This article really made me respect all the coaches. You can easily tell that he really loves his players, and that he did everything he could for his team.
I hope you all enjoy!

(Sorry, this was long so I didn't have time to check spelling and grammar )

"A coach is a job that is judged by how his player grows and evolves."

With a record of 10-2, score of 19 points, and only one loss during Proleague R1, the team that leads Proleague 09-10 is KT Rolster.

Last season, after a losing the quarrel with Samsung KHAN for a spot in the playoffs, KT has focused intensively on rebuilding the team and skills of its players. As a result, they were able to go up to rank 1 this season and show the fruits of their labor.

In the heart of KTโ€™s growth are the coaches Lee Ji Hoon ((T)jihoon) and Kang Do Kyung ((Z)H.O.T-Forever), who both had crucial parts of their own. Since Kang became the head coach in the beginning of the 08-09 Season, he has shown an amazing display of his coaching skills by raising KT to First place in such a short time of 1 year. He maintains a great relationship with coach Lee as well as an unbreakable bond with his players and was able to become one of the most important people on KT at this time.

Here's an interview of (Z)H.O.T-Forever.

- KT has a really great spirit right now
โ–ฒ I didnโ€™t believe it until we had 6-7 wins. Until then, I felt the gaze of many people on me, and after our 9th win, I became nonchalant about the situation. But right now, the pressure is back on again. I thought that after 7 wins in R1 we would not be called an overrated team, but I realize that we have to do better in R2. Itโ€™s not a bad thing, but I have begun to fear of losing (laughs).

- You have been with the team for about a year now. How well have you gotten used to being a coach?
โ–ฒ I bond really well with my players. Now, I have become so close to them that I even know a lot of their personal issues. There are no obstacles between us, and the way players look to us coaches has been changed. Moreover, the way that fans and even our company look at us has changed. At first, they didnโ€™t pay close attention to the coaches, but now, after weโ€™ve done so well in R1, the fans got to know how important coaches are for the team. With the addition of (T)Hery and (Z)ZergBong to our coaching staff, the number of coaches in KT has grown, and that clearly has improved the team.

Of course, we canโ€™t give all the credit to coaches. It is obviously because the players worked diligently and because our manager has led the team well that the team is doing exceptionally right now. Everyoneโ€™s doing their job.

This is the first time KT has not traded players at the beginning of a season. We always added members, but this time, we added coaches. However, this is our best season yet (laughs). The headquarters really help us a lot. They do whatever we want to do. They are like a producer of a movie. If the producer takes care of everything without consulting, a movie cannot be produced, just as if the headquarters does everything by themselves; that surely canโ€™t be beneficial to the overall quality of the team. They support us to the fullest, but never go about managing the players. If we do well, they compliment us, and if we do poorly, they give us good advices, so they are really supportive of KT.

- Did you have any burdens upon joining the coaching staff?
โ–ฒ I didnโ€™t have any burdens. I emptied my mind and decided that I am trying something new. Rather than burden, I felt more excited and because KT did not do well Last season, I treated this as a mission to make the team better. There wasnโ€™t a player other than (T)Flash who showed prominence Last season, and we didnโ€™t make it to the playoffs, so there was a lot we could do. A coach of a rank 1 teamโ€™s job is to simply help, but I was happy that there was a lot to accomplish for me as a coach (laughs). It was the first season for our manager as well, so we were both very eager for it. Although we didnโ€™t advance to the playoffs last season, we were able to train our players well. I think the team relied on Flash too much due to his exceptional skill compared to other team members. Of course, he is still better than a lot of them, but a lot of them have gotten better so Flash is happy that he has less to worried about (laughs).

- What was the biggest thing you focused on when you were appointed a position as a coach?
โ–ฒ Before I became a coach, I didnโ€™t really think too much about it and instead thought that it would be exciting. However, I judged a book by its cover. From the outside, KT seemed only like a regular team, but inside, there were problems and it was the relationship between the coach and the players. The players didnโ€™t care too much about coaches and instead thought that they were not helpful at all. In the beginning, it was hard for me to act as a coach in an atmosphere like that, but after working on it continuously, the players started using us resourcefully from some time (laughs). They used us in a good way.

- What did you set as the core goal of the enhancement of the team?
โ–ฒ The coaching staff had a meeting together with our opinions. We decided that instead of worrying about trading and getting outside resources, we should work at the inside of the team. We decided that itโ€™s more important to fill in the holes and furnish the inside. If we focus on the inside and then work our way out, there was no way the team rebuilding couldnโ€™t work. Therefore, more coaches were hired. I tried hard and our managers worked really hard as well. After talking with the headquarters about this idea, they decided to follow our words and trust in the players we have now. And right now, everyone is satisfied.

- Do you have any personal advices for coaching a player?
โ–ฒ It really important to find out a playerโ€™s specialties. Itโ€™s one of the basics. Although itโ€™s important to tell what they do wrong, itโ€™s more important that they understand what they are doing wrong first before we give them any feedbacks. After that, a coach has to constantly check on what the player makes use of your advices. If they didnโ€™t get anything from your advices, there is no answer.

Honestly, (T)Flash, (P)Bisu, (Z)Jaedong, and all top players all have something in common, that when they look over other players, they absorb all the good plays that they make, and if they hear something that could be of good use, they absorb them as well. I always tell the players that if they feel that they have reached their limits, they should look around the people next to them. Players often share each otherโ€™s advices, but they can only share. In contrast, a coach can give everything for every player. Although a player gets judged by his skills, a coach is judged by how well the player does, so the coach has to be on the playerโ€™s side. A player utilizing his coaches well is like having the most supportive ally in their lives.

-Does it help that you were a Hanbit (now Woongjin) coach before your enrollment in the army?
โ–ฒ I only coached for 2-3 months at Hanbit. However, when I was the captain, I played the role of a coach as well. When I was in Hanbit, I helped the rookie players even at a young age. I couldnโ€™t tell them all the important information because I was a player back then as well, but the coaching part was the same. Itโ€™s the same for (P)Reach, (P)Kingdom, (T)Sync, (P)GARIMTO, (Z)Junwi, and recently, (Z)GGPlay and (P)free as well. I led the players back then, and I use the experience from back then to coach my players at KT. There are so many things I could name (laughs).

- I heard that (P)Violetโ€™s growth has a lot to do with your coaching.
โ–ฒ I canโ€™t take all the credit for Violetโ€™s improvement. However, the most certain thing is that Violet tried his hardest, and that is how he is doing well right now. I was only a support. Often, when a coach makes improvements on the player, the coach is noticed more than the player, but I never want it to be that way. Iโ€™m satisfied with the fact that Violet has vastly improved and that heโ€™s doing well.

While coaching Violet, instead of focusing on detailed plays, I focused more on attack timings and the mindset during a game. Violetโ€™s management and control were both perfect, but, because of his cautious personality, he made too many cautious plays. We tried our hardest to fix all the aspects that he developed from losing a lot. Iโ€™ve seen Reach ever since he was young, and heโ€™s a lot like Violet. Reach really listened to me well, and because Violet was taught by Reach, he follows me well also. It felt like I can talk my own language and he would understand me. Working hard in every aspect, having good manners, and etc. all matched together. From there, I sensed a scent of Reach in Violet and believed and trusted that he could do it without becoming arrogant when he got better. Iโ€™ve seen many times where arrogance turned into vanity, but I donโ€™t think Violet would be like that.

- I heard you gave in your all for the sakes of Violetโ€™s growth
โ–ฒ After R1 and R2 of last season, because of the rule that said all three races must be sent out, we needed a Protoss, but couldnโ€™t find someone strong. Right before R4, our manager came up to me and said he wanted to raise Violet. He told me to train him, so I told him that Iโ€™m a Zerg user so it may be a big burden to work with Violet, but he told me to focus only on Violet and heโ€™ll take care of everything else that I had to do. We never revealed this in the past, but we did try to get Protoss players, but it failed due to a lot of difficulties with other teams and the headquarters.

Our next plan was to train Violet. I acted as his brain and taught him Spartan style. I believed that if he starts winning again, heโ€™ll try harder every step forward, so I decided to persuade him to believe in me.

- All the KT coaches are former players.
โ–ฒ There are a lot of benefits when your manager is a former player as well. He can read the players really well. Every player has his own pride, and if we hurt their pride, the team becomes disharmonious. In addition, our manager trusts his players a lot. On the contrary, it is just as important that the players trust their coaches, or there is really no hope. When players and coaches trust in each other, the team can move forward and move up in ranks. Our manager puts a great emphasis in that.

Current KT coaches all were once players so we each have our own pride, and our manager does well by not hurting our pride as well. He believes our pride and abilities as coaches. Therefore, I also let players have their own pride and give them my positive qualities at the same time.

I only help the player not fall down from where he already is. The one who is actually playing in front of the monitor is Violet himself. The one who receives applause is Violet as well. I get happy when my players thank me, but even without their thank you, if they just need me, Iโ€™m more than satisfied. Until recently, I focused solely on Violetโ€™s growth, but now, Iโ€™m helping players of other races as well, and I am willing to help them whenever they seek for my help.

-What change did KT go through the most this season?
โ–ฒ Honestly, we did well from R5 of last season. We ended R5 with rank 2, and this team was already different. Because Violet started doing exceptionally, Flash didnโ€™t have to work hard all by himself. Flash was able to get a load off his chest and our players started to believe in themselves that KT could become a strong team. Ever since, our members treat othersโ€™ happiness as if itโ€™s their own and help each other all the time. They are keeping a good-willed rivalry with another and are doing the best they can for themselves. In the beginning of this season, when (P)Stats and (P)Tempest were sent out, Violet helped them a lot as if their games were his game, and this goes to all the players. The Zerg players also help each other thoroughly.

Our biggest advantage is that we help all the players on the roster practice and give them advices in order that they win. Coaches analyze the opponentโ€™s VODs and extract their style and strategies and we incorporate those in our practices. I think this is the teamโ€™s greatest merit of all, the trust and harmony among all players. I know it sounds made up, but itโ€™s true (laughs).

- After KT strengthened the coaching staff, what were some the outcomes?
โ–ฒFlash, despite his place in the progaming scene right now, is very respectful and practices a lot. However, his pride for this game and his stubbornness made it hard for us to coach him. The players heard that I was a scary coach, so a lot of them had hard times with me, and Flash was one of them. At first it was like that, but now, we enjoy our lives at the KT residence and our player-coach relationship has become like no other (laughs).

We tried very hard to get a Terran coach because it was matter of getting a coach for the best Terran player in the world. Sync was well-suited to be Flashโ€™s coach, but he has to go to the army soon, so he told us that it would be hard. If he gave any other reason, I would have persuaded him, but I couldnโ€™t do anything because itโ€™s was an enrollment (laughs). So we looked for another person. We wanted to make sure that the coach was a former player. We tried contacting other teams, but there was no luck.

While there was a lot of concern for a Terran coach, Hery from visited my house. After his retirement from STX, he was he was living off part-time jobs. Before then, we had not thought of Hery at all, but after talking with my manager, he seemed like he really wanted to use Hery as the Terran coach. Hery honestly wanted to come back to eSports, but he didnโ€™t have confidence as a player, so he couldnโ€™t say anything. Hery and Flash are not only really close, but also go well together as player-coach, so he is like the best Terran coach at this moment. Zergbong had already been working as a coach, so he didnโ€™t have any problems. While I was training Violet with all I could, Zergbong played with the players and got to be in good relationship with them.

- Do you have any other rookie player with whom you are working since Violet?
โ–ฒ When I first became a coach, there were 23 players. Just because there are a lot of players doesnโ€™t mean a team does well, so we kicked out all the players who had no motivation to play and traded players who didnโ€™t match with us. After all the process of cleaning up our roster, there are only 13 people in the team right now.

Currently, instead of focusing on rookies, we are focusing on helping our main members get even stronger. We suspect that (P)Stats will be our next big player. Because we are focusing so much on Proleague, I feel sorry for 2-tier players for not being able to pay close attention to them. However, we are still running online tests on a regular basis. We try to test 50 players in 1 month, so we are working hard with the rookies as well.

- KT Zergs seem like the toughest
โ–ฒ Terran and Protosses have 2-tier players, whereas all Zerg players are 1-tier. We have the most Zergs in our entries. Maybe itโ€™s because Zergbong and I are both former Zerg players (laughs). Our Zerg players have a different color. (Z)Luxury is an aggressive player and (Z)815 seems plain yet is very strong. (Z)FireFist can be smooth and sharp at the same time, and (Z)HoeJJa can play solid games with ease. If the 3-race didnโ€™t exist, we could potentially send out 4 Zerg players out. Unlike the Zergs, 4 Terrans and 4 Protosses arenโ€™t ready yet (laughs).

- What are the goals for R2?
โ–ฒ Our manager said in an interview that we didnโ€™t set a certain number of wins as our goal. We will instead try our hardest on the matches that we are given to play. Last season, we were happy with 3 consecutive wins, but not this season. Instead of focusing on winning streaks, weโ€™ll focus only on the matches ahead of us. Every week, every game, weโ€™ll try our best by not slacking off.

-Is it hard to live with the players?
โ–ฒ I lack some personal times. Coaching job requires me to spend time with the players from practices, to arranging entries after every match, analyzing our players. Itโ€™s a job that is very time consuming. Of course, players have a harder job, but coaches lack more time. But we gain strength when players do well.

-If you are given a break, what would you do?
โ–ฒ I want to go on a vacation. I can use the time to discover who I am and I want to learn more about whatโ€™s going on around the world. Although itโ€™s not recent, I have traveled to different countries before, and I really liked exploring the world. The things I learn around the world can even be applied in the games. Gaming is a part of life. Experiences from looking at the new world outside can be used to coach players and it will have a more broad effect.

- Anything you look forward to in the future?
โ–ฒ I donโ€™t have a certain rank as a goal. I will just try hard on the upcoming games. I really hope our players turn out well and do well in those games. I hope all the players in the roster can win, so that we donโ€™t have one key player to rely on. I also hope that current respect and trust between players, coaches, and the headquarters remain intact.

-Anything special you want to try in the future?
โ–ฒ I will just focus on the present. As much as I like trying new things, whatever I do, I want to do anything in eSports that fans want. I will stay with eSports forever.

-Anything else you want to say for the fans?
โ–ฒ I participated in the IeSF tournament recently. Itโ€™s been a long time since my last televised match. As a player on that day, I felt that gaming is really fun. If any more of these opportunities arrives again, although itโ€™s important that I try hard to win, I will try to play games that are enjoyable for the fans. I was really glad that fans enjoyed it last time.
If Starcraft 2 comes out, I could come back as a player (laughs), but despite the fact that Iโ€™m a coach, Iโ€™m grateful for the fans who still support me. Now, as a full-time coach at KT, I ask that you cheer us on.

I really enjoyed that interview, thank you! One thing though.
despite the fact that Iโ€™m a cough, Iโ€™m grateful for the fans who still support me

Sorry to nitpick.

I actually started to write "couch" by the end of the interview instead of "coach" so I tried hard not to make that typo, but I guess I made another typo instead haha.

Fixed! Thank you

This. Is. Amazing.

THANK YOU. Didnt realize until like 20 minutes in how long it must have taken to translate this. Good insight into how the Fingerboom house works.

Also is good to see H.O.T-Forever.

Edit:

That part made me laugh.

One of the best interviews I've read. The insight into coaching given by HOT was really interesting. I hope he'll stay in e-Sports as long as he can, because I've rarely seen anyone this passionate about the game, the players, and the scene in general. I loved the part about Violet, and how he drew similarities to Reachs development. Also it was interesting to learn about Flashs initial stubborness
Hery is probably a really good listener, being able to hold a dialogue rather than just giving him instructions, and pointers like a coach would normally do.

It basically means that they trained him very very rigorously.

They probably made him do the same things over thousands of times .

Thanks for your translation! This is fantastic work! HOT is amazing.

However, when I was the captain, I played the role of a coach as well.

So, is that what a Captain does? As a coach?

If so, I am really worried about WeMadeFox right now.

Hmm, I think they need to focus on Stats more. That guy has some serious PvZ potential. And if you can PvZ, you can pretty much do it all. I think he is the true future of KT's toss power.

Amazing interview, thanks for the translation!

It's hard to imagine KT not continuing to do well considering their current lineup this season.

Flash is hotter than ever and is probably the best Ace player a team could ask for right now, Violet is an amazing success all of a sudden (and can also be clutch in Ace if the map is too P favored to send Flash out), Luxury is strong (although I think the coaches should focus on him a bit more...he looked really bad against CJ), and 815/Firefist are capable of taking down A-teamers, too.

When we get to the Bo7 format, it's hard to imagine KT losing to any other team if their lineup was something like this:

(T)Flash, (Z)Luxury, (P)Violet, (P)Stats, (Z)815, (Z)FireFist, (T)fOrGG

Crazy depth.

I've always wondered how much help players like Flash and Jaedong actually get from their coaches. With the possible exceptions of (T)BoxeR, (T)iloveoov, and (T)NaDa, it doesn't seem like any Terran would have the gravitas to be a respected coach for Flash. Well, at the very least they can get moral support.
Favorite progamers (in order): Flash, Stork, Violet, Sea. ||| Get better soon, Violet!

I think that ForGG lost the motivation to play. One of the key reasons why he was that good was because he wanted to show Jaedong, his teammate at the time, that he is better. The Oz coach was pretty Jaedong biased. I think that I read that from an interview.

Now ForGG accomplished what he strived for. He has lost the motivation to win.

AMAZING INTERVIEW.

This must be the best interview I have read on TL. It tells us so much what's going on inside the teams. I have to say I was surprised by many things. I was always wondering what was the role of coaches and now it seems pretty clear.

Also, this interview makes me like Violet even more. Go Violet!

No one explicitly mentions that the coach is biased. But I guess the actions from the players can be construed to show that. Not to mention all the Korean peeps (konadora, Hoon+others) say so.

Coaching is obviously not about being better than the players. None of the coaches are EVER better.

I'm so glad that Flash's team is supporting him properly, normally it's just Flash against the world and they didn't make the playoffs last season which was a complete travesty -_-
