Status: Updated Through Round Two

This is will NOT update weekly but I should be able to update it every round.

This is all information I've been pulling for my own amusement anyway (also some of it helps with FPL in theory); I thought I'd share. If you want a stat or leaderboard I haven't posted here, feel free to ask, but I make no promises.

Time to update after Round Two: Approximately 7 hours total work over two days. (I'm guessing the Round Three Update will go a little faster because all the "templates" are in place, but this is to let you know why it's not a weekly thing!)

+ Show Spoiler [Old Post] +
Last night SKT sent four Zergs against Woongjin Stars, then the 2nd-best vs. Zerg squad in the league (SKT was #1). T1's Zerg line went 1-3, which should have surprised no one - and in the process jumped Woogjin's vs. Zerg winning percentage to tops in the league.

I was astounded by the chutzpah of Coach Park, though I guess he's got a big enough lead he can do whatever he wants, but I thought it would be interesting to break down the teams overall.

SK Telecom T1: Game record 47-27 (63.5%)

vs Protoss: 14-8 (63.6%)
Quick Overview: Bisu, fantasy, and BeSt all have winning records against Protoss, to nobody's surprise. Most of the losses come from the mediocre rest of the team.
vs Terran: 13-9 (59.1%)
Quick Overview: SKT's "weak" matchup - especially when you take out fantasy's 6-0 TvT record. Surprisingly, Bisu is undefeated against Terran while BeSt has struggled a little. Unsurprisingly, most of the losses come from the Zergs.
vs Zerg: 20-10 (66.7%)
Quick Overview: This is of course headlined by Bisu's 8-0 record, after which the rest of the team has basically just held its own
Diagnosis: To beat SKT, you really have to try for good matchups game-to-game and hope for the best. Strangely, T1's aces are probably most vulnerable to Protoss right now, while the rest of the team has problems with Terran.

Woongjin Stars: Game record 43-33 (56.6%)

vs Protoss: 11-12 (47.8%)
Quick Overview: Woongjin's only reliable vsP player right now is free - though this may be because ZerO has gotten stuck with a ton of ZvZ so far. Apart from the team's ace, Stars' vs Protoss is bad.
vs Terran: 11-11 (50.0%)
Quick Overview: SoulKey has shown up well for the Stars; Really, free, and ZerO hold their own; the rest of the team struggles.
vs Zerg: 21-10 (67.7%)
Quick Overview: Soulkey 3-1; Really 4-0; ZerO 6-2; Crazy-Hydra 4-2. The only Star with a losing record against Zerg is scrub Terran Center (0-1).
Diagnosis: A lot of Terran is the best way to beat Woongjin, going just by stats. This could backfire (hard) against their aces, but at that point it's an ace game and team stats go out the window.

WeMade FOX: Game record 40-36 (52.6%)

vs Protoss: 22-11 (66.7%)
Quick Overview: BaBy, Midas, and Pure lead the way - unusual in that WeMade's managed to upset the usual P>T balance. The rest of the team maintains an average.
vs Terran: 11-12 (47.8%)
Quick Overview: WeMade's Protoss have struggled against Terran this season; RorO, sometime ace, used to be defined by his ZvT but is average; the only bright spot is Shine's 3-0 record.
vs Zerg: 7-13 (35.0%)
Quick Overview: Shine is undefeated at 2-0; BaBy is 2-1; the rest is silence.
Diagnosis: Zerg. Lots of Zerg. Send Zerg in the ace game too: Shine hasn't played aces this season and the rest of WeMade has problems with the big bugs.

STX SouL: Game record 35-33 (51.5%)

vs Protoss: 14-12 (53.8%)
Quick Overview: What do you get when your world-beating PvPer from a year ago is "only" scoring 60% wins, and the rest of your team is average against Protoss? Answer: this record. Disturbing, in that it's the team's best matchup as a whole.
vs Terran: 10-10 (50%)
Quick Overview: Kal's and Bogus's utter dominance of Terran is balanced by the ineptitude of Calm, Last, and Modesty; the result is average overall, but game-to-game depends on who you face.
vs Zerg: 11-11 (50.0%)
Quick Overview: by.hero and Calm have winning records (barely) against Zerg. The rest are average or bad.
Diagnosis: Overall, a lot of Zerg would cause problems for many STX players; on the other hand if you get Kal and Bogus out of the way early, you're better off finishing with a steady diet of Terran. STX is a hard team to plan for: although average overall, they run the full spectrum of individual strengths and weaknesses.

Hite Entus: Game record 35-35 (50.0%)

vs Protoss: 14-10 (58.3%)
Quick Overview: Leta, Horang2, and Hydra all play well against Protoss; Movie and sKyHigh both get slaughtered regularly, but overall this is hite's best matchup this season.
vs Terran: 11-9 (55.0%)
Quick Overview: For the "winning" part of this record, you can thank Leta (of course) and Hydra - 6-1 between the two of them. I'll let you do the math to figure out what the rest of the team has scored.
vs Zerg: 10-16 (38.5%)
Quick Overview: hite has no players with a winning record against Zerg.
Diagnosis: Zerg. Lots of Zerg. Maybe the occasional Terran, if you can avoid Leta and Hydra; send a Protoss only if you want to help hite not embarrass themselves.

MBCGame HERO: Game record 39-40 (49.4%)

vs Protoss: 17-17 (50.0%)
Quick Overview: Sea has been very good; Saint has been very bad; the rest of the team about average.
vs Terran: 10-9 (52.6%)
Quick Overview: Sea and Jaehoon have been very good; HyuN and Light have simply not performed to date. (For Light, I'm willing to make that a "yet". I'm sure he'll come around.)
vs Zerg: 12-14 (46.2%)
Quick Overview: The team as a whole has been average; Saint has been awful.
Diagnosis: MBC has done best, really, against Protoss; however, there aren't significant variances between the chances of winning vs. a particular race, though maybe Terran is your best bet once Sea and Jaehoon have been played. MBC's biggest problem going forward is finding a lineup replacement for Saint, who has been abysmal this year.

Samsung KHAN: Game record 34-39 (46.6%)

vs Protoss: 12-15 44.4%)
Quick Overview: Brave has played very well against Protoss, and Jangbi verly poorly. The rest of the team trends slightly on the bad side of average, though some consistency from Stork would help that.
vs Terran: 9-12 (42.9%)
Quick Overview: TurN's solid record is offset by Juni and Jangbi's horrendous play and Stork's underperformance. The rest is average.
vs Zerg: 13-12 (52.0%)
Quick Overview: Brave and TurN, rookie phenoms, are 6-0 between them - which leaves the rest of the team at 7-12, of course.
Diagnosis: KHAN has a fairly deep roster, but January insists on playing everyone, instead of sticking with her 6 or 7 best most of the time. In terms of beating KHAN, Zerg is the safe bet, except against TurN and Brave, but it really doesn't matter: most KHAN players seem equally good (or bad) at most matchups.

Air Force ACE: Game record 32-40 (44.4%)

vs Protoss: 14-12 (53.8%)
Quick Overview: ggaemo, M18M, and Ruby all have winning records against Protoss - Ruby undefeated. For ACE, that's enough to post an overall winning record here, though the rest of the squad varies from mediocre to bad.
vs Terran: 12-10 (54.5%)
Quick Overview: ggaemo, firebathero, Much, and GoRush all have winning records; Ruby is actually terrible at TvT this year; the others are average.
vs Zerg: 6-18 (25.0%)
Quick Overview: ACE's Achilles' heel. Much, M18M, and GoRush have all done very poorly; only ggaemo, the newest recruit (with the freshest reflexes) has maintained an even record.
Diagnosis: Zerg. Also more Zerg. If you want to beat ACE, play your Zergs - if you send Terran and Protoss against them, they might actually win, and then what will you do?

Hwaseung OZ: Game record 33-42 (44.0%)

vs Protoss: 8-16 (33.3%)
Quick Overview: Jaedong 3-1; Princess 2-0; that's the winning records. HiyA, once a TvP specialist, is a terrible 0-3.
vs Terran: 9-16 (36.0%)
Quick Overview: Jaedong 2-1; Killer 4-3; that's the winning records. HiyA's never been a fantastic TvTer, but 1-5 is really inexcusable.
vs Zerg: 16-10 (61.5%)
Quick Overview: Jaedong is, of course, 8-2; OZ actually has no one with a losing record against Zerg except scrub toss Sky (0-2).
Diagnosis: Not Zerg. After all the other teams, that sounds a little weird, but just send everybody except your Zerg at Hwaseung, and you'll probably win. After losing a game to Jaedong, of course.

KT Rolster: Game record 33-46 (41.8%)

vs Protoss: 8-15 (34.8%)
Quick Overview: KT hasn't played very well against Protoss this year - and then Violet and Tempest are a combined 1-7 in PvP. After last year's apparently breakout by KT's Protoss line, I don't know what to make of this.
vs Terran: 12-17 (41.4%)
Quick Overview: Flash is 4-1; Stats is 3-3; the rest have losing records.
vs Zerg: 13-14 (48.1%)
Quick Overview: Without Flash's 7-0, this becomes 6-14, which is, as they say, terrible.
Diagnosis: Nothing is going right for KT right now. Part of the problem is almost certainly the longer matches; with Bo7 you need not just a good #2 (right now, Stats) but a solid #3 - and right now the best approximation KT has is fOrGG at 4-6. KT has no good matchups: apart from trying to lose only a bad player to Flash, you don't really need to plan when you play them.

---

Best Matchup: Woongjin Stars vs Zerg (21-10, 67.7%)
Worst Matchup: Air Force ACE vs Zerg (6-18, 25.0%)
Most Consistent Team: STX SouL (53.8.%, 50.0%, 50.0%)
Least Consistent Team (Double Award!):
LCT, Overall Variation: WeMade Fox (66.7%, 47.8%, 35.0%)
LCT, Biggest Anomaly: Air Force ACE (53.8%, 54.5%, 25.0%)

Stars vZ should be 67.7% (21 / 31). This is quite interesting. Why are so many teams bad against Zerg?
Dear BW Gods, I know it's not autumn (in the Northern hemisphere), but please have mercy on Protoss.

Great statistics, very interesting read, and i can't help but think if coaches look at this kind of data while preparing for a match.

This also explains some of the Upsets that have been happening.

Thanks for the rankings!

GREAT STATS!!

very surprised Sea.Really is 4-0 TvZ, who would have thought he could be so good in that matchup

Also feeling sorry for Flash, and despite Bisu's huge win streak, I hoped he would look more dominant. SKT still heading for #1 as Woongjin having some confidence issues or something in zero and free.

Team Overviews updated to reflect Round Two results + new format.
Individual overall leaderboard added, matchups done.
Race-Line stats added as a category (not updated yet).

If you'd like to request a top ten for a stat I don't have, please ask, but I may not be able to provide it off my personal spreadsheet.

I'll also send a PM when I figure out who to PM, but could a mod change the title to "SPL 10-11 Leaderboard"?

Edit: Thanks!

Same here. How appropriate.

It's surprising to see who is carrying certain teams.

It wasn't entirely accidental - I couldn't figure out what to call the opposite-of-an-ace-player, so I gave the position a name based on BW history. It was however entirely fortuitous that Rock had managed to play enough games to earn the place for himself.

ROFL when someone like Flash snipes every race, I don't think the title "sniper" is justified.

Great stats, I love how you provide the same data under multiple perspective.
Thank you for your time !

Also, I agree that the term sniper is a little misused. I see what you meant, you used it for a player that good impressive results in a matchup, but that's not the real meaning.

We usually use "sniper" to designate a player who can only play 1 match up, and the coach successfully "snipes" the opponent if he plays the race the sniper is good against. Example : SkyHigh TvT, Horang2 PvP, etc. But saying that Stork is a PvZ sniper sounds strange (although I admit he had a very well prepared cheese against JD).

Same goes for sniped, for example Saint is just bad at every match up, and he by chance met a lot of protoss and lost to them. I don't think anyone attempted to 'snipe' a terrible player like Saint lol.

But anyway, the way you presented data was very innovative !

My dream is that one day they give us the structure of TLPD's SQL tables and let us perform read-only requests. You could literally get any kind of information !

Whoa, this is a really nice stat compilation. :O

Out of curiosity, do the top spl/liquibet people use things like this to decide which players and teams to choose for their teams/votes? I've always winged it, and have been under the impression that the top splers/liquibetters have some insane stat analysis to decide ><

With Flash being kt's only "sniper" they should pile some Winner's league win to get to top 5.

vs Zerg: 10-16 (38.5%)
Quick Overview: hite has no players with a winning record against Zerg.
Diagnosis: Zerg. Lots of Zerg. Maybe the occasional Terran, if you can avoid Leta and Hydra; send a Protoss only if you want to help hite not embarrass themselves.

What happened to mOvie?
He was so good at PvZ.

People on TL seriously exaggerated how good he was at PvZ.... Jangbi and Shuttle both had little streaks where they appeared to have PvZ worked out a lot more then went back to usual complete inconsistency. Same with Movie, except for some reason people got worked up about him a lot more. He had some games which looked like complete rapes due to good timings but he wasn't overall stronger in the matchup than any other Protoss at that level.

I had hopes for Flying but turns out he can't do it either. Bisu is seriously the only Protoss capable of consistent PvZ. I'd love for someone else to figure it out as well. Storks been doing alright recently but still... not convinced.

I have no idea how people end up with good liquibet results. Some of it's just how much you follow the game. I'm 223 in the BW LQB right now with a 57% on both, but I doubt more than about 500-700 people actually vote every ballot.

As for fantasy, I've finished in the top 100-150 every time I've had a couple rounds worth of data, but there's also a ton of luck involved. For instance, Hydra went 4-6 in R1, 10-0 in R2 - how do you predict something like that?

The first couple teams I did data for were Ace and hite. Both of those have a player (GoRush and Horang2) who's really strong in one matchup, and terrible in another. I kept the term even where it doesn't quite fit - but part of what you'll see is that some teams don't really have a true "sniper". Bisu, for instance, is insanely good at everything right now, but his PvZ really stands out - and nobody else has a MU that does except (probably) fantasy's TvT. Other teams the "sniper" - the autowin matchup the team wants doesn't fit either the way we usually think of the team, or the way the team plays: e.g. STX. Modesty is known as a ZvZ player where in fact he's only 2-1 this year (and TBH has similar records in previous years). The reputation is a combination of the fact that that's how STX uses him and the fact that other STX Zergs are usually even worse at ZvZ (except Calm when he's not being Clam). But I didn't have a better term to use.

Jaedong drew a 3 Protoss group.
Flash's group had two other Terrans and a Zerg, and the Zerg was eliminated.
Bisu's group had Shine, Really, and Kal - Shine was eliminated.

In other words, there are 9 Zergs in the MSL Ro16 because Bisu, Flash, and Jaedong avoided Zergs when picking groups (though I don't know how much say Bisu had in his group, as he was coming from the MST this season). Jaedong's all Protoss group is wussy I guess but totally makes sense. Flash only pulling one Zerg... well the two Terrans were relatively new?

Add Stork, and TaekBangLeeSang are 34-4 against Zerg in Proleague.

yes and it is the infamous "wait for them making mistakes themselves" strategy. It doesn't work every time unfortunately.
