Korean Air OSL 2010 Finals Final Winner: EffOrt “I wasn’t shaken even when the score was 0-2.”
Q: How do you feel about your victory? A: When Flash played against Pure, I wanted Flash to advance. If I managed to make it to the finals to play against Flash, I wanted to show myself from last year. Although Flash played really well, I was luckier than him today. I’m really happy.
Q: It’s your first final, so did you get nervous? A: It was the first time playing in front of so many people. However, I think this environment suits me. I play better when there are more people. When there’s a small audience, I seem to play worse. I was really angry at myself when the score was 0-2. I prepared so hard but I was surprised by Flash’s aggressive attack. From set 3, a lot of people gave me helpful words and I was able to concentrate better.
Q: A re-game was called on game 1. Did it affect you at all? A: It could sound like an excuse, but the waiting time after the original game 1 was really long. My mind became weaker during that time, so I couldn’t play as well as I wanted. It surprised me that there was a re-game in such a big stage.
Q: You played offensively starting game 3 A: I played aggressively starting game 3. I prepared strategies depending on the spawn locations. I spawned on locations where I could play aggressively and I played too cautiously until game 2. I decided to play fully starting game 3.
Q: What advices did you hear when you were behind 0-2? A: Although I was losing 0-2, the match wasn’t over. I was even in the rererere-game scenario. Iris, who has previous final stage experiences, helped me so well so much. He told me not to be burdened by anything. Thanks to him, I was able to set my mind correctly. My manager also told me similar things.
Q: Your rererere-game experience seems to have helped you today A: I feel that I definitely changed after that incident. I was behind 0-2, but I was not shaken at all. After hearing good advices, I was able to make a comeback.
Q: You found Flash’s proxy barracks in set 4. A: Honestly, I didn’t play a lot of BoX’s in my life so I didn’t have a completely idea of what to do. However, I realized a lot of things today. I won easily in set 3, so I felt that Flash would try something like that in set 4. This wasn’t what I had originally planned. I trusted my instincts and sent the Overlord straight to the middle of the map. I saw the center Barracks and thought “he fell into it”. If I put my guard down too early, I could have lost so I tried my best until the end.
Q: How was the last game for you? A: I thought a lot about it after a re-game was called. Rather than thinking I should win the game, I played without any pressure.
Q: Did you think that Flash would do 14CC in the last set? A: Rather than thinking about it, Flash blocked his entrance in set 1 so I had to think a lot about this build order. I was aiming to destroy fast expo builds.
Q: You made the entrance by coming down from a crane. Flash’s appearance seemed cooler than yours, so were you jealous? A: I like to ride those things. I became a dizzy because the thing kept on shaking. Flash did make a better appearance but since he was the past champion and because he’s the best player right now, I couldn’t complain.
Q: Your teammates must have helped you a lot A: I’ve always said this, but I think our Terran players are the best players. I’m really thankful that they helped me so much. I will have to treat them soon.
Q: How will you use your prize money? A: Although I’m an adult, I trust my parents with my money so I will give it to them.
Q: There are a lot of bad things happening in CJ in addition to eSports. A: There have been a lot of bad incidents recently. We will have to try harder to heal our fans’ scars. The atmosphere in our team will get better due to my win so we will change a lot. We will finish strong in Proleague.
Q: Anything else? A: There were so many fans today. My family and my relatives all came to watch me. A lot of people came so I want to thank them. I hope they continue to cheer for me.
Source: Fomos One thing I would like to ask from all of you is to stay away from extreme fanboyism/fangirlism since the LR is exploding with them already. Both of them played well in such a pressuring environment. Thanks!
A gold medal won by Effort, a CJ Entus rookie helped by Iris who was so close to achieving one himself and Coach Cho, one of the oldest serving coaches and definitely the one who trusts most in his players...

UNBELIEVABLE UPSET YES YES YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS EFFORT IS WIN EFFORT IS WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN + Show Spoiler +
YESSSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS EFFORT GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO YEAAAAAAAAAA EFFORT > FLASH FUCK YEA YOU GUYS WERE ALL WRONG CJ FTW YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Grats Effort. Flash losing a BO5 to someone who isn't Jaedong is the best thing that could've happened to keep people interested in Brood War. I love Flash yet i'm very happy Effort won, especially in a comeback from 2-0 down. He's not invincible.
This was as exciting as watching Rocky IV, just right then when rocky hurst drago, and someone says "See?! See?! hes not a machine, hes human! hes human!..."
Dramatic series, if only every final could be this intense. Delays weren't as epic, though. I hope this great victory will help the whole team to recover from past events. Thanks for the translation, always appreciated.
MESSIAH bringing redemption for CJ and he who must not be named.
I was so dejected when he was down 0-2 but he really came through in the end. I hoped for him to win after he won in proleague but this series was much more epic than I expected. It was better than jaedong vs fantasy.
I'm glad kespa handled the monitor problem without too many problems (although I would feel cheated if flash won after that).
Also, it was heartwarming to see all the fans there, without any empty seats. iirc, the announcers said that some of the people even came a day in advance and camped out for the best seats. I'm glad that e-sports is still alive and kicking and that the OSL finals is still the OSL finals ^^
This finals show much confidence/mental strength is important in succeeding. It doesn't matter if you are skillful or not, if you aren't mentally strong enough you won't go far. Now I don't want to deny what Flash has done so far, but this really makes me impressed with Jaedong's mind.
I seriously cannot believe this, I stayed up until 7:48 AM EXACTLY thinking Effort would lose 3-0. I pondered for about 10 mins if I should go to bed or not, seeing that I was already up for hours. Eventually, I just gave up staying awake and went to sleep.
JUST TO FIND OUT that Effort won 3-2. I wish I could've stayed up to watch that happen. It must've been amazing for those who watched it live. I think this is what we needed for a little boost of hope in E-Sports, exciting games.
Anyways, congrats to Effort. Hopefully, Flash beats Jaedong so it can make a good story .

you probably wouldve fallen asleep on your keyboard and woken up with waffle-face, so don't sweat it
I love how majority of the posts say that only reason Effort won is because Flash played like he was retarded.
I give credit to Effort's performance, but I got to agree with mass majority about the fact that Flash picked some dumbass build orders/ made some rash decisions during games 3-5.
I'm mind boggled that Flash got swept 3 games in a row by Effort...
Massive props to Effort. While some may dismiss his win as a gimmicky win, some of the tactics he displayed in games 3 and 5 were absolutely spectacular.
So this is like a preview for Jaedong? Looks like Flash will hit the wall into slump... Up 2-0 vs a struggling lately ZvT effort... How did it happen~.~

It is awesome, great comeback victory by Effort. So proud as a CJ fan. Now we just need movie and skyhigh to start winning.
Thanks for the translation by the way, congrats to Effort Kim Jung Woo !!!

Im very happy for Effort and CJ!! Yay!!! But gotta question Flash decision to go BBS/14CC in the last 2 games... I cant help but think that he just wanted to win both titles, and thus not produce too much material for Jaedong to study... But if that is the case, then he deserved to loose even more, for underestimating his opponent...
And btw, all who say "ah lucky Effort scouting the BBS", he was sending early drone scouts in every game iirc, so it wasnt luck, more that he was playing safe. And it was so much better then pure's and free's triple blind 12nex...
GG Alien!!!! I knew u had it in you!!! (and thus i advanced like 150 ranks in liquibet :D )

I'd rather lose to Jaedong than lose the golden mouse. But I would have BBSed on game 3 as Flash(I thought so right after game 2), for the simple reason that Effort liked going 3 hatch before pool. Same could justify 14cc. But it didn't work out, as greedy builds sometimes don't. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Such a momma's boy, spend it on rolex, gucci and whores. Must keep the tradition alive.
Great interview and thanks for the amazing effort!(no pun intended) I remember when Effort used to have an air of arrogance(?) about a year or so ago, but with recent interviews and this starleague win he seems to have humbled down and also matured as a player, back then i wasn't a big fan Effort but i can honestly say hes impressed me immensely not only in his play but his changed attitude, props to him and this makes the MSL finals even more critical for the top of BW. Thanks again.
I really don't understand why people are saying that Flash messed up game 3. His play was perfect given the information that he had, almost any other zerg would have skimped on lings and planted a hatch at the natural after getting the one at the 3rd up. Then Flash's pressure would have kept the mutas at bay while turrets come up. EffOrt mindfucked Flash in the same way that Snow did in the SPL, using his game sense against him. This wasn't Flash's mistake, it was EffOrt's excellent build order and play. Remember kids, in a game of imperfect information it is possible to play correctly and do the "wrong" thing at the same time.

must be so good vs cheese because he practices with skyhigh all day lol

His marine movement sucked. He rushed out without his medics and his marine moved out in a single line instead of keeping it in a ball. Its unflashlike. And he didn't move his marine around to check around for zerglings.
i've never really though much of effort before now but his performance in the osl made him such a baller in my eyes. to come back from being down 0-2 and after the whole regame situation.....insane that he could pull it back together in the face of one of the fiercest vZ players the game has ever seen
Excellent finals, I was impressed all the way through. I was almost certain that EffOrt was done when he was down 2-0. However, I was happily proven wrong, and got to see even more of the game, which was nothing short of awesome! Very mature interview as well, good job out there EffOrt!
I feel for Flash. He fucked up, he could have won that so hard... He lost because he fucked up, he's still a much better player. Damn he must be pissed off. I feel sorry for him.
well done to both players for reaching the finals and giving us a thrilling finals and thanx for the translation 6 days to msl finals come on guys i need some hype!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hahaha. I watched the whole series last night. When I clicked show spoilers on the OP, I was surprised to see effort's face. lol. Apparently, I altered my memory.

correct me if im wrong but, didn't flash see the gas timing?
Cause if he saw the gas timing, he would then instantly know it was going to be a 2 hatch build.

I'm not sure what you are saying. Of course Flash knew that it was a 2 hatch muta build that was coming, that's why he moved out his marines in the first place. The timing would have worked out such that the marines would have reached EffOrt's base and started pressuring the moment the mutas were ready, forcing the mutas to stay home and defend (Flash has demonstrated this multiple times in games against 2 hatch muta in the last few months). Spending money on extra lings instead of a third hatch after building a hatch at the second expansion is highly unusual however, especially for a macro player like EffOrt.
Why is everybody saying flash threw the games away? He hasn't really been good at BO5's. If it stretches all the way, you will see 1 14cc, bbs(or other proxy rax), and a bunch of 1 rax CC. Same thing last time he played JD. Part of his problem is that he only has 3 build orders. He plays them very well, but even so he becomes predictable in a rock paper scissors sense.
What I mean to point out is that Flash didn't do anything he normally does not do when he BBS or 14CC. He uses those to enhance his 1rax CC play. 14CC gives him an econ advantage that other players might not expect, and the proxy rax etc keeps them honest. It is not un-flash like to use these build orders.
I just watched the series right now, since I've been to bella Italia the last few days. My liquibet was in favour of EffOrt (yay!) but when he was 0-2 behind I took a brake to go for a walk with my dog, it was so frustrating! When Effort won 3-2 I was cheering so hard, I think I woke up my whole family (including the dog)!!! So much joy, now I'm one step closer to making my grandma an esports-fan!
