Well basicly it is right that after like 20 or so your reaction time and speed in general starts to get worse. That's why White-Ra being somewhat around thirty only has around 200 APM usually.
ZvZ for example is a matchup where any tactics or strategies are rarely seen, so the entire game is reduced to actually speed, reaction and overall unit control. So being younger and faster gives you a big advantage.

Anyway: Go ret!

you dont actually get slower as you get older when you're in your 20s. ra's a coincidence, and theres not that many fast foreign protosses, or fast foreigners in general, anyway.

the korean's attitude towards age is more based on the manditory military service + the fact that older players dont really want to focus solely on gaming as much as younger kids will. if someone is in their mid 20s but doesnt have other obligations and is willing to practice all day theres nothing wrong with it.

Yeah I never understood why people say that. People think your physical peak is when you're 20? There are thousands of athletes who would disagree with that.

agree... i also think the older koreans grew up with sc as a game where apm asnt that important... and it keeps getting more important (and the apm usage gets more efficient) with every new generation of pros... and when you are used to playing one way its just damn hard to change it... so i think it has something to do with age, but not limited response times or reflexes or anything liek that... just that its too hard to still change the way you play after you've done that for years (which is also because of the reasons idra mentioned)...

Ret is young both physically and metally. I do not think he age is affecting his abilities. What say you, grandpa toss?

Well basicly it is right that after like 20 or so your reaction time and speed in general starts to get worse. That's why White-Ra being somewhat around thirty only has around 200 APM usually.
ZvZ for example is a matchup where any tactics or strategies are rarely seen, so the entire game is reduced to actually speed, reaction and overall unit control. So being younger and faster gives you a big advantage.

Anyway: Go ret!

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Looking at other physical activities (piano) and mental activities (chess). It is evident that a human being could be in peak BW condition well past age 20. Since Koreans start young and their training method is highly susceptible to burning out, there is a trend of BW players doing worse in their early to mid 20's.

Well, you certainly aren't improving that statistic. Why d'fuck aren't you in the e-stro house practicing PvZ with ret? :D

IdrA mentioned the loneliness / isolation once in an interview on fnatic that was around about two months ago - he more-or-less said that he felt it but that he also enjoyed the reality of him being different or unique in these ways (Correct me if I'm wrong IdrA)

Actually there is scientific data showing your reaction speed drops once you pass the age of 18.

Also your fingers start slowing down as well

There are quite a few people (like martial artists) over 40 with much faster reaction speed than necessary for starcraft.
Caution! Future approaching rapidly at a rate of about 60 seconds per minute.

All this talk about being alone, MAN UP MATE =p

When I look at ret FPVOD's it so reminds me of sAviOr in terms of how efficient they are with what appears to be an average APM and how they always have a good unit combo. But sAviOr is able to carry this out during the entire duration of the game and get more out of his units whereas it appears tha ret's late game is not that advanced. Keep practising ret and you'll get there ! Great video though. GIMME MORE !

thats not what i meant, i meant the uniqueness of being the only foreign pro + the other positives of progaming outweighed the negatives. the isolation definitely isnt a good thing, though it affects everyone differently.

Very cool video. GL over there.

Loved the part where the entire estro team is practicing in the same room and all you can hear is the noise of shitty keyboards and mouses.

i can't remember what the cj gaming area looks like (or if we've seen it - i'm sure we have), but the estro basement always struck me as rather depressing.

it must help to have artosis around though.

why, is it illegal in Korea?

I'm kind of curious about Ret going to S.Korea so late, considering SC2 is out soon. Then again it's pretty cool and I hope he does good but his mechanics are gonna get a total makeover I'm sure.

Mayb. he didnt get the opportunity until now? Anyways - I would go to Korea at any time, in any stage of life. Its just so...Cool. And give it a fair run, so you dont look back and regret it later in life.
Anyways - great video, please send cookies!

Actually there is scientific data showing your reaction speed drops once you pass the age of 18.

Also your fingers start slowing down as well

OMG SCIENTIFIC DATA? that's the best kind of data!!!

-_- link to the study? oh wait, there isnt one. even if there was, it'd just be a theory. there are too many variables

There has been at least one study. I watched it on youtube. It wasn't saying that reaction speeds decrease with age. The documentary concluded that peoples brains lose the ability to learn and do tasks basically without even thinking about doing them. Sorta like how an older person finds it more difficult to pick up a language than a toddler. Something in their brain just doesn't function as it used to.

If it was on youtube, best case it was a documentary... which means that it has an agenda, however subtle.

If people want to show proof, lets see some legitimate research. Not to say that nothing is true on youtube, just that you shouldn't site it as a source.

Hey look, this guy gets the idea! When you cite your source as being "I saw it on youtube", you lose credibility. Best way to state this is: "The study was conducted by ___ or can be found ____ it was published on youtube if you want to see". The idea is, youtube should not be your primary source. Though I'm sure you've learned lots on youtube BanZu, right.......?

Yeah honestly documentaries are basically entertainment, it all depends on what the maker of it wants to convey. It may have SOME actual data, but it'll be skewed, picked and chosen or just made up. Find actual reports not videos.

Regardless.

Good luck ret mane we're all rooting for you. Prove these suckas wrong

As far as reaction times/age go, a simple google would have told you that reaction time "shortens from infancy into the late 20s, then increases slowly until the 50s and 60s, and then lengthens faster as the person gets into his 70s and beyond". Link w/ proper journal references

As far as the other point, of older people not picking up language etc as quickly as younger people. Firstly language is an incredibly special case, but i assume what the video was talking about was neuroplasticity.

While it's true that the brain becomes less plastic with age, to suggest that this would have any noticeable affect on a gamer from when they're 19 to when they're 29 is shaky shaky ground.

It's social factors, not physical/mental that keep the progamer pool so young

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8014399?dopt=Abstract

jeez, instead of youtube bashing atleast try to search up stuff in scirus/intute/or medical databases like pubmed.

Here is the abstract for the lazy:
"This study analyzed auditory reaction time (RT) data from 1,265 community-dwelling volunteers (833 males and 432 females) who ranged in age from 17 to 96. Cross-sectional analyses revealed slowing of simple (SRT) and relatively greater slowing of disjunctive (DRT; aka "go-no-go") reaction time across decades for both males and females. Repeated testing within participants (longitudinal analyses) over eight years showed consistent slowing and increased variability with age. Males were faster than females cross age groups, RT tasks, and visits. Beginning at about age 20, RTs increased at a rate of approximately 0.5 msec/yr for SRT and 1.6 msec/yr for DRT. Errors also increased, making unlikely a tradeoff of accuracy for faster responses. The findings are consistent with the hypotheses that slowing of behavior is: (a) a continuous process over the adult life span; (b) characterized by age-associated increases in within-participant variability; (c) a direct function of task complexity and, presumably, the degree of mediation by higher regions in the central nervous system; and (d) greater in women than men."

Most significant part is that in the 20s reaction time increases but accuracy decreases, however there is a general trend of slowing down RT over time.

Also Ret Fighting!! Keep posting these vids artosis like you did for Nony, I really want to see courage too, the game camera quality is much higher here too ^__^, GJ scforall

Yeah but then the foreign team would just get raped over and over again. It's much better to be practicing with the koreans all day than with other foreigners.

Oh goodness me, FOX tv where do you get your sight? Can't you keep track, the puck is black. That's why the ice is white.

Didn't realize that was relevant here. Ret is 23. Whoever found it initially must have been listening with one ear.

Yeah ret looks all slow while Artosis is hammering his keyboard all crazy, ret is such a beast.

We should put together a donation pool to get Ret some South Korean "professional escorts" to help him with his loneliness.

Or just send him some "RET FIGHTING" type cards showing our support.

There's now an SC2 dicussion up on scforall.com with ret and artosis.

http://scforall.com/news/news02.asp?mNum=n03&PageNo=1&where=&query=&sterm=&articleNum=669

I was hoping the first interview would be about how ret is doing in Korea etc, but it's better than nothing.
