Possibly last StarCraft university tournament finals happened yesterday with StarCraft University S3 concluding with 194k peak viewers in tournament and 160k peak viewers in finals White graph below is peak Afreeca viewers during S3, and black graph below being overall viewer chart since July 2022. --- Just some peak viewer numbers in past S1 peak: 260k viewers S2 peak: 240k viewers S3 peak: 194k viewers --- Lots of talk about how it will be last since tons of university (NSU, JSA, CWU, MCU) disbanded with this tournament, with Basford planning to disband next month. overall, a very nice run where StarCraft topped afreeca charts for almost 2 years, but all nice things must end. This pretty much marks end of starcraft university scene (and revitalization) in korea Does anyone have any context as to why universities are disbanding? It seemed like it was really great for brood wars future overall, kinda sad to see it go away now...

ultimately this isnt a pro tourney with professional players. it was more of a passion project created out of the fans' and streamers' love for the game, and the incentive for streamers was that they get to be part of a up and coming trend of content. however the concept of universities was not that unlike professional tournaments, where fans could accept that the players are all at different standards, but fans expected the participants to sincerely participate in the competition. if the streamers arent really up to it, either due to the sheer difficulty of the game, or just because their interest in starcraft was tied more to the content and revenue it brought to their streaming careers rather than the love for the game, you get conflict within the team and criticism from fans. ultimately im guessing most people have come to terms that the university scene wasnt sustainable
