So this is more of a ranting/rambling blog so keep that in mind as you notice all the grammar/spelling errors

Some of you guys might have seen my weekly podcast/web show Sc2 Up & Coming

About the Show!

SC2 Up & Coming is a weekly podcast, dedicated to the up and coming Starcraft II scene. Each week we will focus on the players, teams, and leagues. Our plan is to shed some light on some of the lesser known players and teams. We will also keep you up to date on qualifying events, LAN events, as well as major tournaments.

The show started up on July 9th, today is going to be the 6th episode of the show. We've had on multiple guest: xSixSuppy(now EGSuppy), NrGLuckyFool, CSN John Clark, Complexity Academy Sasquatch, Infinity Seven Pyre, Robot eSports Gemini, and Impressive Play SethN. As of this morning the show was like any other show, we would talk about the WCS events going on mainly Australia and the Oceanic events. Go over some qualifiers from last week/weekend(NASL Season 4, ESWC) Next we would go over up and coming events and local events(Local LANs, the next season of ESEA is starting and IEM) The original plan was to have on PiG or MoonGlade or both however they traveled to compete at IEM so they will come on later.

So I submitted the normal Calendar information to get the event approved. Only to find out my request was rejected. No problem I often forget to put in all the details about the episode, who the host are things like that.

If you haven't seen a calendar rejection they usually look like this:
Your event was rejected by our moderators. This is most likely due to your event not being notable enough to include on our calendar, or lacking streams / coverage information.

I figured no problem I'd just add more info about everything and submit again. But there was an additional note that I didn't take into account...

Additional note: Show type events require an established audience prior to having calendar submissions accepted

So I received a response a little bit later, I figured there shouldn't be an issue since I added more info about the event. This time I received another note, which really pissed me off.

Additional note: You have not gained enough popularity in the past 30 minutes to make this meet the requirements

So an up and coming caster like myself who is trying to do something to improve the Starcraft scene by hosting a podcast about lesser known leagues/players/teams gets screwed over trying to build something from the ground up because i'm not popular enough... I know i'm not JP or djWheat but that doesn't mean the show gets no viewers each week.... Right now the show is still getting a lot more viewers from word of mouth/the guest we've had on the show. Each week we constantly get new viewers and a big part of that is because we are featured on the Calendar.

I've created a poll on the main thread of Sc2 Up & Coming that I'm hoping people will vote/give their input if you think a show like this should be featured on the Calendar each week.

Link to the Poll!

So if you get a chance please head over there and vote

Stuff like this should definitely be encouraged and be featured.

But only if it is proven itself to be a recurring show in my opinion

It's a clash of priorities I'm afraid. Everyone is up and coming in one way or another (or like to brand themselves that way and players are branded that way as having "potential" to achieve, despite the reality that they might not).

Breaking the thin line of being amongst the popular is always difficult and it doesn't help that the hub and center of the scene is moderated to maintain the popular for both their own interests as well as the fact that it's just easier to draw that line. It just makes those at the top consistently more relevant despite potentially being past their time while those trying to break out eventually abandoning the idea and moving on.

It puts more strain on the new and more leniency on the established and comfortable and that's harsh and rough. It's not Team Liquid's obligation and it certainly becomes a gray zone of controversy or issue if they were to take on that responsibility (who's really up and coming, how do we make that distinction and how do we justify it in comparison to others who are similar, but trying to be different).

This goes for players, new teams and shows/community members. Sorry to hear about your situation and I agree that it's pretty shit but on the other side; it's just a tough boundary and barrier to consider crossing.

Sucks for both sides, but only one side loses. ):

Mouse over August 14th on the TL.net calendar.

Notice a lot of text pops up. This is with the "popularity filter" in place.

Now, pretend anyone who wants to schedule an event on the TL.net calendar can do so...

I love using the TL.net calendar to see what tournaments are when, to see what mainstream shows, etc. are when. You can't do that if you put what everyone in the SC2 scene who is going to stream/cast something is listed on the calendar - it just becomes a big repository of junk nobody can sift through. I'm not calling your show junk - but this is why you're required to have a following (something you haven't yet show that you have) before you're put on the calendar.

This isn't exclusionary or insulting and it isn't rocket science. It's pure, plain and simple logistics. If this was a forum that was only frequented by a few dozen people, it'd be different. It isn't.

I'm not saying anyone should be able to just throw an event up on the calendar. You look at tonight's events and the usual events are listed, Playhem, KOT, a couple show matches, and other various tournaments like WCS.

I'm just annoyed that for the past 5 episodes we've had no issues putting it up, we average around 50 views peaking around 100 depending on the guest. But every single week we've gotten new and more viewers. I can understand the show isn't as big as anything hosted by some people(JP/djWheat) but we are getting close to ChanmanV's shows.

The way I see it is they are making it extreamly difficult in order to continue to get this "following" that they want to see to get featured.

It could just be the fact that there are already so many events listed for today, hopefully your next submission will be on a less clustered day and you might not have any issues.

Please note I have nothing to do with Calendar events and featured stuff etc.

But it seems your just jumping the gun a bit. You're growing in popularity and and by word of mouth. Good. Your averaging 50-100 viewers. Fine. Keep on, keeping on. Pay your dues and all that.

Lots of people have the most awesome idea ever. But the daily/weekly/monthly grind of actually creating a worthwhile product. I haven't watched your show, so I'm not commentating on specific quality of your product.

But what I'm saying is you put in the blood sweat and tears and make it popular. The pay-off and recognition of that is it get's featured. Not the other way around. Generally you don't get featured in the hopes you'll get popular. That's backwards thinking, imo. You're featured because your popular.

Does that make sense?

Just keep doing what your doing, push for excellence. And if people think your doing a good thing, it'll hopefully get noticed.

I think the biggest thing to realize here is that the featured section isn't there to benefit the organization running the program, it is there to benefit the viewers. The featured section serves to provide a short list of important events that they are most likely going to watch. Flooding it with programs of mediocre success would ruin the whole point of having a featured list. If there aren't high standards for being accepted for the featured list there is no point in having one at all.

Everyone was bringing up a lot of really good points I just wanted to address this real quick.

The point I was trying to make is that this show benefits the viewers. There has been people talking all of the forum as well as in chat of more notable shows, State of the game/ Starcast/ Inside the Game that there should be more coverage of the lesser known scene.

Our show does that, we go into depth about those mid tier teams and players. We care about the leagues such as the ESEA or the SixPool Gaming Z33kTV Team League. We provide something that people are interested in, that the other show don't care about or talk about, and that is very much so needed in the scene right now!

The reason I was so upset is that for 5 weeks we've had no issues getting the show featured, not once was it mentioned that the show doesn't have enough of a following or that the views aren't worth all the time put in to make this show possible. Even the poll that I've posted up has 32 saying they wanted to see this featured on the calendar each week. Now that might be a small number but it still shows that people are interested in this content.

This show is something completely new, nothing else like it is out there. It isn't as successful right from the get go but it is growing and I think it is silly not to let that growth continue.

I would also encourage everyone who's read this blog/commented to actually check out the show one of these weeks you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I completely agree that it seems weird to have no problem being featured for 5 weeks and now you are being denied. I cannot comment on the decisions of the staff behind the featured section. Maybe there has been a minor change in requirements and you were on the cusp of them earlier and didn't make the cut after the change. Maybe the staff decided to cut down on the featured streams in general and yours is one of the ones that was chosen to be removed (doubtful, but possible).

I'm not sure what the reason is, but as long as you are providing content people want to see and promoting your show through means other than the featured section (Thread in SC2 general, Twitter, Facebook, RSS, etc) then I have no doubt that you will continue to see success, and if you stay with it hopefully end up being a staple on the featured section =]

I was just trying to provide an unbiased assessment of what the featured section is to the average user on TL. Either way, I wish you the best of luck with your program =]
