MBCGame Apologizes Officially about Nate Final

[This is a time-sensitive material that people might wanna get over with quickly. So I'm just posting a text translation instead of taking much more time to download the video, upload it, and put a subtitle.]

1/25/2010

Before we start the game, we’re issuing an apology about the Nate MSL final.

At the final (last Saturday, January 23, at 5:00 p.m.) between KT’s Flash and Hwaseung’s Jaedong, a power outage that should never take place in live e-sports broadcasting occurred during the 3rd set.

It was an accident resulting from an attempt to improve the player’s condition by running a mini heater, but since it was due to not carefully checking the electricity system, MBCGame deeply apologizes to the 20 million e-sports fans in the country and to the audience who believe in and support us.

It was found that outside personnel who was involved in MSL didn’t understand that the studio at issue had been designed so that if the power is overused, it’s automatically turned off – as opposed to a regular studio which uses UPS (uninterruptible power supply).

The producer and the outside personnel, the team director and the department director will be held responsible and appropriate measures will be taken.

We also apologize that even after the power was back, we didn’t proceed with the game quickly due to the dealing with KeSPA’s holding on Jaedong’s win.

Whatever caused the accident, we acknowledge that we caused an indelible scar to e-sports fans.

It will take us a lot of effort and time to heal that wound, but we will do our best in coming together to expedite the process.

We apologize again, and we will take this accident as a striking reason for us to strive for a high-quality and dynamic broadcasting that will restore us to e-sports’ famed house.

Props to them, hopefully they'll get a new sponsor. I would be really sad to see only OSL + PL. It's enough that GOM have died.

This is definitely better than the "do nothing" approach, I'm feeling a tad bit better about the whole MSL situation now.

I still think that:
1) They should have also mentioned e-sports fans OUTSIDE Korea (I mean, what about us here!) who were disappointed in many ways about the MSL finals. They should be well aware of the presence of the foreign fan communities by now.
2) MBC did not apologize on behalf of KeSPA about the decision to give JD game 3. MBC only apologized for the delay it caused, not the decision itself. Unless those guys don't read internet comments and reviews and whatever, they should have heard enough rants about the decision. I wonder if KeSPA would release an official statement about it. It was a controversial decision (in my opinion) at best.

Still, kudos to MBC for broadcasting a sincere apology.

Why would MBC apologize on Kespa's behalf? MBC had nothing to do with the referees' decision. Kespa can release a statement of their own if the feel like it. And it certainly won't be an apology but an explanation/clarification how they reached their (imo correct) decision.

Lol, what were they thinking with a power supply that could go off if too much was used? I don't understand, is that a safety thing or something? If the power didn't go off, could the building have burned down or something?

The only thing they should've done differently was apologized to fans outside Korea as well. But this is what they needed to do, well done, I applaud MBC.

If I was watching the apology live, I would have half-expected a spokesperson from KeSPA to show up and say a few words about their decision (and apologize for the delay). I wouldn't expect MBC to do it for them, duh.

Bleh, I'm just really disappointed that the finals didn't live up to the hype. I guess what's done is done.

Well, better late than never. They should have responded a bit quicker than this though.

In honesty, they should have released an official statement regarding their choice of MSL studio and apologize for the Flash pop up thing as well, PRIOR to the actual MSL final.

At least they aren't ignoring the fans' outrages.

LOL. Have you seen the American attempts at televised esports? Every channel that has ever tried has failed miserably. I'm beginning to doubt that any American channel would have the brainpower to create something good.

If anything, Korea needs to come to America to show us how its done.

shit happens, don't be too harsh with MBC

they worried about foreigners with GOMTV championships, right? we can't forget that.

hmm now I don't remember if GOMTV were owned by MBC channel... lol

No. Other than the fact that they don't control KeSPA, that would scream bias, which would kill any broadcasting companies ability to cast any sport.

I just read the other thread about the upcoming OSL sponsor.
I suppose MBC really felt a dire need to regain their image for their MSL because they're about to be crushed.

Nice to see the apology and shedding some real light on what happened (although this could be fabricated, but I trust them).

Adding a heater for the players at the last minute and not realizing the studio has a power limit is a ridiculous blunder, but shit happens. I am over it and reflecting on that series as what it should be, some seriously high play from the 2 best players in the world.

I wasn't that mad to be honest... shit happens all the time. Janet Jackson's titties popped out at the super bowl once, and that's the SUPER BOWL. I understand the huge delays were really annoying (well a little, I'm watching it for free basically), but they are only human and they are still putting on a pretty entertaining show for us. Games one, two, and three until the time of the incident were some of the most excellently played StarCraft I have ever seen.

I feel bad for Flash. Watching him twitch after it happened was kind of freaky and really shows how much stress he was under. He had no chance in game four. MBC and KeSPA (but mostly kespa) need to apologize to him, not so much us. Sure it was embarrassing but hopefully most people will get the fuck over it and enjoy the next MSL.

Just to clarify, KeSPA did nothing wrong and made the best decision out of a fucked up situation.

And as long as MBC recognizes the problem and learned from it, eSports actually benefits in the long run as shit like this is far less likely to happen again in the future.

I am annoyed as hell with them over their decisions regarding the finals, but at least they gave us a good lunch during it. Being locked in the press room under security guard whilst watching Kespa vs the KT Rolster coaching staff/Flash's Dad for an hour was both mind-numbingly boring and strangely compelling - at least I had everyone on vent to keep me company.

seriously?

ever hear of something called circuit breakers or fuseboxes that prevent too much current from going through the wires in a building from when you have too much stuff drawing power?

consequences: equipment failures, melted wires causing expensive rewiring projects, fires?

I really appreciated your live reporting. It may have been boring for you but people love knowing what's going on when problems occur.

I'm glad this shouldn't happen again and that MBC apologized. However, I will never get my epic game 3 conclusion or proper game 4 back (and game 5!?). In the end we've just got to move on. Where's the official Jaedong bonjwa thread?

Appreciate your great work and I feel bad that you had to suffer.

I shut down my computer and went to bed 2 minutes before the power outage occurred lol. Don't know if that's the bad thing or good thing. Bad: Missing one of the most (un)epic moments in Starcraft history. Good: Actually got some sleep instead of waiting an hour for game 4 to start, which ended very anticlimactically.

This MSL tainted the careers of two of the greatest players of all time. Flash lost his shot at the B-word by losing to Jaedong, while Jaedong can not gain the recognition that he rightfully (or not, since it is possible that the final outcome would have been different if the disaster did not occur) deserves because he achieved victory under such extraordinary circumstances.

That's inclusive of everyone. Isn't a big deal now, everyone's moved on and they've made a humble apology.

Oh, and did anyone not expect them to apologize formally? An apology is to be expected.

Who are the "outside personnel" and "the team director" anyways?

Personally I think both players got screwed by this.

If that power outage hadn't happened there were two possible outcomes.

Jaedong won that game and went on to win the whole thing calm and collected against a calm and collected Flash... and thus gains even more respect by beating the best TvZer ever.

Flash comes back and takes the next two maps and is declared the next "B"...

As it was Flash looked hugely shaken by all the drama that went on and pretty much just outright lost that last game, he had no chance of playing solidly after having to deal with his team and father and the Kespa decision.
Can you ever argue in favor of something without first proving it?

GJ MBC. First step to redemption. Ensure that it doesn't happen ever again.

Ehm, I don't forgive. MBC shouldn't go blaming the electrical studio and "outside personnel" seeing that the finals wouldn't even be held in that studio if it wasn't for them, avoiding this whole fiasco.

Everyone who says "I don't forgive MSL" ...
What else should they've been doing?
They had a technical error, they apologized for it, now give 'em another chance to prove that they're not the retards you're trying to make out of them.
I mean, didn't the MSL - in grand total - definitely give more to us than they took by screwing up this one final?
That's what you should keep in mind while flaming them.
Yea, I've been bashing them in the LR too while on nerdrage, hell yeah, that's perfectly fine cuz we all were in front of the monitors watching nothing for about one hour and a half but ya... it's gotta stop at some point.

I however do sign everything said about the "get rid of the virtual studio" thingy, not only cause it failed but also because of what JD said in his interview, the players are just not that close to the fans anymore, yea it might make them more comfortable and less nervous while playing, but IMO that's also an important part of skill. (more specially one I've been lacking off often enough, haha)

Although what happened was very unfortunate, a part of being a champion is being able to deliver under any conditions, not only optimal ones. The coaches should(and maybe they do) prepare them with a mindset that "anything can happen, just keep your focus on upcoming games"

you don't do the trial run of a new system on the biggest event in company history.

you make the trial run of a new system an event of its own, during a dull game or something.

all they can do right now is apologize, so it's good they did. It's a step in the right direction.

1) Why? You're getting greedy and selfish.

2) Of course...why would MBC apologize for a decision made completely outside their control? That's not something they're responsible for, except for the power outage itself, but that's going too far.

It took me a short bit to understand what got me annoyed in the apology - it wasn't what was said, but the thing that they didn't say: "we have taken measures so a mistake like this will not happen in the future".

Without that line, this apology is lacking in any substance. "Sorry" doesn't fix what they did wrong. Neither does saying that they'll punish the guy responsible. It was a fiasco, and what could possibly have been the greatest final series in e-sports history was ruined. I don't expect them to go in details (eg, "we installed a new set of guidelines for testing stages, creating redundancies, bla bla bla"), but just an assurance that they are working on something to make things like this less likely. I'm sure they are, and I'm sure that they don't want a repeat of this, but what they're saying just comes off as a child apologizing for breaking a vase, not a big company trying to re-instill the trust of their valued clients.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, but that just strikes me as amateurish. Something that this mess has already caused me to feel towards MBC (a full hour of filler before the games started, a small crowd in a tiny stadium THAT DIDN'T GET TO SEE THE PLAYERS, a crappy virtual studio apparently without proper heating, the infamous power outage, and the icing on the cake: endless commercials during an hour of wasted time for which they had no back up plan).
Friendship is like peeing yourself. Anyone can see it, but only you get that warm feeling.

An ok apology. Also, the accident actually happened because someone tried to take extra care of the players (heating the room). This is actually really good as we've often heard that they tend to not care about the players. That this caring then ended up screwing over the two best players in the history of BW is just so unfortunate.

Good apology.

I wish they would have said more. Like... about the players personally.

"We know this is a very large part of their life, they trained for countless hours to get here, and we were extremely discourteous with perhaps half an hour of poor planning and lack of foresight."

I felt like they were really apologizing to keep their viewership high... because that is what they sell. The real apology should have gone to the players... because really nothing seems to be resolved, in the slightest, with these results.

That is what people are really after... and answer about the players about whos best... and allowing a good forumn for that to be determined. Not really to put on a "good show"... like some kind of circus where they are the freaks.

Still, I'm pissed because I feel like we as fans were robbed of what could've been a finals to be remembered... in the good sense of the word, not the opposite.

Good that they apologized.

For those saying Kespa did nothing to be blamed for, wasn't it their inability to quickly enforce their ruling which caused the 1 hour farce of a delay?

what can they do when theirs an entire pro team (KT) and an old dude (flashs father) protesting like crazy.

Well this was at least an honest apology, not like some shitty apology combat-ex style "well it was bad but actually its not my fault"

You don't see this kinda crap happening in any other sport over a controversial decision. The relevant team/player may be furious and up in arms but it's never more than 5 minutes or so because the judges make it absolutely clear that the decision is final, and there's no room for discussion (which is how it should be).

Seriously, this would not have happened in any other serious sport. Their inability to enforce their decision swiftly and effectively is what ruined the finals more than anything imo, because that whole shitstorm is obviously what had the most effect on Flash.

It's a good thing they realize how much damage this occurrence did, not only to MBC, but to the whole e-Sport and community. Though pointing fingers isn't really neccessary, but I guess its Korea after all.

It's pretty sad because I feel MBC really tried to have the very best conditions for the two players in order to make them feel like in a pratice room so they can both show 100% of their skill, unfortunately they did not ask the players before that if they actually WANT to play without a live audience

I was so pissed off the day this happened ... but it seems better now since they know what they did wrong. The commercials pissed me off so much ... it was like 45 minutes of game and 4 hours 15 minutes of commercials.

Good on them for acknowledging the mistake and apologising for it.

What happened can't be undone now which sucks, but it's good MBC is showing respect to the players and fans out there.

Now they just need to convince Flash's dad!

I hate it because they told the commentators to do it (I really pity the MBC commentators now)

They should have came out personally and made the apology themselves.

It's nice that they're apologizing, but actions speak louder than words. I don't think I'll be entirely convinced until the next MSL comes around.

Read Flash's interview, it'll open up worlds for the situation that he was in . Oh well, what's done is done. Like Jaedong and Flash have said, they are good/great/best/ friends, and buy each other dinner! (winner buys). So all the fanboys on EITHER side can er....well I don't know.

Super bowl. 10 seconds left in the last quarter, Saints up by 5 points. 3rd and goal at the 10 yard line. Peyton Manning throws a pass. Mid-flight, the lights go out. The lights come on 20 seconds later and everyone is confused. The refs decide that "it would have ended in a completion had the lights not went out", and that "the game was over". Colts win! Obviously it would be unfair to replay the down, because the Colts had already shown the Saints' defense what play they planned to use.

Can anyone honestly see this happening? I don't think so. Apology not accepted.

I wish they published something on the internet instead of just informally saying sorry.
I feel like I just sorta have to accept this apology -_-;;

Apologizing is the first step.

Now run a few finals that work as well as the OSL ones do and the process of forgiveness will happen automatically.

Yeah good thing we won`t have such problems during the next epic MSL Finals like:
Action vs Kwanro
go.go vs Fancy
or
Hogil vs Shine
...... oh wait where is that heater when you need it?

This whole thing is just an epic fail by the MBC guys and I feel kind of sorry for them I mean they got a smaller hall because their finals normally(SUCK!) are less visited than the OSL ones then suddenly they have a clash between JD and Flash which could fill a hall double as big as their old one and then BANG their ultra weird new studio screws up the show and now they harvest hate from everywhere ......poor little MBC guys I think that apology was nice and I totally accept it BUT there`s still this voice in my head screaming "DAMN THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SOOOOOOO EPIC"... and I think it will take some time till that vanish ^^

Except this analogy doesn't work in any way.

Anyone who thinks that Flash was in such a great position that he's analogous to Manning throwing a pass from the 10 yardline to take the lead didn't watch the game.

Why should they mention foreign fans?

It affected the fans who paid tickets to see this event the most. Seriously, they can't cover every single point, and every little damage the power outage caused.

it's cool and all that they sent out a formal apology to the public. but it's really not that big of a deal -_- they maybe one of the biggest broadcasting companies in korea but that doesnt mean that they are perfect 24/7 365 days a year. c'mon guys, "i forgive them," is a dumb comment to even say.. they're not apologizing to look for forgiveness, really only to save face just a little. they didnt even have to apologize, they have a shared monopoly with 2 other companies in korea; meaning regardless of sending out an apology, they're always going to have viewers. as for the foreign community, although they maybe aware of our position as viewers, they couldnt care less if we "forgive" them or not since we watch their services almost for free. their ratings and income come from korean viewers, not us. so here's a humbling post from me, cuz sometimes as people, we forget our place and think we are to be served to the upmost highest standard when really, we're just bumming around watching these games because we dont have anything else to do. i know i stepped on some toes, but there's the sad truth.

But I agree with many posters here that this is over now and we should move on. This wasn't the end of Flash vs Jaedong and I'm waiting for their next epic games.
