To sum it up shortly, CJ bought a controlling share of stock in OnMedia for around $400 million dollars. Now, to explain why this all may or may not matter.
CJ we all know, is the corporate sponsor of the CJ Entus team. They are a huge conglomerate that has their hands in a ridiculous amount of things from food products to movie theaters, and one of their other side businesses is cable television.
OnMedia owns a bunch of cable channels in Korea, the relevant one here being OnGameNet. The bigger society angle of this is that CJ now has a near monopoly on cable television channels in Korea, so make what you will of that.
In any case, CJ now owns two pro-game teams through as a side effect. Does this mean anything will happen? I have no idea. It's definite fun to think about a Sparkyz + Entus merger, but they are two tiny entities in a gigantic company. Personally, I'd bet on the status quo.
The other factor here is that CJ has some sort of control over GomTV, which may ease the relationship between OGN and GomTV as competitors. Gom has been quiet as of late, but we'll see if anything changes in the future.
|
Hope this is good news for GOM! CJ sent three players to Blizzcon and seems to be more aware of GOM's impact on foreigners so this might be good. One can always hope....

Omfg think of the after merger CJ/Sparkz lineup:
SAVIOR LETA MOVIE EFFORT IRIS SKYHIGH YELLOWARNC ETC ETC
OMFG MY BRAIN IS SPLODING

This sounds very interesting indeed.
The GomTV thing made me immediately think of the Gyungnam STX cup, with the longer offseason we could very well be seeing a CJ tournament broadcast on either GomTV (which would immediately get them tons of "official" viewers both in Korea and overseas) or OGN (back to the streams...), possibly featuring B-team players and such.
As to the CJ enterprise owning both Entus and Sparkys I wouldn't worry about it, Hite sponsoring sparkys doesn't mean that they own them but the teams looks to me like it still will belong to Hite rather than CJ.

Keep your goddamn Sparkyz the hell away from my Entus!

isn't sparky's owned by hite rather than ongamenet now though?
Or was it like some kind of joint sponsorship?

Hite has zero ownership over the team, they are purely a sponsor (OGN sold the name for money)
|
Well I am more worried about conflict of interests... since CJ owns OGN, and OGN airs SPL... then if CJ Entus loses badly it's bad image on the company... but CJ controls the TV... censorship much?

knowing korea without a doubt it will just be status quo.

arent sparkyz under hite now?

this. i really hate the misinterpretation everyone has that hite owns Sparkyz now. everything is still ran by OnGameNet.

I dunno, the way things are going now, CJ doesn't seem to need any help with effort and movie surging, but having practice partners like yarnc and leta would probably make them even better.

And yes. They were the poorest team out of all the teams
if Suma Go had money to support all their players long ago
KT/SKT mandrid would not exist

i don't know how i would feel if they merged teams. Wouldn't that upset how proleague would work with a super imba team? And i don't think anything will happen. I bet cj sponsors 100000000000 things so they won't bother with the starcraft team.

merging will never happen shady 'trades' will possibly arise though.

good one! this is a deceptively bland story, it needs rumor mill to keep it interesting.

Isn't this old news? Maybe this was in the works for a long time and didn't become official until just now. I swear there was a topic exactly like this 6 months ago or so.

i dont think anything will change anytime soon. the deciding guys of cj are many hierarchy levels above any guy in that company who even knows about the sponsorship of some sc progaming team. and i doubt the cj-entus manager would go to the big boss of the huge cj conglomerate and tell him he wants that horang2 kid from sparkyz.

was a rumor around april, but it was just a rumor. so I guess the story would be that CJ has been interested for a while, but it took this long to finalize a deal.

Is it me or does it seem like there are just a few corporations in Korea that owns EVERYTHING. They remind me of those evil giant conglomerates in movies that control the entire country.
Anyway, just a random thought.

Leta is probably the only player CJ would want.

Just read it. And yeah, everyone, especially CJ fans should read it. Seeing coach Cho at proleague events, he seems to be the stoic businessman type of guy. Never thought he cares so much for his players.

Yeah I cant see CJ needing yarnc or go.go or something

As a 19-year old, I always found coach Cho to be the best coach around: if you followed how Movie and SkyHigh have been handled throughout all of 2009 you'd have realized how whenever they were winning "too much" (especially in SkyHigh's case) the coach would bench them to prevent the success from overwhelming them. Like the stereotypical asian father who is extremely hard on kids but is extremely proud of their kids' success.
Instead of sending rookies out on ace matches like OZ's coach Park he would do the exact opposite, often sacrificing PL wins for the team to keep his players' mindset balanced. Also in every former GO player interview, especially in Oversky and Iris' most recent interviews they tell how hard the atmosphere inside the team house was back then, and how (Iris said) with the new blood it just feels lighter.

I also have the highest respect for Coach Cho. The guy is a genius, he knows how to breed great players. Not to mention probably one of the manliest coaches around

Though it is - I hope - good news for everyone regardless of a possible merger. Getting GOM back involved would be a+!

ok i don't get it.if CJ bought a controlling percent of shares of on-media,does that mean that they now have the power to merge the two progaming teams together?

not directly imho, but as the majority owner, they can enforce a new management of the on-media company, one that is loyal to CJ and obeys any orders given by the CJ bosses. but as long as they dont control all the shares, they dont technically own on-media.

The 4-0 in dream league B-team CJ?

Hmm. I somehow remember hearing this news a little while back. What's wrong with me?
EDIT: I know, I don't read threads...

hm if this means another Gom TV SL then that would be awesome!
Hopefully the Sparkyz stay away from Entus!
they have nothing to offer except washed up newbies!

sparkyz were always sponsored by ogn (from 2006 anyways).they just sold their teams naming rights to hite.

As long as this hold true, hite won't let sparkyz and cj merge.
