their race there should be more oppertunities in maps to even that score out ( like how you are against the ropes If you lose 1 cheese game than lose game 2 on that map you wanted to veto out or something but could not and you have to play flawless standart from there pretty much cause thats matchpoint 3-0 and youre out.

I heard Flash say he won't be playing in the KSL. I hope I misheard. I could have...it was noisy when I heard it. Confirmations?

From the looks of it, a fair few of the ex-professionals will not be participating (herO, EffOrt, Jaedong, and Flash).

I'd rather relay the message from the official announcements from the players themselves, rather than trying to put words in their mouths with my own personal interpretation of what is going on. Just wait a little for the official statements from the players themselves, and perhaps some might even change their minds (impossible for herO, who has imminent military service).

^ losing Flash would be a huge blow to the legitimacy of this tournament. Same for hero though he's leaving for military soon. We all know that neither EffOrt or Jaedong will make it past Ro16 so ...

While I think this and some of the other blizz tourneys are a cool initiative and really appreciated, I think we as a community should be extremely cautious and taper our enthusiasm until we see how Blizzard plans to run these tournaments. They are still a company after all and BW history isn't so old that the past can be easily forgotten. Regardless, here's to hoping that Blizzard can make up for their past actions and KSL as flawlessly as possible for years to come!

bo7 will be too much of a burnout? but at the same time more games and no guaranteed quick finals like snow vs rain..

also please remove FS omg we have had new maps introduced! keep them alive by keeping them in the new tournaments..

Flash not participating in this would do a lot of harm to the prestige of the tournament. Hopefully Blizz can get in touch with those players or something.

Flash and Jaedong have apparently said that the KSL conflicts with a Chinese event that they have committed to appearing in...but no one seems to know what event that is. Very strange. It seems that Blizzard would have to work things out with the organizers of this mysterious Chinese event if that is the case.

Larva (also an Afreeca partner) is playing in the KSL, so I assume this means that this isn't an Afreeca issue?

Wow, I hope this gets fixed because not having the best player in the world and a fan favorite like Jaedong would really suck.

I'm ok with Bo7 but I can see how player stamina might be a issue if all the games are 25+ minutes...but that should be super rare. I'm just glad to watch a tournament that is different from the Bo1/double elimination format in ASL which has gotten a little stale for me.

I don't agree with this general tone where people think it's obvious that Blizzard has this long history of wrongdoing to "atone" for.

They were clearly in the right regarding the broadcast rights dispute with KeSPA. Remember, KeSPA basically ceded total defeat. Blizzard's claims regarding their IP rights is basically the undisputed industry standard today with every broadcaster, production company, and game publisher. Unless you hold very radical views about intellectual property in general, across every field and industry, then you can't fault Blizzard there.

I think BW fans want to believe that it was Blizzard who forced KeSPA to switch StarCraft II after the IP dispute ended in 2012. However, it could just as easily be claimed that KeSPA was making a desperate move to try and keep StarCraft esports going. However, there's basically no credible reporting regarding what went on behind the scenes, so it's just speculation either way.

The credible grievance is the supposed $100,000 licensing fee Blizzard charged AfreecaTV to hold ASL, as claimed by AfreecaTV. This sounded absolutely ludicrous to me at the onset, but after hearing mixed accounts from people in the scene, I've become more willing to give it some credence. As far as Blizzard refuses to squash the claim publicly, then BW fans are entitled to crush them for it.

[Ofc if you're not just talking about esports, and pointing out SC:R and its bugs and lack of features, then I'll step out of the way]

I think we should start a petition to make Blizzard accommodate Flash. He will apparently be returning from his China trip on July 1. Even Afreeca has adjusted offline qualifier schedules on the fly in the past. This isn't exactly the same as rescheduling the main matches.

It would be ridiculous for a new era of BW to begin with its greatest player missing in action. I know we shouldn't make exceptions for players but this is an exceptional circumstance.

EDIT: FWIW, Flash said that he really wants to play in the KSL but cannot because he made this commitment a long time ago. He said he's been warned to keep the details of the China event secret but video will be uploaded to his YouTube channel afterwards per their agreement. I have seen one baseless rumor claiming that it's a Chinese government event but there was nothing to support that claim.

After Blizzard had all other possible recourses shut down, yes, it could be argued that KeSPA alone came to the conclusion that professional Brood War was no longer worth persuing. However, if you are being intellectually honest, and have read all the official announcements from KeSPA before Blizzard broke them down, it is clear as daylight that Brood War was by far the main point of focus for KeSPA, and they clearly expressed having zero intentions of scraping everything for a gaming product that had utterly failed to captivate the Korean gaming community by large at the time of the switch.

The entire professional Brood War scene came about due to a blatant disregard for those intellectual property right laws you hold dear. Almost everything that we discuss today on these forums, are derived from content from people who were involved heavily in unauthorized activity that we called the Brood War e-Sports scene. The way you emphasize how Blizzard will forever be immune from all criticism due to the legalities make it sound like you couldn't wait for the legal wrong to be corrected, because who cares about competitive Brood War except for those delusional Brood War fans, right?

It is an irrefutable fact that professional Brood War wouldn't have ended in 2012 in such a ham-fisted manner without Blizzard's involvement with the industry at the time. Perhaps a legal wrong that went on for over a decade was corrected, but at what cost? It was a Pyrrhic victory if I ever saw one. If anything, it was Riot Gaming that benefitted the most from Blizzard's heavy involvement with the Korean e-Sports scene, not KeSPa, not the fans of Brood War, and not even Blizzard themselves.

Considering the colossal level of fuck-ups Blizzard has been responsible for in the past, a little apprehension is to be expected, really.

Is that really a fact? Given the state of Kespa is right now, and the state of esports sponsorships being completely stagnant in Korea across all titles, I don't think it would have lasted much longer after that.

What? Are you trying to argue that the professional Brood War scene would have gone off air entirely by 2012 with all the professional Brood War teams liquidated even without Blizzard's intervention?

Even with Blizzard's lawsuit versus both broadcasting studios in 2010 that eventually ended in the shutting down of MBC Game Studios, KeSPA's dramatic change in their policies, the entire industry falling under disrepute due to the ongoing lawsuits, Ongamenet's last ever StarLeague topped the charts for its intended demographic of young Korean males.

In fact, the scene survived solely due to the fans who never wanted Brood War gone. Sure professional Brood War probably would have lost its prime time slot to League of Legends (not being the number one e-Sports is vastly different from being non-existent), but if a deadweight professional scene like Starcraft 2 (in terms of domestic viability) survived this long, there is no logical method of explaning how professional Brood War abruptly would have vanished without Blizzard's intervention. Go on. Try to be specific and reason with me how such a scenario would have happened.

Maybe not 2012, but not much longer, given the state of esports sponsorships now, even in the esports of the most popular game in the world. Keep in mind, OGN had a license to run a BW league in 2014 and didnt do anything with it.

Then my statement stands. There is a huge difference between struggling financially and no longer being the big dog, and being gone altogether. How does Ongamenet choosing not to rejuvenate a dead scene that already had the vast majority of its prior professionals playing another gaming title prove anything? Were you expecting them to create new teams to lure players back years after the switch had been forcibly made?

There are people in this thread that should know the facts better than I do, but didn't the OSL already struggle quite hard with finding sponsors?

I would honestly doubt that even if SC2 hadn't been released, BW wouldn't have had a massive decline from 2013 onwards.
The harder it becomes, the more you should focus on the basics.

I think my point was more along the lines if, if the TOP DOG, the most popular game in the world, is struggling, teams are dropping like flies, then how much hope/room was there for Starcraft? And OnGameNet didnt need to create new teams to run a league, that's Kespa's prerogative. All OGN had to do was run the league, but they couldn't. Similar to Afreeca.

And the scene was only gone for 1 year for that opportunity, and they opted not to. There is/was serious sponsorship problems around that time, and its still lingering to this day.

That's a very skewed way of stating it, trying to attach malice to happenstance. Blizzard happened to make StarCraft II, KeSPA happened to start a ill-advised IP dispute in 2007, and things played out in a certain way. None of the parties do this with the intent that KeSPA backed Brood War dies in 2012. I know people want to arrive at the conclusion of "Blizzard wanted to kill Brood War" very badly, but it's not so simple.

Anyway I feel like I've let this go way off-topic for no reason so I'll just stop here (sorry for derailing when I keep telling ppl not to derail). Some people believe that every move not done solely in the interest of KeSPA Brood War was a bad move (it's one of the biggest "single-issue voter" things on TL), and if you're a hardcore Korean BW fan, I can sorta understand why you would feel that way.

For the both of you.

Even if your family member was suffering from terminal illness, it does not mean that it is just for a society to treat him in any manner they see fit until he "happens" to die then proceed to deny all charges citing a lack of medical evidence, or just telling the family to "move on" and know their goddamned place in the world.

This fixation upon the exact detailing of the intentions from Blizzard for their actions, and the sorry state of the scene in general (much of which was brought about due to the law suits in the first place), to excuse Blizzard from any responsibility makes it sound like you are both Blizzard fans over Brood War fans.

If you see an distraught family member disheartened from a loss of a loved one, the last thing you should do is taunt the guy about how imminent the desmise was anyways, and trivializing his desperation to have a few more years together to the very bitter end with someone he has grown to love more than anything. You seem to care more about the wording with which I present the facts, in that it could shed Blizzard in a negative light, than give any pause to think about the magnitude of the actual catastrophe that took place (just because you don't mind it being gone so much, doesn't mean others felt the same).

What about all the unfinished narratives? Did FanTaSy truly usurp Flash as the number one terran player? What about JangBi, would we see more of the fantastic form he displayed towards the end of professional Brood War? Would Bisu break free from his three year individual league drought? Who would become the next great players? Where were the new bloods such as hydra, Soulkey, BoGus, and By.Sun going to end up?

Instead we are here talking about random female streamers and rejoicing the creation of a new league that doesn't even have all of the limited talent pool we have participating. It's all good, but I would throw it all away without a moments hesitation to have that couple of years (in line with the very conservative estimations) of the professional Brood War scene that was taken away from me. Just like Blizzard had zero hesitation about persuing their goals, even if it resulted in the premature demise of the entire professional Brood War scene. Don't trivialize it.

Just to get this thread back on track...Flash will miss the offline qualifiers by 12 hours at most. Do we really want 12 hours to be what keeps Flash out of the first KSL? Remember that he will eventually have to serve in the military. This is a major tournament that we will never get back.

Considering the colossal level of fuck-ups Blizzard has been responsible for in the past, a little apprehension is to be expected, really.

pretty much what I was trying to say. Folks are free to celebrate this and all, it's good news for sure, but I'm cautiously optimistic about what this means for the scene and how it will effect everything, including ASL.

I hope Blizzard learns from their mistakes with trying to steer everyone to SC2 (which in my personal opinion is part of why we lost KeSPA) and simply launches this tournament in a vacuum, with a "live and let live" approach to the smaller independent tournaments. As they said, this won't interfere with ASL. So hopefully they won't go headhunting for those $500 pot low level tournies.

What a joke... The /whereis command is broken between regions and the admins were unresponsive. Basically all the foreigners (except eon) were DQ'd while sitting in the KSL channel.

Should have kept my expectations in check considering the entire prize pool is basically afreeca's fee paid for ASL5.

All while blizz dumps Millions$ into a dying SC2 that can barely be given away. Very disappointing.

So you’d better book air ticket to Seoul on 6/30 now :-) Will be a tough day, then play PC Bang qualifiers on 7/1 against Flash/JD/Best/etc with heavy jet lag @@

SkilfulQuail lost to PallTiger in Round#2.
So PallTiger will play Round#3 against ChangWonGosu tomorrow, whose mmr is 1700.

Europe
SkilfulQuail

Terran 3 18

Korea
palltiger
1709
Zerg 36 26

Korea
ChangWonGosu
1742
Zerg 17 11

So MMR 1700 is ok for offline qualifiers lol.

Looking at the bracket it seems like 90% of the games are Walk Overs (W.O). So the admins are just picking who goes to the offline qualifiers I guess.

Artosis also qualified to the offline qualifiers.

I ran into a page that shows the location of offline qualifiers, but I cant find it again (so want to check).
The location shown was in Hongdae (like 3m away from the place where I'm staying).

Anyone know how is offline qualifier organized for life viewing, if at all?

oh, bugger, that puts a bit of a downer on the whole affair :S

though, on the other hand, i suppose someone else winning a starleague whilst not having to rely on map imbalances is a good thing

Did Shine make it? If you loose in group finals, does it mean you are out for good? I'm kinda sad Larva is already out.

How can Rush vs Organ be casted live on EN stream? This match is already played according to the brackets...
Or they're casting from replays?

Jatjuly had some pretty good decision making in that series vs Cadenza earlier

then he did this weird drone drill against Best for some reason

Edit: he must have a crazy case of nerves being up against best because he's doing some weird things

Yeah I realized he was BeaSt after the game ended.

It's weird I always liked him a lot when I saw him play but he seemed to be playing kinda off there

Anyway it seems like the 16 are:

Protoss: Shuttle, Movie, Snow, Horang2, Mini, Rain, Stork, Best (8)
Terran: Light, Last, Sharp, Mind
Zerg: JD, Soulkey, Shine

And then the winner of liquid.herO and Sea

Well JD almost got schooled (was down 0/2 in best of five) by a 2700 MMR protos player.
And those were straight up wins, no cheese.

I’m a Protoss player and a Protoss fan. I hope to see a Protoss in the finals.

But I think, for the first time ever, I don’t want to see a Protoss win. Jaedong will be going in to the military before the end of next January, and his body is destroyed. I want to see the Tyrant dominate once more.

Great lineup! It's a bit sad that Flash is not playing, though. Is it a question of sponsorships? Does he have a contract with AfreecaTV? It's hard to imagine that he's just got better things to do...

It feels a bit like that time when Garry Kasparov boycotted the chess world championship, so every year a new chess world champion was crowned but everyone knew Kasparov could probably beat him.

Insane qualifier, watched it all on VOD. Reminded me of the old OSL/MSL qualifiers. Really good work by Tastosis, can't wait to see the rest of the tournament even though I'm a bit disappointed that no new players made it through.

Also really excited about a new tournament map especially since it's created by a foreigner

First time in a long time i could sit and watch bw for 13+ hours. Very interesting to finally see a tournament go live through the qualifier period, amateurs and people who play tons vs the pros. Great games and insane how 2700+mmr amounts to the pros. Loved it.

Awesome, thanks for the VODs! Was looking for those.

Considering that players like Horang2 and Movie qualified while Larva and Hero failed to qualify, and Jaedong nearly got knocked out by a completely unknown Protoss, is the map pool a bit Protoss-favoured? Or maybe not so good for Zerg?

Well I think whats more reasonable is just to assume they would tell the top brass of progamers ahead of time, which I guess im naive, but I would assume thats standard practice. Maybe flash knew?

The only info I found on recent Flash showmatches in China was this thread from 10 days ago that I missed: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/bw-tournaments/535019-showmatch-flash-vs-leiche-on-6-30-1700-gmt8

The showmatch was organized by Blizzard CN, so it doesn't seem like the lack of Flash in the KSL was a 'politics' thing. But this particular showmatch was 10 days ago. Wouldn't he have had time to play in the KSL qualifiers?

The only thing Blizzard perhaps could have done differently, is to announce the tournament further ahead of time, so that the players could make their arrangements.

Its silly to expect them to 'ask flash if its ok' for them to have the tournament at a specific date. They can't be asked to schedule the whole production after one player.

Not attempt. In China doing showmatches.

That's sad, I hope this wasn't a politics thing and he legitimately had a contract before finding out about this league

There's no way this was a politics thing. He probably committed to it, either by his word or contract and didn't want to ruin a business relationship by being a flake.

Clearing the tournament dates with select progamers ahead of time would be way too political. Oh, they cleared it with Flash but not Jaedong? Oh, they cleared it with Flash and Jaedong but not Stork? Oh, they ...?

This was probably just a case of Blizzard announcing the KSL dates too late and Flash honoring his standing commitments.
May the BeSt man win.

It should be noted that buying tickets online through the ticket link is extremely difficult for non-koreans and will probably take you a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour to go through the process setting up accounts, installing apps and plugins, and submitting identity and payment information.

You can not buy tickets at the venue. Also you can't attend if you are under 15.

Man it sucks you can't buy a ticket at the venue. I'm in Korea and would love to see some games while I'm here...

Are there any other tournaments going in the next couple of days?

Oh, I think I misunderstood what he wrote above. I thought you couldn't buy a ticket at the venue, period. I guess I'm going after all then. This is going to be really fun, as I remember watching sea, snow and shine years back. Especially reading interviews with Sea which that one lady here on teamliquid did. I think her and Sea were friends or something. This brings back so many memories!! Following the proscene pre-match fixing scandal was a great time

So what you're saying is Me and my gf should show up without tickets and hope they let me buy on there. If not you might help us get in?

That's not a super solid plan so I wouldn't risk it. Your best bet is to try to figure out the website yourself or have a Korean friend help you through it.

The OG times we would stay up till 6 in the morning or wake up early to watch finals live and also struggle with latency issues.

A finals held at 03:30 with such great streaming quality is a miracle, you guys are spoiled.

Any clue who our casters will be today? If Artosis and Tasteless are doing GSL 3.5 hours before this starts, will that leave them enough time to boogie over to the KSL studio? I have no idea how long SC2 bo7s go for.

I'm pretty sure Artosis and Tasteless will be casting, there aren't really any other options unless its a Rapid solo cast and that dosent seem too likely lol

For a finals definitely Artosis and Tasteless, although they seem really busy recently with so many leagues non-stop. Don't they also cast SC2 leagues?

Tasteless didn't cast Group C of ASL R24 the other day.
