He was hired to replace coaches (Z)ComBi and Na Jae-woong, who both left after the end of last season.

He was hired to help players prepare for their SC2 matches.

Previously the Terran coach on Slayers, he is most known for helping (T)MMA win his first GSL title at Blizzcon against (T)MVP.

Oh god. Here comes the Jessica twitter fiasco.

Hes always seemed like a good coach. Could make or break Woojin I think.

Seriously smart pick up, he's a very good coach and deserves a lot of credit for SlayerS Terran succeses. Particularly good at gameplanning for certain opponents.

I suppose it was inevitable Brood War teams would buy what coaches with SC2 experience they could

I remember this guy busting into MMA's booth when he won at blizzcon, must have helped him prepare so much. will surely be a great asset to stars.

Wow, did not see this coming actually. Ryu is the best coach in SC2 (although there isn't many coaches) and he helped out SlayerS big time no doubt.

Pretty sneaky tho to get the best coach in sc2 when there is a deal to not make any sc2 player transfers. ^^

IMO Coach Lee (formerly of MBC Game Hero) is the best sc2 coach, even though his reputation is quite bad, the ammount of talent that has emerged from his team in INSANE. I mean like aLive (Fnatic), Rain (Fnatic), Puma (EG), JYP (EG), Heart (Complexity), and now with their new lineup their pretty much starting to look a bit like a mini-Woongjin a bit (considering how good SymboL/Shine/HyuN have been playing lately).

I'm also pretty impressed with Coach Kim from startale, I believe he was appointed as Coach this year and ever since then ST has had most players in Code S + The GSTL finals.

This seems to explain the Boxer Coach shift a few weeks back which was to prepare for this and help ease the transition of coaches. Cella's still around and BoxeR is obviously a good coach (I would believe), but yeah Ryu pick up for Woongjin is huge. In regards to the no SC2 player transfer thing, I believe Slayers has never actively participated in those agreements. Like they're still out of the new SC2 association thing no? So I guess it's a whole new case with SlayerS.

But with Boxer's roots, I thought Ryu would get picked up by SKT. But they have Coach Park so.
Need to write more things...

Ah I didn't mean to compare him to Coach Lee and Startale coach. I ment more like... game/race coach(?). Hmm don't know how to explain it. But Coach Lee and Startale coach are more like managers too since they own their teams and do all the management stuff like the part Jessica does for SlayerS while Coach Ryu only focused on the gameplay and was a pure coach. You don't have guys like than in the SC2 teams. The only ones I know was Coach Ryu and Cella in SlayerS.

EDIT: I guess Head Coach is the term I mean?

Woongjin is continuously on the rise in recent seasons and now means serious business this season. Expecting top SC2 performances (now with the help of Ryu too) and top BW performances. Nothing can stop us this time!

You mean like director? Coach Kim is not the director for Startale, Coach Won is (formerly of Pactech/WeMadeFox). Coach Kim is just game coach, that's why im so impressed by him. He got employed this year and directly after that Startale owned it up in GSTL and Code S, so it was really impressive. But I understand what you mean, the coaching staffs at most sc2 teams are quite unknown therefore it's kind of hard to know about stuff like that.

soulkey plays terran for sc2. Don't know how good of a coach he is, but if he made mma a champion then soulkey has an even brighter sc2 future.

Ah yes, Ryu Won.

Needed a picture to jog my memory. I do recall seeing him helping out a lot of SlayerS players in the booth quite a bit last year. Considering how good SlayerS Terrans are in the SC2 scene, perhaps with his help "Woongjin Terran" will be a term to fear, not deride. And perhaps the shift is already occurring with Woongjin Terran alumni IM.MVP still doing well in SC2.

That's pretty cool. Kind of a bummer for SlayerS, I'm worried their team is going into a bit of a slump, but oh well.

Woongjin yeah!

I think its good for the development of sc2 for kespa players if they get a few sc2 coaches. Getting a coach this experienced will be a huge bonus for stars.

Fantastic news, Stars are setting themselves up to be prime contenders in the new proleague season. Especially with Soulkey doing well in SC2 and all, gotta believe that ZerO isn't that far behind either. Don't mind all the shifting around right now, it's exciting to me.

Btw does anyone know what Ryu's background is (was he a BW coach or anything?). It seems like Boxer just brought him out from thin air and he just became one of the best strategist in SC2.

IMO, buying SC2 coaches at the moment would be helpful for their players. The key part I'm looking at is the OS2L where we will see non-kespa players against kespa players.

Still, if there has to be a winner, might as well be WJ. Fighting!

Gentleman's agreement? I don't see how this is anything to be annoyed about. All the teams have to pay their player's contracts, so they want to get as many of them as possible up to a competitive skill level in SC2 since getting current SC2 players would be expensive and time consuming. That is the whole point of the hybrid league. Getting everyone up to speed, and if your coaches are gonna leave then replacing them with coaches appropriate for SC2 should be no surprise at all. They're not keeping all their players instead of getting SC2 players out of a bizarre sense of fairness, they're trying to maintain as many of their assets as possible while switching. Why would you get a new BW coach? That is the nature of the current situation -.-
